Answer This Question

A:  Hi, Billy - Pipe compound or yellow Teflon tape should be used only on the IPS threads. Not on the brass-to-brass threads of the fitting. Check out our CSST Design & Installation Manual available at homeflex.com/resources. Thanks.

by|Dec 7, 2022

A:  You do not need to apply pipe dope or tape to brass connections, however, I have had small leaks with these pieces i the past and a little dope took care of it.

                    Q:Why doIneed a bonding clamp?

                    Answer This Question

A:  Hi, Tlc - In accordance with the National Fuel Gas Code and Uniform Plumbing Code, a minimum of 6g bonding wire MUST always be used to connect the CSST and/or CSST/Black Iron assembly back to the grounding bus bar in the electrical enclosure. A bonding clamp is necessary to provide a secure connection. Please access our HomeFlex Underground Design & Installation Manual using this link to view section 4.10 on page 37 for details. https://homeflex.com/downloads/HOME-FLEX_Installation_Manual.pdf

                      Absolutely no issues
I redid the gas lines supplying the dryer, range, water heater and furnace with these fittings - no leaks no issues. I did use a file to smooth any burs and rough cuts before attaching the fitting. Also as indicated in the instructions you only turn the nut, not the center part of the fitting when tightening - this keeps the non-metallic gasket from being cut up by the tubing as it compresses. No leaks at all.

                      Nothing but Leaks
Alpha Flex (now called Home Flex) is a horrible system. The pipe is good, but the connection system was not well thought out. There is only one non-metallic washer that seals against the stainless steel pipe. Out of the six connections I made, I could only get one to seal so no bubbles appeared when performing the leak test. I cut off several connections and tried again. When I disassembled the connections, everything looked smooth, but yet they still leaked. A couple connections were obviously deformed. When tightening the connections, the pipe folds back on itself and is supposed to create a smooth seal against the washer. I can appreciate the ingenuity of the system, but in four words: IT DOES NOT WORK! I could not tighten the connections enough to stop the leaks. I purchased Pro-Flex connectors from Lowe's and they are much better and easier to use. They come with a thick silicone washer to seal to the connector. I made an airtight connection on the first try. You also don't have to tighten the connections as much, just hand tight and then another 0.25-0.50 turn more.

                      Horrible product
The gasket on this product is a one time use and doesn’t seat well at all no matter how clean you cut the gas line.

Hi, LeeroyJenkins - Sorry to hear you had difficulties with our brass CSST fitting. Make sure you're using our fitting on our pipe. You can't mix manufacturers. Yes, it is important that a clean cut is applied to the ss tubing. If there's a "shard" file it down. Cut back the yellow jacket 2 valleys of the CSST (about 1") and place the flange nut on the CSST pipe. Then insert the retainer ring in the last valley of the CSST. Be sure to squeeze it enough to stay in the valley, but not too tight as to oblong the part which can make the ss out of round. Then screw the 2 main brass pieces together. Continue to tighten until you cannot tighten any more. Along the way, you may feel that you "stripped" the fitting (it'll get easier) but that's simply the ss turning in on itself creating a nice smooth end which embeds on a hard fiber gasket. Generally, you'll see 1 thread or less in between the 2 brass pieces. As for "one time use", the fitting can be taken apart, a new gasket inserted, and reused. If you'd like to speak, please call our Technical Services Department at (661) 257-3923 x 1026 (Dave) or x 1010 (Jon) M-F 8a - 5p. Thanks. ValenciaPipe

                        DO NOT BUY THESE
Do not buy these. They are worthless and will not seal the line. I am doing a major project and needed 12 of these and only 3 of which sealed and the rest ended up in the trash or being returned.

Needed the components right away as the appliance installer was headed my way. Looked the product up online, it was in the store so I made the 120 mile round trip quickly and purchased it. Saved my day having it in stock.
