Questions & Answers

Will this lamp work with dimmable CFLs or LEDs?

Dimmable CFLs and LEDs require different power requirements than traditional incandescent bulbs. Does this lamp work with dimmable CFLs and LEDs with the DualBrite feature?
Asked by: Mike
Mine does. Try Cree 100 watt A21 LED or Philips 100 watt A21 LED.

What kind of bulbs can I use for this light fixture?

Asked by: Roy
I'm using dimmable LED. Try Cree 100 watt A21LED or Philips 100 watt A21 LED. This lamp fixture was designed about 15 years ago, so there was no provision for LED at that time. But it seems to work fine with today's LEDs.

Even this light is good if you don't mind taking the lamp off the wall to adjust the sensitivity switch. This feature deserves the Darwin Award. You know how much fun it's to mount a lamp on a wall, then if you need to adjust the sensitivity, you have to remove the lamp off its base to adjust the switch mounted inside the housing. Fire the manager responsible for this product.

The sensitivity setting was a little tricky to get right, and the fixture had to be pulled and re installed several times before I got it right. I found that getting the posts that hold the fixture in place were difficult to line up with the holes in the fixture, and created some frustration during the re installations. To save time, and extra work I suggest starting with the sensitivity settings at mid point!

I bought three of these lights a year and a half ago when I built a garage. I have waited to leave this review to give the lights time to perform well or poorly. They have performed extremely well. When I mounted them, I sealed the top and sides with clear silicone to prevent water from possibly getting in. I left the bottom unsealed, in the event water did penetrate it could exit. That has not happened. I just cannot praise their performance enough! I liked them so well I bought a white one to put on our front porch - although not as old, it has also performed flawlessly. These lights are very attractive and look great on the garage and house. They are easy to adjust and I highly recommend them.

I've had these lamps before from many years ago and it was time to replace them due to age. The sensors film area was cracked and i figured I'd get the same type again. The are not bad looking and traditional and they get the job done for the light required by the garage door. I installed both lamps and they worked fine for about a couple of weeks. I then noticed that one lamp was not coming on with the sensor no matter how close i go to it. I turned the switch on and off to reset and still nothing. I also put to test mode and the light would come in dimly. Then one evening not long ago it seemed to be working but the light would stay on for about 15 seconds and not the one minute I had it set to. I went to look for a Hampton Bay website and nothing comes up. It seems to lead to the Home Depot website. No email around that I could tell. The instruction booklet shows the website but again it doesn't lead to anything. It is rather strange that in this day and age there is no easy way to communicate with Hampton lighting through the Internet. There is an 800 number on the instruction booklet so i will try that number. This s rather inconvenient with not making it easy to contact them via email which is preferred when we're busy.

Nice looking but I can only give it one star. Before I installed this one I installed two regular double flood lights and all of the adjusting switches ie time on,sensitivity, etc are on the outside so that after you mount those lights you can easily make the adjustments. On this porch light the sensitivity adjustment is on the back of the mounting box so after you mount it and the sensitivity is not right, you have to remove the light from the wall, make the adjustment, and remount it again! Huh?! Bad design. I had to do that three times until I had the sensitivity adjuster where I wanted it. My recommendation - buy one that has ALL the adjustments on the outside.

They have been installed 6 weeks. I connected to switch. Only set up for Motion. Turned off dust to dawn feature. Installed 60w dimmable LED's. I have not had any problems with the LED's as of yet. If I do I will be returning the fixture. The only problems that I have had are that the mounting Screws that came with the light fixture to attach the Offset Swivel Crossbar to the electrical box are metric and fit loosely. If you have existing Offset Swivel Crossbar it wont work. Also if you need to cut them be careful. NEC404.10 (B) Requires ALL electrical boxes to have 32 threads per inch. Also I find that the side range of the motion sensor is very small when coming from the side. about 3 feet out and approaching from the side it will turn on when I get with 2 feet or less.

The motion sensor lens finally deteriorated and caused it to shut down. The SKU on the box and inside the fixture base is the same as the old one. The User Guide is the same. The construction is the same (metal, not plastic). Since the design is at least 15 years old, LEDs were never considered. Mine works just fine using today's dimmable 100 watt A21 LED lamp. I'm using just 7 watts when dim, 23 watts bright. Still plenty of light for front door. I set the sensitively to just lower than maximum rather than at the midpoint, use Dusk to Dawn, and 5-minute timer. Put a little dab of Vaseline on the threads of all the screws. Strongly recommend silicon sealer (GE Clear Silicone Weatherproof - blue label) around the mounting plate to wall. I get to keep my old one in case one of the glass panes somehow gets broken. There are no spare parts available anywhere.
