Questions & Answers

Will this fan cause issue in AFCI circuit?

Fan worked. Installed AFCI breaker in circuit and now trips as soon as fan turned on
Asked by: Perplexed
If the fan is installed/working properly it should not cause an arc fault trip. The National Electric Code (NEC), as of it's 2017 edition, does not require arc fault protection in bathrooms. Currently, only bathrooms, garages and unfinished areas of a houses do not require arc fault protection (Article 210.12(A)). However, although the NEC doesn't require arc fault protection for bathrooms, it doesn't forbid it either. In addition, local towns/counties can have more stringent requirements than set out in the NEC and thus might require arc fault protection for bathrooms. As far as troubleshooting, make sure there is no spot where the neutral wire is touching the ground wire. Both dual function AFCI/GFCI breakers and standard AFCI breakers have built in GFCI protection (standard AFCI breakers only have GFCI protection for equipment, meaning they won't meet NEC requirements for GFCI protection of people in homes). Any GFCI will trip if the neutral and ground are touching and in my experience that is almost always what causes an AFCI breaker to trip.

Is the exhaust duct 3" or 4"dia. for Hampton Bay 50CFM #TY-50-A; SKU 986755?

Asked by: Patrick
4" but I believe that they also make a different model of the same basic fan that has a 3", I necked down the 4 inch to a 3" to fit my existing roof vent and the fan seems to work just fine.

The specs indicate that it is for 12V. Is that true? Or a typo?

My current fan is just vented into the attic. The attic does have vents and an exhaust fan. Can this fan be set up the same way?

Asked by: DIYer
Blowing humidity into the attic can cause condensation problems. Be careful!

It was working fine for a couple of days and then it started making noise for some reason I still need to replace it I only ask for that specific model so I can replace the old one that's completely burnt out and it's so dirty and filthy I figure it'll be easier instead of installing a whole news system so I'm still debating to change out and cut the sheetrock to do everything all over again or tried to give it another shot

We bought two of these as they were on sale, work as expected, very quiet. They are not your standard size, so retrofitting requires some reframing/drywall, and they also stand above the ceiling joists a bit higher than many others. A true test of quality is also longevity. We shall see.
