Questions & Answers

How weather resistant is the umbrella fabric? Does the quality hold up well in rain, sun, and snow?

Dear PittBull, thank you for your inquiry. As the manufacturer, we aim to answer your question for the Hampton Bay 8 ft. Square Aluminum Cantilever Offset Outdoor Patio Umbrella in Chili Red earnestly. The umbrella fabric and frame are not weather-proof. We highly advise to keep the umbrella away from fire, extreme heat, freezing conditions, and inclement weather such as rain, hail, sleet, snow, or wind. The fabric is vented for air-circulation and is not water-proof; water will fall through the fabric. The fabric is resistant to UV rays and is therefore fade resistant; however, it does not block UV rays. Please note that weather related damages are not covered by the limited warranty. We suggest the umbrellas to be covered or stored in a dry place when not in use to protect it from being compromised of its structural integrity. We hope we answered your question.

Dear Emily, thank you for your inquiry. As the manufacturer, we aim to answer your question for the Hampton Bay 8 ft. Square Aluminum Cantilever Offset Outdoor Patio Umbrella in Midnight Navy Blue earnestly. Since water has less density compared to sand, it is best to use sand to fill the base because sand is heavier. The base is not large enough to have the same amount of weight as sand would, if it was filled with water. Therefore, we highly recommend the use of playsand instead of water to fill the base. We hope we answered your question.

How does the material stand up to UV 5500 feet above sea level? Is it UV durable or is there a cover available for when it is folded down? Last year I tried a shade cloth here. In three months UV reduced it to tissue paper and a light breeze finished the job.

On page 9 of assembly instructions: 5 Slide the support tube rims (J) down the lower umbrella pole (C) and connect it to the brackets (A & B). Connect it how? There is nothing to connect it to. It just sits on the bracket. Also, the number to call for assistance has too many numbers 855-HD-HAMPTON = 855-434-267866

We like it once we wrestled it a bit
I'll go first. Setup is way easier with 2 people.Canopy, fully extended is 7'9" but you will need a full 9' to fully extend it. Base is 31" square.Pay attention to the bottom circular piece around the pole. it was part J I think. it's only purpose is to support the 2 top pieces when closed so dont overthink why it's just laying there in the instructions. I used 4 bags of HD play sand, kept them in their bags and didn't use the supplied blue saddlebags.Dont lock the top until you have run it up and down a few times and can lock it. BTW, only locks at 90 degree intervals. Getting the locking mechanism to line up and then the top covers on was the most difficult parts. We enjoy the shade and it is easy to raise and lower. Would buy it again but wish it had better instructions.

Overall, the umbrella works and is sturdy, but the quality of construction leaves much to be desired. I finished assembling the umbrella yesterday and so far it's working well for the intended purpose. That said, I've encountered multiple design flaws and had to repair the crank mechanism after it literally popped out of the crank assembly. The screws holding the crank in place are tiny self-tap screws seated in plastic, and hardly adequate. It took me an hour to figure the clutch mechanism out and fit it back in place, and then I ended up replacing the screws with something much more substantial. Even then, I strongly suspect I will eventually have to retrofit the crank assembly with bolts. Making matters worse is that the crank assembly cannot be separated from the umbrella - it's attached with rivets. Indeed, the umbrella assembly is held together with rivets in multiple places, making repair difficult if not impossible. There are several aspects to the design that are frustrating a well. Although the umbrella can be tilted along the axis of the supporting pole, that is the only direction of tilt that's possible with the current design. Because I'm using it on a narrow terrace, I would have loved to have been able to tilt it in the other direction. The other design issue is that the supporting pole can be rotated, but it locks in place only on the diagonals. Because the base is huge, that orientation only serves to make the base more in the way and more likely to be tripped over. At 19 floors up, the last thing I want to have is something to trip over. With limited space for the base, I need to keep it in a corner and, hence, I can't use it on a diagonal. My only option is to keep the supporting pole unlocked. Thus I can't use it in anything stronger than a gentle breeze. The use of sand in the base would seem to be straight-forward, but given the mixed reviews, I wasn't willing to chance having the umbrella blow off the terrace in a stiff wind. Instead I used a set of anchors designed to withstand hurricane-force winds, and bolted it directly to the terrace decking. Frankly, the base should have been designed with the option to bolt it down in the first place. In summary, I like the overall concept of t his umbrella and the cantilevered offset avoids blocking our view, but there's probably a reason it's inexpensive. It's sturdy, but it's questionable whether it will last and it's not designed to be repaired. On top of that, there are aspects of the design that are frustrating and illogical.

Hello, we're sorry to hear that the product you purchased did not meet your full expectations. For any questions or concerns, please give us a call at (866) 602-1800.
looks great but quality is iffy at best
This umbrella was easy to put together (one person). Looks great. The problem is the quality. We had it for 2 weeks and used it 3 times. The third time i extended the umbrella the turn handle popped off. The screws were stripped out of the housing. 3 times!? I would look at others before buying this one.

Love this umbrella. Comes complete with base, which in many cases is an extra purchase. Just buy sand to fill it. The base is designed well with canvas bags to hold the sand. We put the whole thing together in 1/2 an hour or so and I am sitting under it as I write this review. Our table that we have this over sits in front of a window. We love that the umbrella sits off to the side so when not in use it's not obstructing the view from our window. The way it tilts back keeps the sun off us all afternoon, yet the umbrella is out of the way off to the side. It slides/tilts smoothly and cranks up easily. Love, love, love it!

People who are saying this thing is blowing all over the place obviously aren't putting in the recommended amount of sand in the bags. I put in at least 180 lbs of sand and there is room for more. If you fill it to 200lbs this thing is going no where. For $199 this is hard to beat.

Purchased in April, but by August the threads in the crank arm completely stripped out, making the umbrella unable to open. The crank arm was assembled by the manufacturer, so this was not an issue with home assembly. The product uses poor quality plastics.

Good cantilever umbrella I purchased 3 weeks ago. It serves my purpose on my deck. I can swivel over my loungers or my grill which helps with the summer sun. Also another bonus, it can be stored in place when not in use.

Slick design and we are generally happy. Quality to cost ratio high. One minor thing: Umbrella swivels 360 degrees around the stand, but it only locks-in every 90 degrees (i.e. in 4 positions). You can position it between these locked positions, but a good gust of wind will push it to the next lock.
