Q:I am taking up the old kitchen flooring and going to retile with ceramic that was on their before. Can I go with 5/8 plywood that will attach to the basement floor joists after removing the old rotten planks?

    Answer This Question

A:  Mark, check your local building codes or with a builder, or code official on if this is appropriate use of this for your project.

    by|Mar 16, 2022

A:  That may work, but due to variations between vintage lumber and new (and if you’re just doing patches), you may need to put some floor leveler, so there’s an even surface and your new tiles won’t crack or come loose.

        Q:How many Ply is this?

        Answer This Question

A:  Hello Espiritiv, The number of plies will vary depending on the tree, as well as which mill manufactured it. But typically, ¼ in. plywood has 3-5 plies, ½ in. has 5-7, and ¾ in. has 7-9. Seems like we can safely assume 15/32 in. has at least 4 plies.

            wrong size!!
I ordered a 15/32” sanded plywood 4’x4’ panel online for curbside pickup. I got home and measured it at only 11/32” thick! Do I really need to travel back and wait in the 20 minute entrance line to return this?!

Complete Garbage - Warpage and Blows (separated layers)
Store employees assured me that this wouldn't warp, even in a hot humid attic (it's January right now). It's for a nice attic access door and frame I'm building. Not sure how what they said could be remotely true considering every single piece at the store was already warped, many horribly. After an hour comparing them, I bought the straightest one. I made only a single cut so far, very slowly and carefully cutting the board in half (with the grain, using a 20TPI jigsaw blade, and after taping the cut line to reinforce the fibers beforehand). The cut was perfect and perfectly smooth (unlike the factory-cut edges, which were rougher). I laid both board halves flat for a couple of days, one on top of the other, until I was ready to make the next cuts (the plan was to cut out the door from the larger half, which was then to become it's one-piece, grain-matching frame). When I looked at the wood... it had blows! It's layers are already separating after having only been cut in half so far, handled very gently (because I was going to stain it and want it unmarred), and having been cut and stored for those few days INSIDE our home! Even if I take the time to try to fix this with adhesive and clamps, the majority of the cuts are still ahead of me, and the entirety of its use and lifetime is still ahead of me. Am I to trust that I've already seen the worst? This thing is going to completely fall apart when I cut the next piece out. Considering that they couldn't even glue its layers together during manufacturing, I wouldn't even use this junk for underlayment never mind anything where appearance very obviously matters.

The wood is quite nice. However, every piece in the store had an issue with knots on the side, cracks in the ends or some sort of minor defect. It's mostly fixable with some wood filler and sanding, though. Not the biggest deal.
