Q:will this kill poison oak and poison ivy?

      Answer This Question

A:  This product is labeled to kill weeds and weed grasses. It is not specifically labeled to kill a vine or woody vines. It will severely damage any foliage it makes contact with. Only contacted vegetation will be affected. It is non systemic in that it does not travel to the root of the plant. Thank you. P.F. Harris

        Answer This Question

A:  Thank you for your inquiry. Harris 20% Vinegar Weed Killer is non systemic and non selective. This kills foliage by contact. It does not travel to the root. Being non-selective it will kill or severely damaged any foliage it makes contact with. Protect non target plants from spray and from drift of the spray. Thank you, P.F. Harris

I’m not sure how to review this product. I chose a dandelion to test this vinegar weed killer, took a picture (see “Before” pic), sprayed it with the product, then left home for the Memorial Day weekend. So 4 days later, I returned to the location…only to find nothing!—no wilting dandelion flower or leaves at all (see "After" pic). I was perplexed. The only explanation I can theorize is that some critter basically enjoyed a dandelion salad with vinegar dressing! When you think about it, if true, it’s a brilliant, sustainable, eco-friendly way to get rid of weeds—or at least dandelions. So although the weed killer didn’t kill the weed in the standard way, it did, in fact, rid my yard of this weed.

Nope, sorry. This did not work for me. 1.) It smells STRONGLY like vinegar. Whatever you spray smells of vinegar for days. Pungent! 2.) The weeds i sprayed 6 days ago are just beginning to wilt, not die or turn brown, just wilt. 3.) The trigger sprayer works great but is incredibly intermittent. So you never know what you'll get. I like the idea of a vinegar weed killer... but maybe not this one.

This fast-acting weed killer works at relatively low temperatures. I am having a particularly bad problem with ‘jump weed’ that seems to grow quite well at temperatures below 50 degrees. As most of the weed killers that I have used in the past require temperatures to be in excess of 60 to work, and the temperature at the Oregon coast seldom reaches 60 degrees this time of year, I had been trying to control this weed manually with a hoe. As the lot that I am working on is one third of an acre and seeds seem to be germinating as fast as I can kill the plants it has been a lot of manual labor. So, I decided to give this weed killer a try. In addition to working at lower temperatures, it is fast, and it is also non toxic to the fruit trees that I have on the lot. I tested this weed killer by spraying it on a few weeds when the high temperature of the day was about 51 degrees for an hour or so. I then waited four days before I looked at the results of my work. Even though the daily high temperatures barely broke 50 degrees the weed killer killed all of the weeds I sprayed. I have also found that some weed killers kill work so slow that even after the weed has been sprayed the weed can grow long enough to produce new weed seed. This was not the case with this high strength vinegar weed killer. Yes, it is not cheap, but it saves me a lot of work. I sprayed the rest of the lot in a few hours and it usually takes me more than a day to kill the weeds with a hoe.

Having used Harris products before,I know they put out quality products at a fair price and this 20% vinegar weed killer is a great way to move away from the chemical pesticides that can harm the environment and water tables etc. I stopped using chemical pesticides 10yrs ago and would rather pull out weeds or go as natural as possible and this solution is a great alternative. Treat it as any chemical since the vinegar will kill any plant in comes in contact with. Use the spray trigger directly from the container or the handy 32oz bottle for easy portability. It even comes with a handy screw on funnel so you can refil the spray bottle when needed. I sprayed it on a few undesirable plants outside and within a day they began to what I call ‘get sad’ and start to droop. This will work excellent for my application for grasses that grow in between a rock border we have at the edge of the road. The vinegar and water mixture will kill the weeds but be environmentally friendly and hopefully my being conscious will help protect my little corner in the world.

I wanted to limit or totally eliminate my use of potentially carcinogenic weed killers, so I thought I'd give this a try. The initial results seem to be good, we'll see how it works long term. The biggest complaint I have about the product is the sprayer provided for the large bottle doesn't hold prime. It takes a BUNCH of squeezes of the trigger to get it primed and start spraying, but after a few pumps bubbles get in the line and it stops spraying. FORTUNATELY a smaller clear spray bottle (and filling funnel) are included, and that bottle works fine. Don't mess with the sprayer attachment for the big bottle, just use the smaller clear spray bottle. I knocked this product down by a star because of the sprayer issue. You only have to spray a weed to the point of wetness, 2 or 3 squirts, to treat the weed. It seems to work better on small, young weeds as results are visible in a few hours and the weed looks dead after 24 hours. Older and tougher weeds (like nutsedge) seem to be more tolerant of the product. After 24 hours these weed looks sickly, but not dead. Remember that this is highly concentrated acetic acid (vinegar). Food grade vinegar is around 5% concentration. This is 20% concentration. It should be handled with caution and kept away from children as you would pool chemicals. It can cause burns or irritation on skin. However since it is an ORGANIC acid, it will breakdown in soil in time. Your yard may smell like pickles for a while, but it disappears after a couple hours.

This is my first time using vinegar for weed control in my flower garden. I can see results already and I am trying to stay away from harmful chemicals. The smaller container is much easier for me to use than the large, heavier one. The funnel screws on and makes filling the small spray bottle very easy. I plan to use this product in my garden all summer and highly recommend it. Delivery was excellent, as always with Home Depot.
