Questions & Answers

As I understood from other Q&A, this table has a water-based lacquer finish. My question is - can i apply water-based polyurethane on top of it for extra protection? Will it not warp the initial finish?

No, you cannot place a water-based polyurethane on top of it.

What can we do now?? How can a table like this be sold without being properly sealed?

Beth

Cleaning the table

Hi Kate - Just wipe the table with a damp moist cloth. Do not use any chemicals.

The table looks incredible and everyone asks where it's from! After using it for 9 months, I've noticed the table top starting to shift. It's inching out ever so slighting from the side panels. In addition, two of the table legs are starting to develop cracks that is growing vertically. I also purchased the matching Edmund bench, but it seems like the issues are only happening on the table. Although the table is still functional, I'm disappointed with the build quality. I was hoping to use this table for 5+ years but looks like it might be replaced sooner than that.

Nice Hardwood Table - Heavy and substantial

I really like this table - I am using it for a desk in my office. I ordered the grey option and it looks a bit green grey coming out of the box. I think with time the green will fade into a more uniform grey. The cuts on the wood are exact and everything fits as expected. The cuts are rather beautiful. I suggest using a socket wrench rather than the little disposable one they provide. I had the unit shiped to me and it arrived fully intact. **Note take off the stickers before you put the legs on I had to remove a leg cause i could see a sliver of sticker poking through. All in all I am very happy - Lets hope this green fades into grey.

That table was beautiful but had to go back due to cracked wood in several places. But the worst part is I have not receive the replacement and it has been over two months since this was ordered extremely bad service from both Home Dept and the shipping companies have reached out to both no answer

Color Nothing Like Picture
Because of the reviews, I was cautious that the color may not work so I had the table shipped to my local store so I could look at it before taking it home. I was shocked by how the top looked! It had the colors of green and red wood swirled into what almost looked like large "paisley" print. It was unattractive and I was disappointed that it looked so different (but relieved I could just return it right there). Sounds like with this table it just depends on which one you receive.

I love this table. it's so much prettier than even the picture. It's very very heavy and well made. It was a cinch to put together, less than 20 minutes.

I read many negative reviews. But often times I seem to have a lucky horseshoe and get the good one. My table and the bench I also purchased indeed were fine. No cracks, nothing broken or disfigured. The only negative I would have to say about these items is others posted they did NOT feel the product had any type of protective coating on it. I would have to agree. When you run your hand on it. feels like bare wood. My son in law set a water on the table and it left a ring. I quickly was able to remove the watermark! I didn't want it to get ruined so I spent a few hours applying a matt poly clear coat to it all. I was a little bummed to have to work on something I had just purchased ,I should have been able to assemble and use. What most upset me was myself. When doing the table I wasn't perfect the polyurethane got tacky and gobbed a little towards the edge and now I will need to sand a spot I'm not happy with.It does change the color once a coating is applied. Turned out a bit brown instead of the smoke grey color I ordered. On the plus side. Its real wood and anytime I want something different. I can sand it down and have it become whatever I want. Then I have a new table again. Whether I choose a grey smoke stain like I originally wanted/ordered or perhaps a distressed finish. the possibilities are endless. I priced other real wood tables at many different places. And this was the cheapest. Got it on sale. Others I looked at ranged way higher $700-1000. So overall I am a happy camper

Real Wood Moves and Develops Cracks
I build furniture and cabinets as a hobby, and the fact that real hardwoods are not only expensive but the fibers expand contract seasonally based upon temperature and humidity levels is a deterent for most. While there are things we can do to account for this movement, it will occur. And, on this design, cracks can be noticed. Each of the 4X4 legs are attached with lag screws to the top, and the top of each leg sits flush with the table top. Cracks are most likely to develop at this joint as the table top and legs expand and contract separately over time. I glued and bolted these joints, so they wont loosen over time. And, any cracks that develop in the sides of the legs or on the tops, I’ll fill with a tinted epoxy and plane the epoxy dried flush a hand plane. This is a miniscule amount of work for what you are getting. This much Walnut (minus the sap wood) would cost more to purchase from a lumber yard without including the furniture maker’s fees, so this product is an absolute steal for this price! I love my table, but also do not mind filling cracks that develop ( or are not aready filled) with tinted epoxy or cutting-in decorative bow ties to prevent any cracks that develop after manufacturing and acclimating to warehouse storage and to my home evironment from spreading. I am also not above changing the design of the skirting and legs to account for any additional movement, but that could mean loosing the character of the farm house table design. Now, there is a lot of sap wood, but it is Walnut and it is solid. And, it is beautiful. The weatered oil finish works perfectly with the look.

Beautiful Table But . .
This table was a steal for the sale price we got it at. Upon opening it, the gray is beautiful. However, we quickly learned it is not sealed. I read the question section that said it is sealed and I do not believe that. We had a small stain set in quickly which should not happen if it was sealed. We’ve since sealed the table with a polyacrylic and it is no longer the weathered gray. It has more tan and brown colors. It is still beautiful but I knocked it down a star because no one should sell an unsealed table.

On my 3rd order of this item. Quality control did a horrible job inspecting these tables before shipping them out. First one was cracked, second table had a piece that was cut too short. Return and replawent policy is great but that isn't why I buy things.
