Thank you for your question. For the universal remote controls, the handheld remote has a battery and the receiver does not. The receiver is hardwired to the house electrical supply.

With this remote it only turns fan on/off. You adjust speed by pulling chain on fan. Be sure to have the fan on high speed upon installing. I think this is to be able to adjust. ??? Just thought I had better go by directions. lol.

(What's this)
This is a remote control to use with your ceiling fan. It works well for what it does. It has two buttons on the remote - one for the fan, one for the light. The receiver is designed to fit inside the second shelf of a Hampton Bay canopy. It's shape is such that it will slide into the shelf and fit within the bell shape of the fan canopy. I do not have a Hampton Bay fan, so I wired it up and just layed it inside the canopy. I was not a huge fan of just letting it rest on the wires inside the canopy, but I did not have much other choice. The package contains everything necessary to make it work - including the battery for the transmitter. The code can be set on the transmitter and receiver using dipswitches, reducing potential interference with other devices. Wiring it up was relatively easy and the transmitter works well. It probably took me 30 to 45 minutes to install. It's a "universal" device, so it's designed to work with as many fans as possible. To that end, it is designed for a ceiling fan wired from a single wire / switch that controls power to both the fan and light. The receiver has a hot and return wire on one side, and two hots and two returns on the remote side. It's designed to control / power both the light and fan from one wire / switch. I have two wall switches for my fan - one for the light, one for the fan. I only really cared about the fan, not the light, so I did not use the lighting wires.

Dear Valued Home Depot Customer, we're sorry to hear that you had this issue with the remote. It sounds as though the remote and receiver may have been receiving interference from another device in the area. This can be easily resolved by changing the dip switch settings in the remote and receiver. This will change the frequency of the remote and receiver to avoid interference.

Dear Valued Home Depot Customer, we're sorry to hear that one of the remotes failed. In general, before returning an item, we suggest calling Hampton Bay customer service at 1-855-434-2678 and one of the team members will be able to help troubleshoot and resolve the issue. This may have been a case of a loose wire not making full contact. Most issues can be resolved over the phone with some minor troubleshooting.

Wired it up, it worked for a while then the fan quit. The wiring was verified by a professional and all issues were traced to the control unit. Customer service was a real bear to deal with. Returned this item and purchased one from a competitor.

Dear Valued Home Depot Customer, we're sorry to hear that you had to return the unit. If the remote was installed in a pull chain fan, it is important to note that the fan's pull chains should not be used after the remote is installed and functioning. Changing the pull chain settings will affect the remote's performance.
