Can I till up my yard. Old sod

It depends on the size. It tilled up my garden that has not been tilled since at least 4 years, but it does need a bit of patience when it encounters resistance.

Can the depth be lowered to 3 or 4 inches by adjusting?

I don't want it to cut real deep into the ground.

Yes, depth control is set by you setting back stake and holding to your desired depth.

I was skeptical of purchasing this machine due to the fact that our entire backyard needed to be tilled for levelling and new sod, and the soil in our area is clay and rocks. This amazing little machine tilled to a depth of 6-8 inches without much effort on my part, other than trying to keep it under control while it churned the soil, and didn't want to stop. The slate and quartz rocks were no match for its outstanding tilling abilities, but did struggle a little if a tree root was encountered. Easy assembly, easy operation, maximum outcome!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Amazing I bought this little handy dandy tiller to do the garden that I paid someone to till for me last year. Since the area had already been a garden, I thought i was home free. I mowed the grass and put this baby to work. It does not dig into the ground at all it goes so fast forward that it kills your arms to keep it in place to try and till an area. Honestly I messed with it for an hour trying to get it to dig and it just does not have enough weight to it to do a good job. I read the reviews and made sure the ground was not too hard, the ground is nice and moist and now I have $200 piece of equipment that is useless! Save your money and buy a better tiller!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Easy set-up I received the tiller. It is a replacement for a gas tiller that I've had for years. The out-of-the-box setup was very easy and took less than thirty minutes and required no tools. I used it and was satisfied with the results. In comparison with my gas tiller, this unit is much easier to maneuver. The unit does overheat and at one point during the project I saw smoke. The unit will shut itself off and can be easily restarted once it is cooled. For the money, it's a decent deal.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Beware of what you really want This product is likely not what you are looking for if you have anything other than already prepared garden beds and looking to mix it up a bit. Overheats within a few minutes of doing this task, never mind something a bit heavier. This is NOT a small rototiller. Do NOT expect be able to use it to break up ground. Using it for our small garden beds and it is OK.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Powerful and Durable - Best in it's class The first thing to do is compare this to the Yard Machine electric cultivator. The Homelite has more power and a better warranty. The Homelite also cuts deeper. Assembly was fast and easy with no tools required. I first tried this cultivator on dry hard ground. All it did was bounce and shave the grass a bit. Then I actually followed the directions ( cultivate when ground is damp, a while after a rain) Now I was getting somewhere. It works just fine AFTER you get to know how to use it. Here are a few tips : Remove the wheels that come with it. This unit works much like a floor polisher and you can move it side to side by leaning and tilting it a bit. You can of course use it forward and backward. I utlized both methods. Backwards is where it seems to do it's best work. After using it like this a while, my hands and arms turned to rubber from being so fatigued. Sooo.... I went to a music store and bought a guitar strap for $4.00. Attach the strap to the handle using a pair of nylon wire ties on each side. Sling the guitar strap over ONE shoulder just like you would if your were playing a guitar. This very effectively takes the load off of your arms and hands! It takes a while to get the strap adjusted to the right length. If you are using this unit on a grass lawn, get your lawn mower out and cut the grass as low as you can before tilling. I used the cultivator for about an hour, non stop. It ran beautifully, never stalled, never over heated. I also cross cultivated the dirt (Went one direction then perpendicular) to get a better dirt consistancy. Your 2 year warranty info is buried inside the manual so be sure to look for it. Write the date of purchase on the front cover of the manual for easy future referance. Also, you may want to write the date on the cultivator itself. Over all this is a pretty well built unit with plenty of torque and I would buy it again if I had to.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from It has a lot of power and dug the dirt so well. I only found one thing that was a problem. The bottom screw that keeps the motor on top of the tiller tends to loosen which makes the handlebars crooked. I have to stop and tighten it often. This can be an improvement on the machine for the engineers.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This thing is KILLER! I just tried this little workhorse on our garden and it is incredible! The secret to using this thing is all in the user and im not sure why this thing has any bad reviews unless the people don't know what they are doing. Like another reviewer said, set the stake correctly and then if you really wanna hit that 8-10 inch deep mark you should pull it slowly towards you while rocking it and letting it really dig in. I practically made ditches in my garden using it this way! Excellent product IF used correctly and still really good even just using it normally with no technique!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great little tiller! I bought this electric cultivator about mid summer this year and finally got around to using it after this years garden season was over. I have a small garden area where i grow Peppers, Tomato's etc. This little guy is a real gem for an established garden even in heavy clay soil. It digs right down 8-10 inches IF you read the directions and set the drag stake correctly. However it does not have the weight or power to replace an actual roto-tiller but that is not what it is designed for. It is great for small garden area's less than 200 square ft like mine though. i suspect the negative comments left by others are due to the fact that many folks dont take the time to actualy read the reccomended usage of the product. HAPPY GARDENING!
