For those who did kitchen countertops, did you first have to remove your sink? That is probably going to be impossible in this house.. Can you add a bit of color or stain to darken?
Asked by: cory
I removed my sink. I have seen it done without removing the sink but the quality suffers. You can stain it a bit. Make sure you get a good food grade sealer. They are tough to find.

Answering my own question here - on the box it states that the shelf life is 9 months. I'm glad I asked/looked because I was about to apply a box I've had for a couple of years...

The claim on the package is that a layer up to 1/8" can cure well enough in 15 minutes to apply flooring over. My1/16" layer cured in 3 hours. I would have been money ahead to use thin-set.

While leveling a plank floor in a nearly 200 year old farmhouse, we first laid 3/4" plywood with shims underneath, then used Ardex self-leveler for any dips that still existed. Used the Henry's Feather Finish for the final finish layer. Has about a 15 minute set-up time, so it's better to mix up small batches and then work quickly. That's probably why it is sold in small 7 lb. boxes. You can add a little more water than what it calls for while mixing in order to extend the working time. The fast set-up time is good though if you need to be able to walk on the floor quickly. Troweling was smooth and easy. Edges feathered out pretty well, but not to the extent that they seamlessly blended into the surrounding surface, which was okay for us since we will be carpeting over this floor. Adhesion to the plywood and Ardex self-leveler was very good with no lifting or peeling. Henry products are made by Ardex, but are quite a bit less expensive. So, weighing the performance with the difference in cost, I would go still with Henry's Feather Finish.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works well even for an amateur While this product is designed for use as a patch/filler for flooring applications, I used it to skimcoat an old vanity countertop for a 'concrete' look and feel without having to pour a new slab top. It worked very well, although it took a few coats to learn exactly how to get the surface smooth. You do have to work in small batches because of its quick dry time. Stirring the mix can gain you more working time, to a point. Does what it's supposed to and does it well. Not recommended for finish surfaces (like my vanity project) without some kind of concrete sealer on it - it will stain, etch, discolor and eventually wear off if left unsealed and exposed. That said, it's designed to go under a floor where sealing would not be necessary.

I bought it while trying to determine how I wanted to make concrete countertops. I had seen projects where this was used over concrete board instead of pouring concrete. The product dries quick and sold and I can see how that would work. I, however, used it over some 1x4s to make a mirror frame. I applied a layer, let it dry, sanded, and repeated. I also purchased a can of spray concrete stain. While my wife didn't love the spray finish, she love the color of the dried featherfinish and the patterns created in the process. I also used it to fill in some low spots and holes that occurred when pouring my countertops. It worked to level the low spots and provided a different finish in the sanding process. I still have some left in my garage and am constantly thinking of projects I can use it for.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing I found a Pinterest project to update countertops using a more expensive type of concrete and in the comments section of the project someone mentioned this product can be used in it's place, it being just as good and quite a bit less expensive. I'm a novice. This stuff is easy to use and made my countertops look brand new and cool and different. They don't joke around when they say it dries fast too. I made smaller amounts more often and it helped tremendously to cut down waste.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Used for concrete counter tops We used this product to "overcoat" the concrete counter tops we built. I used a 3/4" piece of plywood, covered with aluminum grating screwed to it. Pre-drilled holes for sink and faucet and plugged them. Installed trim on the front to hold in the concrete. Poured concrete and let it dry. At that point we used the Featherfinish to fill in the remaining area to make it level with the top of the front trim sanding as needed in between. After 30 days, stained and sealed it. Looks great! The only advice I will give for the featherfinish is that it is easier to use in thinner layers. We did 3 counters and the thinner you do it the easier it is to work with. You can do it thick and you can stain and seal it.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from great decision had to apply quite a few more coats than anticipated but i am happy with the end result. even with having to purchase more product than i was planning, it was much cheaper than purchasing all new countertops right now and it gives it a cool industrial look. backsplash is being redone now! :)

Henry's FeatherFinish can be applied over black mastic of the 1960's vintage in a thin layer, almost like paint. It allows thin set tile mortar to stick to the floor. Ordinary thin set won't stick directly to black mastic. Henry's can also be used as a leveling cement in a thick layer, but it is more expensive than ordinary leveling cement, so you probably won't use it that way over a large area. (I don't know whether FeatherFinish will work over 1940's vintage black mastic, which resembles tar.) The directions say to mix 1 part FeatherFinish (by volume) to 1 part water. Following them, Henry's FeatherFinish sets up quickly. To trowel it to a smooth surface, it helps to mist it with water. When hard, FeatherFinish isn't brittle like concrete. It's like a cross between drywall and a tough plastic. If you need to chisel out FeatherFinish, you'll have better luck with a wood chisel than a masonry chisel.

I followed the directions as specified using only the amount of water indicated (putting it in first) and then the mix. Then mixed the mixture. The mixture had hardened in the bucket in less than 8 minutes with about half of the mixture still in the bucket. It was already hardening before I could even start spreading it out. I am all about a fast set time, but this was too fast and it not only caused me to waste about half the product, but also wasted one of my buckets and my mixing paddle as it dried on it so quickly I couldn't get it cleaned off in time. And yes, I also tried to re-mix as the instructions indicated but I couldn't even get the mixer into the mix as it was just too hard after about 4 minutes.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Takes some getting used to! So I screwed up a concrete slab floor repair with sack concrete. I was smart enough to make sure all of the newly poured concrete was below the original floor level figuring I could top it with something prettier! I found this product. My first attempt was with one whole box, mixed in a 5 gallon bucket with the correct amount of water. MISTAKE. I had to spread it across a large area. By the time I was finished spreading it was beginning to firm up. Box says don't add more water, mix again. I did that and it bought me another 5 minutes or so then done. I rushed outside to clean up the tools. I let the bucket set up. When I was back inside i noticed some ridges, humps, and other high spots. I took my 2" scraper and shaved off the lumps, high spots, and other imperfections. It was like cutting through putty for another half hour, then too firm for more but I was in pretty good shape. The results were passable, not great. The finish was nice and smooth. I had more to do so I bought another box. This time I also bought some small 2.5 qt buckets. That made this go from frustration to a good product. I used a drill mixer, 1 qt (by volume) mix and 1/2 qt of water. Mix for a minute (it didn't splatter) and go. No rush, no panic, just enough to carefully spread around and make it look nice without setting up. Washed everything, mixed another batch, and pressed on. VERY good results when you aren't hurrying. I used this to fill in some old nail divots from carpet tack strip and the floor is smooth, even, and looks nice. It sets in a hurry, which is good, because 30 minutes later I put on another coat where it was needed. I recommend this product with the following cautions: Mix small batches and have everything ready to go.

Followed the instructions as specified and the material dried/hardened in less than 10 minutes; not even enough time for me to get half of the mixture out of the bucket. Even tried to re-mix after 4 minutes and it was already too hard to mix. Over half the mix hardened in the bucket on me in 10 min.

We had uneven subfloor and this was exactly what we needed to fix it. I only wish it dried a bit faster, but with winter temperatures a slower dry time is pretty much expected. A space heater and fan did help speed up the process. Easy clean-up, too.
