This tool is designed to assist in applying finishes to objects that need to be set on these tri-pods to help you get 100% coverage. The manufacturer makes no age claim and leaves the user's discretion what is appropriate.

How close together can the points of two tripods be at the closest possible spacing? For supporting narrow objects.
Asked by: John
Connecting two tripods together using the integrated pin and hole mechanism will provide the closest spacing of the points, which is 1.5” apart.

The fundamental problem with them is that they are too sharp at the point where the piece being finished rests on them. They have put tiny indentations in every piece of wood I have rested on them to dry. When I use them as intended to finish one side, flip it over and rest the finished side on the pyramids while finishing the other side, they scratch the wood (not the finish on the wood, but the actual wood) with each tiny movement of the wood. They are wholly unsuitable where a professional quality finish is desired.

I recently purchased a set of painters pyramids from a different store and really liked them.  Unfortunately, my wife gave me a project that required more than ten pyramids so I got these to ensure I could complete the task.  This product is very useful.  I've used them to support painting and staining projects with successful results on both.  While not required for most applications, the ability to screw them into a board allows them to be configured securely to support sensitive projects.  The top edge of the pyramid is small enough that even with wet paint it doesn't really leave a noticeable mark, making them ideal.  They are relatively sturdy and support a decent amount of weight.  They also store securely by nesting them together and clean up very easily.  I've removed paint and stain from them without issue--although this is an added step I'm sure is completely unnecessary. My only criticism is that the way the legs are created is a bit flimsy and I'm not a big fan of the curvature from leg to tip.  There are other versions home depot used to sell with a solid base which I preferred over this one. That said; however, they are fairly priced and quite handy to have so I don't regret the purchase.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Handy Little Helpers These Painter's Tripods are very handy for helping with painting projects. They raise your project about 2" above your work table. This enables you to paint or spray the flat surface and all four edges easily. With most applications, you are able to paint a flat side, reverse while wet and paint the other flat side (if needed). The pointed ends of the tripods usually leave a slight or no long term mark in the paint. These tripods are about 2" leg to leg and all 10 nest together for a height of 4". Very easy to store. The tripods can be snapped together, leg to leg for different needs. The only reason I gave this product a rating of 4 is because the legs are a little flimsy compared to other painter tripods I have used.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great value, nice interlocking feature This is a pretty simple product, but one I've found especially handy. This is an excellent value - I bought a set of 10 from another brand years ago that cost twice as much, and didn't have the interlocking feature. Which brings me to the one really feature of these, besides their base purpose - two of the three feet have holes, the other has a peg that fits into the holes. This allows for connecting multiple tripods together. This might not be terribly useful for larger pieces where the tripods need to be more spread out, but for smaller items it's excellent - several times I've damaged the finish on a piece because one of the tripods slipped and I had to go back and fix it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Simple and effective These little tripods are the kind of thing you don't think about until you see them used, then you can't do without them. They are an affordable item to put in your paint tool collection. The instructions say you can paint and turn over while wet, but you may get a small mark at the point. It is OK if it is the inside of a cabinet or such. Otherwise, let it dry overnight and try the other side. Lifted up, drying is secure from interference with drop cloths. Finally, I find these tripods are useful to paint the SIDES of long items. As for stability, you can pop a few together since they link. The link option also allows a "cradle" for something like a dowel, according to the instructions.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very Handy Very handy for painting Cabinet doors, shelves, etc. Be sure to paint the top side of your project last because the points of the triangles might leave tiny divots in the paint. They are better than sawhorses, laying flat on the ground, or a workbench. I would definitely recommend these!
