I was splicing 12 and 14 cable and had to use pliers to get the top section seated properly so I could screw the top section down. Once I did that, my new spotlight worked perfectly.

Once you get the hang of how the top cap fits on & how hard to push to pierce the wires, etc., they do a good job. Biggest negative is the cost. IMHO, they should retail for about 1/2 of what they sell for. Then, it would be a no-brainer as to whether to buy this product or use waterproof nuts (which are a lot cheaper but more difficult & messy to install). I tried both (nuts & splice connector) & returned this connector due to cost.

I liked the screw on cap that not on helps the metal connectors to pierce the cable exterior cover, but also helps to permanently maintain the appropriate squeeze pressure against the internal wire which is very important to keep the electricity flowing and keep the lights burning. The slots inside the connector are also an aid to setting the wire in the appropriate position for the connector penetrating points. My connector worked correctly the first time I tried it, and I believe there will be almost no maintenance needed or re-adjustment necessary. Also, I followed the instructions and I taped the entire job with black electrical tape to help to keep the moisture out of the unit. I give this connector an excellent rating at a reasonable price. I'll be using more.

But, once I completed the splice, replacing one that had failed, I realized that this is the right connector for the job. You need to make sure the wires are fully pushed down onto the base piece before adding the top piece, otherwise, the screw threads for the top piece may not catch to tighten the splice connection. But, once the screw threads have started, it's simple to tighten the connection. These are definitely a very good way to splice low voltage landscape lighting cables.

With the 16 ga cable you will probably need channel locks to compress the fitting. But these really worked well for doing feeders off the main run of cable. Actually we like the quality of these and the Hampton Bay lights much better than our previous Malibu lights.

I used 14 gauge wire for both runs and had no issues. The nut that tightens on the bottom of the screw would be easy to lose if you are not careful when opening package, it is stuck to tape in package.

This product was simple to use, very effective and looks like it will hold up to being underground a long time. The connection jaws are heavy also and seem to be non corrosive. better than the rest of the ones I have purchased over the years.

I finally got it to stay in the slot while I tighten down on the two cables. It is not a good design but workable.
