I currently have a house full of kidde interconnected smoke and co detectors. Can I replace one of them with this or would all of the detectors need to be Halos?
Asked by: Brandon
Don't listen to jazzy1122 and the interconnect warning. Smoke detector interconnects are relay based and there's ZERO need for integration testing, they just work. As long as the detector supports three wire, it's good to go. No insurance company in history has ever made this an issue and there are good reasons for going with different companies and features. It's wise to have a combination of optical and ion based detectors. You also don't need to pay for CO detectors for a second floor home with an open staircase design as CO sinks to the lower floor so one or two hybrid smoke / CO detectors are good there. You also don't need every detector to send a warning to your smart phone so if you are into that sort of thing, tossing in a WiFi detector is cool as well. Also don't forget that with multiple brands, if one has a manufacturing flaw like a bad batch of components, it's unlikely the other brand would suffer from the same flaw.

Are there user selecable options for the weather alerts? Are the alerts by county or zip code? Do the alarms react to Amber alerts?

I live in a very large county and I am near the north end, the weather during thunderstorms can be quite different over a 20-25 mile distance. My current WX radio will awaken me for an Amber alert in the middle of the night.
Asked by: HT
Full customization. Either via WiFi or Smart Things, not both. I suggest Smart Things or another ZigBee platform as WiFi is too crowded, that is if you actually want alerts when you're away. You will be able to set what type of alerts and for which county. And twenty miles is not large. The metro I live in is bigger than that. I would recommend just the life impacting stuff, as tornadoes have been know to travel further than 20 miles. Your only option for by zip would be a phone app, but since said data is not provided by NWS you run the risk of not being alerted due to a scripting or human error.

If I would be purchasing this for parents with no internet and no smartphone what are the advantages and disadvantages?

Asked by: Daughter
Biggest Advantage - no false alarms period. The smoke sensors won't go off unless the temperature also is rising. They also won't go off because of a shower, if it detects an humidity rise. Disadvantage - you're married to it for config. If the weather alerts is what your after, get a SAME weather radio and a plug lock. (my wife kept unplugging it which is why I bought these, and the false fire alarms were driving me batty) If they had even a tablet and a smart things hub, you'd have ready access to temperature and humidity sensors. Although they aren't calibrated as all the alarm cares about is rate of rise or fall. during setup you can calibrate the temp sensor to match a current reading on a wall thermostat.

Another quick question ... will these operate in "connected mode" using wifi or do they need to have the interconnect wire hooked up to each one?
Asked by: JJ
No they need the interconnect. They will operate independently but the features I bought these for don't work without the interconnect. If your home is reasonably soundproof, get them wired.
