Q:Does this product come with instructions? From reviews it seems not, as you have to use dry, wipe in one direction, small areas at a time, and when full shave/slice off the outer layer. Large areas will require multiple sponges.

Answer This Question
A:Â The Soot Eraser does not come with instructions but your comments seem to sum up the process. I have not heard of someone slicing off the outer layer when it gets dirty but it makes sense.

Didn't work at all. Lots of elbow grease to no avail. Use vinegar, and a regular kitchen sponge instead.

I used this soot eraser to clean the soot off my fireplace surround and it works great! The surround "was" a very bright white split mosaic rock face with embedded sparkles, very beautiful natural rock when I gave my fireplace a makeover. Unfortunately, my contractor installed the wrong type of burner on my gas fireplace and as a result after just a few times after using it when winter started, I started noticing soot building up everywhere! I was concerned that I would have to replace the rock but this soot eraser helped really clean it up. This eraser is a "one time" use so recommend buying a few based on the size of your job. Definitely like this product and going to buy more to keep my surround looking clean and sharp....now the contractor just needs to paint my living room ;-)

Possibly, my expectations were too high for this product. i think the product failed the claims "miserably"
despite substantial "elbow grease" effort!
The grind discharge from the block left more mess to clean up with very, very minimal result in soot removal from a limestone fireplace face.

It works!!
I had my doubts about this thing but it worked very well! I used it on the stone around my hearth and it looks like new (with very little effort required). I made the mistake of also using it inside the fireplace - it worked fabulously but it basically used up the entire sponge. Once it gets full you really can't use it, it just starts spreading soot. No way to clean it but at the price it's worth a new one to clean it up at the start/end of the season!
