For those who did kitchen countertops, did you first have to remove your sink? That is probably going to be impossible in this house.. Can you add a bit of color or stain to darken?
Asked by: cory
I removed my sink. I have seen it done without removing the sink but the quality suffers. You can stain it a bit. Make sure you get a good food grade sealer. They are tough to find.

Does this product expire or go bad over time? If so, what is its shelf life?
Asked by: icewater
Answering my own question here - on the box it states that the shelf life is 9 months. I'm glad I asked/looked because I was about to apply a box I've had for a couple of years...

549 7 lb. FeatherFinish Patch and Skimcoat is rated 4.3 out of 5 by 183.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good when used as instructed This product is good for patching isolated low areas. For my 300 sq ft living room, I used self leveling underlayment to raise 200 sq ft by up to 1/2 inch. Then I used this prodcut to patch isolated spots in the remaining 100 sq ft. This saved me the expense of having to raise the entire 300 sq ft. I created a new batch for each 4 to 6 sq ft area, and was able to patch each area within the 10-15 minutes work time, After very rough initial smoothing with a putty knife, I went over the area with a 4 ft straight edge to level it out. Then I used a putty knife for the final smoothing and feather edging. This product did not dry sufficiently in 15 minutes for the surface to be usable. Perhaps it is due to the 60 degree room temperature . It dried in about 4 hours. With a spot heater, I was able to reduce the drying time to 30 minutes to 1 hour, depending on the thickness of the patch.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works well to cover cutback on concrete floor We had some old cutback on our basement floor from asbestos tiles. We had the tiles professionally abated, but the cutback tested negative for asbestos so we left it and decided to cover over it with carpet tiles. The carpet tile adhesive needs a good surface, so I skim-coated with this, first coat with a u-notch trowel, and then filling in with a 16" finishing trowel. It's good stuff, easy to work and created a very good finish. You can sand the material once it dries to take off any rough or high spots. I used an orbital sander with 80 grit paper attached to a HEPA vacuum and it was basically dust-free. Overall I'm very happy with the results. I hadn't worked with concrete products before but this easy to work with. It does dry fast, though. I mixed the first box whole but it was firming up before I could spread it. After that I did half boxes and it worked great. Would be nice if they had a bigger size option, hate buying all these little boxes.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from MIX IN SMALL BATCHES ONLY THIS PRODUCT DRIES SUPER FAST SO ONLY MIX ABOUT A CUP OR TWO OF POWDER IN A 1-2 GALLON PAIL WITH A FLAT BOTTOM FOR EASE OF MIXING. YOU HAVE ONLY ABOUT 10-15 MIN. TO APPLY IT. USE A 2"+ PUTTY KNIFE TO MIX. ONLY ADD SMALL AMOUNTS OF WATER AT A TIME. WHEN ADDING WATER MIX FREQUENTLY UNTIL IT IS CONSISTENCY OF PANCAKE BATTER FOR SKIM COATING. THICKER FOR A DEEPER PATCH AND IT WILL DRY QUICKER. USING WIDE DRYWALL KNIVES MAKES SKIMMING A WIDE AREA EASIER. IF IN A HURRY PUT A FAN ON IT TO ACCELERATE DRYING. BE SURE TO NOT STOP WHEN APPLYING AS AFTER ABOUT 15 MIN. IT WILL NOT BE WORKABLE AND THE EXCESS WILL NEED TO BE TOSSED OUT. THE DEEPER THE PATCH THE MORE LIKELY A 2ND COAT WILL BE NEEDED. SAND IT IN BETWEEN COATS FOR BEST FINISH. WHEN DONE IMMEDIATELY RINSE YOUR KNIVES AND BUCKET CLEAN IN WATER.

First off, this product is so hard to work with. It way too thick, which makes more work for the user to level out the material. The product dries way to quick. The box states 15-20 minutes of working time. Mine only lasted maybe 10 minutes max. I had to throw away more than half the product. I followed all the instructions down to a T. I'm going to pick up some ardex feather finish instead. Do it once, do it right.

I needed to take minor dips out of particle board underlayment prior to laying down engineered bamboo flooring. The floor was very solid so I just needed to fill some low areas that maxed out at around 3/16" in 6 feet. I used a 6 foot straight edge to identify low and high spots, marked them and then used Henry's 549 for the low spots. I used the straight edge to level out the product then a large trowel to smooth it out. This worked out very well and the 549 stuck fast to the particle board and did not swell it. It did not crack, even in the very thin spots. I had not done this kind of work previously so I researched a number of ways to do this fix. I found this product at Home Depot and I am very pleased with the results. It is more expensive than I liked but it worked. Know that the product starts to set up very quickly so mix up only as much as you can use in about 15 minutes. I settled on using 1/2 box at a time and that allowed me to level out an area about 10' X 10' and still have time to rinse off the bucket and tools before the product became too hard.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from this stuff is great... i am a 60 year old DYI person. it would have been too expensive to tile my downstairs (slab). I decided to create the wood floors I wanted that would stand up to my husband in regard to the cleaning issue. I removed all carpet and any fake tile. cleaned my floors well and let dry. I mixed henry's to a slightly thicker consistency than pancake batter. I poured on the floors. let it set for ONLY A FEW MINUTES, scored my planks and ran a wood graining tool along the planks. after I did the entire room I let it dry. I sanded the floor lightly and as necessary to smooth out. vacuumed well. I wanted dark floors so I watered down some rustoleum black paint. used a roller to apply. let dry. for a weathered look I sanded areas to remove the paint. sealed with cement sealer. I get so many comments about my wood floors. I can scrub my floors with a brush and they still look great.

I leveled off some low spots on a previously skim job that did not lay totally level. The set time was not less than 15 minutes which is good, I’ll bet the set time was closer to 30 minutes for me. Take your time, spread with flat trowel, don’t over add water!

Needed to create a very shallow (1/4" to 0) 'ramp' underneath a flooring job to level it to the threshold. Very easy to mix, spread and level. Dried in about 30 minutes, ready for the flooring tiles.
