Is this self-leveling? The website product description says that it is, but it doesn't appear to say that on the bag and the video shows a thick mix that would not be able to level itself.
Asked by: Zjdiy
It is not. Mixed as instructed it is thick and must be spread out. Add a very little more water and if flows better but still must be spread. You can apply in thin coats if needed.

The info on the 25 bag of 547 is ambiguous. The info on the 3 lb box of 547 says it will over 8 sq ft at 1/8"

use on vinyl

Can this be used over a vinyl picnic table?
Asked by: peabodymom
Don't know where to start on this one. I assume you've found a solution by now? If you have a vinyl table that needs a new top. Or you want a concrete top? This is not a good solution for anything flexible or bendable like plastic. Plastic also tends to expand and contract a lot in cold and heat, another red flag. This stuff has polymer in it so, it has a small amount of resilience, but it is still a masonry product. It will crack will only a small amount of bending or stretching sitting on top of a plastic table.

Customer Reviews

547 25 lb. Universal Patch and Skimcoat is rated 3.7 out of 5 by 124.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Worked exactly as described. It's wrong to call the Ease of Installation 'poor'. The very nature of this product makes installation difficult. There's no way around that. It takes proper equipement to mix it, apply it, level it. But - the results are first rate, the curing time reliable and the finished substrate absolutely ideal for further processing. I've used this product before, always with success. All Henry products are more expensive than the competition. They also work exactly as described. I've never once had a call-back because a Henry product failed. That's worth the extra cost. I can't pretend, though, that installation is for anyone who doesn't want to read and follow instructions exactly. Nor is it a task for someone without a fair amount of muscle. I'm in my fifties and have been doing this for decades. If you're a novice, I'd definitely ask a woman or man who's done it before to guide you or you may well learn why the Romans built with cement. It's forever. Right or wrong.

If mixed according to instructions it is pretty thick but does not dry to fast in 65 degree weather inside. Give it a little more water and it flows pretty good. I had a few hair line cracks and bubbles are a problem but not much. I used this on a bay window seat made of painted OSB to level it out and it stuck good. Poured a couple of thin layers to build up to 1/2' at the deepest to a feather edge.My first time using this and I had read that it got hard fast so I was scared to do much at a time but had no problem with that. Maybe because of the temperature. I did this inside in the winter in the deep south. I also put the product through a mesh first to take crush any lumps. It is better if you have bubbles to just let the product dry and sand over them. I used a sand shark (a metal block rasp) to take down any high spots. Skim coat over the holes if needed. I used 1 1/2 25 lb bags total. If I had filled in the low spots with wall board first maybe one bag would have been enough.I thought it would go further. Over all I liked the product and it did the job. It went on smooth but was so sticky it would drag on your trowel. Be sure you wet any tools to help prevent them sticking.

The core problem with this product is it sets up too fast, especially if you do a recommended 3:1 ratio in the mix. It's also pretty prone to chunks if you don't mix the heck out of it. Finally, the packaging is hard to use without making a mess. After lots of frustration, I went with a different brand and haven't looked back since.

Just be ready, don't mix up too much, it cures fast, you can always top coat it again. I mixed half a bag, and it hardened before I could use it all. Keep a spray bottle with water in it handy. As your troweling you may need to spray it, to get a great finish. It was good stuff.
