Questions & Answers

Can I use it on a wooden deck

Asked by: Eb
Although you could put this on fire resistive tiles or pavers, I would surely be concerned that sparks, embers, radiant heat of convective heat could, and would start a fire. Too close to a railing or your home... to near a roof eve or awning, or UNDER anything and "POOF" you will be calling 911 and filing an insurance claim. As a firefighter, we respond several times a year to addresses because of these issues. Away from combustible materials...10-12 feet. Always monitor when lit or hot. Check with your local Fire Dept for any restrictions regarding open burning. Some restrict leaves or paper, others restrict burning due to air quality, others require a permit if there is a burn ban enforced or if it it a "red flag warning" day or a windy day. If the least bit in doubt...Don't burn!

How hard is this to assemble? Im buying this for a gift should i download the pdf document?

Asked by: Chuckles
THE HARD PART IS PUTTING THE OUTER RING ON. THE HOLES ON MINE WERE TRICKY TO LINE UP. THEY COULD HAVE PUNCHED IN SLIGHTLY ELONGATED SLOTS IN THE SIDE INSTEAD OF DRILLED HOLES TO FIX THE PROBLEM. ANYWAY LINE THE RING UP AS CLOSE AS YOU CAN AND TRY TO HAND TIGHTEN A FEW THREADS FIRST. YOU COULD EASILY CROSS THREAD IT IF YOU START OFF WITH A SCREWDRIVER DUE TO THE LOUSY FIT. PUT IN ALL THE SCREWS FIRST ALL THE WAY AROUND AND THEN GRADUALLY TIGHTEN THEM ALL.

Does the sides have wire mesh too: Also, will it allow you to burn papers in it?

Asked by: Sally
Yes it does. It would burn papers just fine.

Customer Reviews

Crossfire 29.50 in. Steel Fire Pit with Cooking Grate is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 1720.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Black Friday Buy (after one fix) This is an excellent fire pit for the Black Friday sale price. The only problem was that the T-bolt would not hold when screwed into the cooking grate. Had this been a returned item I would have guessed that a previous buyer had stripped the threads. Since this item quickly sold out and I did not want to deal with an exchange hassle when I was otherwise satisfied, I simply bought a 3/8" thumb screw at my local hardware store and tapped new threads. Problem solved as shown in the attached picture. Since I haven't seen any other reviews indicating a problem with the T-bolt, I'm still giving the fire pit a good rating. Assembly took about an hour at a relaxing pace. The bowl itself is about 2 feet in diameter and fairly deep, so it supports a good sized fire. We lit our first fire in it, and enjoyed that the design allowed us to see the flames through the sides. For now, I cut a contractor's trash bag opening it into a single flat piece and bungied it around the fire pit to protect it from the weather.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love it! Great Buy! I love the open mesh area on the sides! It lets more heat radiate out the sides of it. If you don't put too much wood in it and get it too hot, you can rest your bare feet on the outer ring and warm them up! :) My friends and I sat around this fire pit for like 5 hrs yesterday night and it was awesome. Felt just like camping, but in the back yard. Another bonus, this fire pit is pretty big. Three regular sized peices of fire wood fit in it no problem. It's not some sissy little fire pit like some you see! I didn't buy it with the intention of using it to cook at all but decided why not try it, and threw on some hotdogs. Tasty! I was impressed! If you have it sitting on lawn it will kill the lawn below it, but I really can't hold that against it :) I highly recommend this fire pit. It would be awesome to take camping too because of the cooking grill. It's very sturdy for sure, but it does not weigh a ton so easy to move with one person. The mesh lid also really keeps in the ash. It looks great, and it functions great. Very happy with it!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good depth and side mesh allow for good capacity and long burning time Have had this fire pit in use for about 4 weekends and haven't had any issues with it so far. I rated just below perfect, as I want to see how this piece weathers over a years time. But, as of right now, this is a great fire pit becuase of its depth which gives it capacity to hold more wood. The design allows for longer burning time because of its' depth and wood capacity, so less times you have to feed the fire. And the taller side walls are mesh which allows air in for very good combustion . So whatever you put in this pit, will burn down to ash if you let it...nothing remains...its very efficient. And of course, for the money, its a good buy. I havent used the grill, but its not why I bought it. I bought it for its size and the depth of the pit and it works great. I am anticipating, over time, the cover screen, and the screening around the pit will rust, as this is painted steel, but I do plan on doing my part to keep it newer, by a little sanding and some hi-temp paint. I hope to get like 5 seasons out of it. So far so good

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This is a fine fire pit Great open design, even heating all around. Assembly went fine, just need to take your time about it. Found a 22.5 inch cooking grill that I adapted for a bottom fire grate. Used a mason chisel to split some red bricks to elevate the grate 2.5 inches off the sand. Worked like a charm, wood burned even and hot, almost no smoke. Just kept adding wood well into the night, burned great. Ash clean up with a brush and small dust pan, finished with a lawn blower set on low to get fine ash out; left clean sand on bottom, which I topped off with 3/4 lb fresh sand to replace sand lost. Used a vinyl cloth backed 54 inch round table pad to cover the grill and secured the cover with 2 inch metal binder clips that I clamped to the outer ring. Will see how the cover holds up in weather. Fire pit finish held up well, looks tough.

Had the first one for about 5 years and used it a LOT. It eventually rusted thru the bottom . . . but considering that it stayed outside thru all weather, was hauled it all over the country camping and loaned it to neighbors for parties it certainly served us well so we bought another. The cooking grate is ideal, the size is perfect and it's portable. Love this fire pit and hopefully will be able to get another when the new one is all used up. By the way, we will continue to use the old one until the hole in the bottom gets too big to hold fire wood!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing Deal This is a fabulous deal, especially for the price. Home Depot really scored a home run on this. You can buy similar Landmann products for $200 online or buy this at Home Depot for under $100, and it includes an adjustable pivoting cooking grate. It's easy to assemble, well constructed, and charmingly simple. There are some tradeoffs for the simplicity, like no trap door below to remove the ashes. Landmann recommends using about 5 pounds of sand in the bottom to prevent corrosion of the metal, which I never thought of but is probably very effective. The only down side to that is cleaning the ashes out of the sand. My guess is the best way to do that is dump everything into a bucket, and wash the ashes out by churning the whole thing with a strong stream of water from a hose. If you are into burning wood or charcoal to cook or just for the effect, chances are you don't mind cleaning things up like a real man too, hee hee. Seriously, this is a phenomenal deal.

The product was well-made, easy to assemble, and sturdy, unlike the first fire pit I purchased (and at a much higher price!) The bottom grate (NOT the cooking grate) did rust after being out in the rain, but that's no big deal, it will be cheap to replace or easy to clean and repaint. I would suggest a couple drain holes in the bottom before the final painting/powder coating, which would allow any accumulated water to drain. Also, remember to buy a bag of cheap sand and put a couple inches in the bottom to protect the finish and deter rust. The metal is fairly thick, I plan to clean and repaint as needed for several years to come. I love this fire pit!
