    Already precut workbench!
Although because of bad weather ive not been able to assemble the Simpson Strong-Tie Workbench yet but i did unpack the pieces. What really impressed me was that all the lumber is already cut to size so I (50-ish lady) wont need to break out a circular saw to cut anything! This kit was delivered in 3 boxes including the metal connector kit with screws. It seems pretty simple to put together and there's even a HD video i can refer too. The back pegboard is a mixed-species tempered hardboard (particle board to me). The plywood reminds me of MDF board but it will do okay for the workbenches surface area. Im able to make the work surface a little higher, most tables are a bit short for me so this should be comfortable for a taller person like myself to work on., another option would be to put castors on the legs. Im looking forward to putting this in my shed to get my smaller hand tools better organized. I would recommend this easy to build workbench.

The easiest work bench I have ever built
My son is getting bigger and I wanted to surprise him with a work bench of his own, as a plus maybe he will stop cluttering mine. The pieces are all cut and ready for assembly with the Simpson Strong-Tie bench kit. Everything fit together correctly requiring no additional cutting. The only tools I needed were a square, pencil and a drill driver. There is a great picture on the Simpson box to refer to for orientation of the pieces so I had everything together in about 15 minutes. I put the four legs together and marked the height if the Strong-Tie connectors for the top and shelf then began installing the screws. I think I spent as much time getting the pieces organized as I did building the bench. The kit does allow height adjustment of the lower shelf to suit your preference.

    Rapid Build Workbench
This is 3 boxes containing materials to build a Wooden Workbench that is 4’ wide, 5’ tall, and 2’ deep. The height of the bench’s top surface is 3’ high. There is a peg board frame that extends above the bench top surface that is 2’ high and 4’ wide. There are two 3/4 inch 2’ x 4’ plywood boards that create the top bench surface and the full width shelf below. The plywood sent in this kit was hardwood, CARB Phase 2 compliant. Very nice. I would recommend sealing these plywood boards with a light stain and a clear varnish to help with water, grease, paint, or oil that might be spilled on the surfaces. The 2x4s are Appearance-grade SPF (spruce/pine/fir) or equivalent. I would also recommend that at least the bottom ends of the legs be sealed with a paint or varnish to make them resistant to liquids being spilled on the floor. Another consideration for the top shelf is “All-white”. It makes it easier to find dropped items that are very small. The assembled workbench is very sturdy. I tried shaking the bench and there was nearly no give. This sturdiness is due to Simpson Strong-Tie RTC2Z brackets that are designed to hold 3 - 2x4s into a corner configuration. As I assembled the brackets into the 2x4s, I tried to make sure the 2x4s lay flat against the metal plates inside the bracket. The flat plates catch the bottom of the horizontal 2x4s. I tested the Bench sturdiness with 2 – 250 pound objects (1 on top surface and 1 on bottom shelf) and it had no problems supporting the weight. The screws that were in the kit worked to secure the brackets. I was missing 4 screws needed to tie down the very top board that is creating the frame for the pegboard. I used deck screws that were 3” long. They were very easy to obtain. The plywood boards fit nicely onto the frame so I only needed 4 screws on the bottom shelf and 7 screws on the top surface (3 at the back and 2 on each side ). I used 2-1/2” flat-head screws (not provided) to tie down the 2 plywood boards to the wood frame so that screw heads are not above the surface in the work areas. I decided to mount the pegboard on the back of the tall 2x4s. This allows slightly more room for work area over the top shelf. I decided to put the screws through the pegboard and not through the holes in the pegboard. I felt this was stronger than through the holes and the pegboard did not go higher than the top board. Because of the shape of the Simpson Strong-Tie brackets the bottom horizontal support boards have to be 3 or more inches from the floor. I placed my brackets so the spacing from the floor was 7 inches. This should allow me to clean under the bench and to store my favorite flat storage containers below the bottom shelf. For me, the 36” height of the top surface is not a problem for most projects as I am tall. If you want to lower (or level) the top surface, you will need to lower (or raise) the top 4 brackets on their vertical posts. If you have old screw holes that no longer fit, you may have to drill new holes in the bracket. The front two vertical posts may need to be shortened at the top so will not obstruct the bottom of the top, plywood board. If you want to mount something heavy like a Miter saw or bench vice to the top surface, I would recommend putting a 2x4 block of wood under the top and then drilling a hole to bolt down the device. If bench is placed over an irregular surface, you can shim the bottoms of the legs; screw another board to the leg that doesn’t reach the floor;. The front vertical legs of the bench can be moved up and down as needed. Take out the screws that are into the leg being adjusted; move the leg up or down inside the bracket; reinsert the screws. You may have to drill some new bracket screw holes. This is a very nice unit; is easy to build; and looks nice.

The workbench came with easy to read instructions. The wood was really great and cut perfectly. I'm 81 yrs old and I found it easy to put together. I don't think anyone should have a hard time putting it together. The workbench really looks great and is very strong with a lot of room. the
