AnswerI've mounted mine without using the chain, but I did use the 12" long pipe & the ceiling plate that came with the unit. I wanted it to sit lower from the ceiling since it's above the dining room table.(See attached photos). If you don't want to use the pipe you'd have to use a very short piece of pipe or threaded connector (get a variety of pieces to see what would work out best for you before hanging it.

Love the pendant lights over my kitchen island. I purchased with the matching 5-bulb dining room fixture and I love the look of the pieces together. Installation of the pendants was easier than the 5-bulb fixture.

This 5-light iron-look fixture completely changes the look of my kitchen over the small work island. In addition it provides enough light to work at the island without needing the additional kitchen lights to be switched on. The assembly is complicated due to the number of pieces and the sequence must be followed precisely. The adjustable type suspension of the fixture provides placement closer to the work surface. The fixture style blends the vintage/rustic look of the island/bar space with the Mid Century Modern wood dining table in the adjacent dining room. I’ve chosen to use the clear glass lamps to give a more workable light to the area without any discoloration. I am pleased with the completed unit and the difference it makes in the appearance of my kitchen.

This light fixture has an all metal frame with the outside most frame painted to look like distressed wood. It looks okay but the faux wood finish could be a bit better looking. It can be hung using the included chain or depending on how low the ceiling is you can just use the included down rod & connect directly to the ceiling plate (you'd have to remove some of the threaded pieces that the chain would've hung on, but fairly easy to do so). After hanging you can then adjust the middle swivel frames out to make a good looking fixture. Fixture comes with the five vintage filament style bulbs.

Beautiful BUT make sure you understand this is NOT brushed nickel. It is “antique nickel”, so it has a gold/brown undertone to the metal parts.
The five light chandelier is a lot larger than the pictures make it look. Originally I planned to put this in my 9' foyer without really taking the listed measurements into account, but it is way too large and would have to hang too close to the ceiling. This looks much better in my dining room. The chandelier is shipped flat, so you have to spin the pieces out. It also comes with the bulbs, so no hunting down the right size and style bulbs. If you've installed lights before, this was another fairly easy install, except that this chandelier is pretty heavy. You'll need some help holding it up while you connect the wires and the screws. It fits in pretty well with our transitional-to-farmhouse style house.

Modern design with a classic touch...the wood accents blend well with the iron and the five light bulbs give it an aged look that the pics can't capture. Fit and finish is excellent, the lamp comes assembled and well packaged so the installation was a breeze. You don't need to be a handyman or expert to install it. I ordered this online and was a little concerned with the wood look, but was pleasantly surprised; it blends well with the furniture and great addition to the dining area. The one thing to note is that the bulbs give you the antique look, but they aren't as bright as regular bulbs, but I wouldn't have it any other way. Great look and great product!
