Has anyone purchased this recently? The bad reviews talk about the crank being plastic, is this still an issue or has it been upgraded? $300 is a lot to spend for an umbrella that may only last a year.
Asked by: md2002
The rope is what is bad. The crank attaches to the rope which allows you to open or close the umbrella. I have had 3 of these. One of them is still working after 1 year. On the other 2 the ropes snapped in less than 3 months. It is a real bear to fix. I am pretty handy and have all my own tools. Yet it takes hours and you have to go buy your own rope to re-attach. It's rather absurd they use such a weak cloth rope, I am surprised my 3 rd one has not snapped. Unless or until they replace the rope they are using I would NOT get one of these umbrellas.

Does this move easily? Wheels?

Asked by: Jordan23
The bags of sand actually sit on the surface of where ever you place the base. In order to move it you will have to deconstruct the base and pull up the sand bags. There is no way to move it, even 5 inches, after putting it together. There is no bottom to the base, just the sand bags.

We needed a sturdy umbrella to block sunlight on our patio and this umbrella is exceptional! We did a lot of research and made several trips to Home Depot and finally decided on this. We initially considered using a few smaller umbrellas with stands but this umbrella is big enough on its own. It was easy to set up, is easy to open and maneuver, and the materials are good quality. The sand was easy to add to the bags and we made sure the bags were in the stand when we filled them.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Even with over 200lbs of sand in the base, an... Even with over 200lbs of sand in the base, an only mildly strong wind knocked the umbrella over within the first week of owning it. Fortunately the base pieces were only disassembled and not broken at all, so I reassembled and we are just being a little more cautious with putting the umbrella down as soon as any wind picks up (we would already put it down when not in use). Otherwise the quality is pretty good, and it serves our purpose well, so I didn't want to return it for this reason. However, if I hadn't gotten it on sale for $299, I would probably be less than happy for the money. I would typically stay away from something that has a 3 star review but in this case, as long as you are careful to put it down when there is any wind present, for the money it serves its purpose. I would still choose this over a comparable $700-1,000 cantilever umbrella, which seems to be a pretty typical price elsewhere for a large, quality patio umbrella.

I am an above average athletic male and I now hate the weighting system they designed for this. The bag that you have to fill has a small hole that is resealable with velcro. The bag has inner compartments that you have to fill by reaching your hand in the bag and trying to push sand in all of the nooks. It requires 110lbs of sand in each of the 2 bags. Then you are going to have to lift the 110lb awkward sandbag and carry into place. After 45 minutes of filling the first bag with sand, I set the bag down near the base and a 6" portion of the seam opened spilling sand out. This is the poorest weight system I have ever seen. I wish it took water like other umbrellas and portable basketball hoops. I am not sure why they just didn't make individual tough bags for the individual bags of sand; then you could just put the entire bag of sand in their bag, and not wrestle with a big bag of 110lbs of dead weight.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Umbrella broke Short version: Might want to try a different brand. We bought it less than a year ago. The main stem that supports the spokes from underneath the umbrella fabric broke. There isn’t any way it could have been caused by wind, or any other kind of misuse. It looks as though the attachment between two metal parts is plastic and the plastic broke. (I’m not an expert. Whatever. Darn thing broke in a way you can’t plan for or mitigate. Fortunately it’s under warrantee and the customer service associate was very helpful. It remains to be seen whether we’ll have problems that the other reviewers mentioned. (Wrong item, months to deliver, etc.) Regardless, I would have spent a little more or a lot less just to make sure we didn’t have to go through this. (Paid $299.) The CS person told me they sell millions of them, though, so perhaps only a small few of us have problems and you’ll be the majority who continue to love it. And I do love it!!

The mechanism used to raise the heavy umbrella is a crank handle on a string. The string is inside the bar and it leads out to the top of the umbrella. It snapped rendering the brand new item inoperable. I called Hampton Bay which is the same as Home Depot. They gave me a hard time because I had only the owners manual with the warranty paperwork and not the actual HD receipt. ( BTW I paid with my HD card so they could see that I bought it less than a year ago). Needless to say, it is now junk that I need to hire a truck to get rid of. So disappointing. DO NOT PURCHASE!!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A heavy duty well designed umbrella First of all the box with contents weighs over 70 lbs. I drug it into to the house by myself but I should have had help. That's not a complaint because this thing is built like a tank. The poles are 2" in diameter and the cloth is made out of Olefin. The instructions are straight forward and the umbrella can be put together by one person. Just be patient and take your time. The base is awesome. The base is the largest I have ever owned. The one we threw away last year just had a metal X that we had to put cement blocks on. This one has that metal X inside of a very nice plastic shell. Inside the shell is 220 lbs of sand in two bags. Now this isn't overkill. You are going to need all that weight to keep this impressive 11' wide overhanging umbrella from falling over. Once you have it all put together it moves up and down very easily with a hand crank. There are 40 tiny solar powered light that will easily light up a picnic table.
