Questions & Answers

Besides an electrical cord, do I need a little plug to go along with the electrical plug? Or just an electrical plug ?

Asked by: Jackie
This takes a regular electrical cord. Just make certain to use the proper gauge cord, depending on length. It explains that in the instruction manual. A grounded cord (three pronged) cord can be used, the trimmer just doesn't have a ground.

I want to trim the top of the moss ground cover that is planted between the bluestone pieces that make up my patio. The moss is now blooming and has grown taller than the top of the bluestone and I want it to be flush again. Is this trimmer able to trim something all the way to ground level?
Asked by: LaurieJaye
I personally feel this would not be a good idea. You probably would not have the control you need for a delicate job like that. I would suggest using some sort of hand trimmer to avoid accidental damage to the moss.

What if it just stop working. How or what should I check .

Asked by: Tony
You may already have done these steps, but if not here goes. Check that your electric cord plug has not come loose. That is a problem I have. I usually hold part of the cord in my hand so that I don't put pressure on it and dislodge the cord. If that's not the problem, has your string spool run out? If you have a full string spool, then I would take it to the store for repair.

How do i start this machine?

Please tell me how to start this machine.
Asked by: CantStartTheMachine
Hi CantStartTheMachine, Following all safety precautions listed in your manual connect the proper extension cord and squeeze the trigger and the tool should start. Thanks for asking. Greg

When HD opens in the morning I will be on my way to buy another one of these trimmers. My last Homelite 13 in. 4 Amp Straight Electric String Trimmer just broke after I think something like 15 years and maybe more!!!! I do not remember exactly how long but it has been a long, long time. The thing is still working but I wore out the device that holds the spool in by grinding it on concrete. It will cost me around 10 bucks to replace the part or I can buy another new trimmer for 29 bucks....so go figure. Some people complain about the auto string advance.... but I love it. In order to take advantage of it just keep the trigger pulled as long as you can because when you stop it and restart it ....it automatically feeds out more line. So by starting and stopping the trimmer you will feed out extra string when it does not need to fed out. The auto feed works great you just have to know how to use it ......it will save you time and money and above all it improves on a safety issue! I got my moneys worth by buying this product from HD!!!!

We moved to a smaller place and the old Weed Eater gas trimmer finally had to be retired. We purchased a BD corded trimmer for around $50.00 in late 2013. When it failed in early 2014 we were short of options and then came across this Homelite corded trimmer. The price was extremely low and I thought if it fails we will take it back to Home Depot. That was three years ago and it is still going strong. The line feed defies logic and still works on average. When it doesn't you simply flip it over and pres the feed button on the side of the spool. I bought a 3 pack of pre-loaded spools and a 400' pack of .065 line and have been refilling ever since. Don't let the price fool you into thinking it is sub par. It is an excellent string trimmer for light to medium duty work. No gas, no batteries to charge or replace this little trimmer does a admirable job at a great price.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from difficult to decide if I would recommend this or not. It is cheap and feels like it, but it works... difficult to decide if I would recommend this or not. It is cheap and feels like it, but it works for light duty and good for most homeowners. It actually rotates well to edge allow patios and walkways. My issues are the automatic feed loves to use up line and the plug disconnects too easily. As for the auto feed........if you release and then pull the trigger it releases more line. This makes getting thru a basic yard without having to reload difficult. You must keep the trimmer running (keep trigger depressed) to avoid wasting line. Personally I would like to have a bit more control on the feed, but at least now I realize this so maybe with practice I will not have to re-string so often. The plug issue is just aggravating (yes, I do loop the cord appropriately). Again, it is cheap so weigh the cons against how much you wish to spend on a trimmer.

After 7 years of dutiful service from my previous Homelite Electric trimmer, it finally died. And heaven knows I put that thing through the gamut, well beyond it's generally specified use. After reading reviews for the newer model, I was hesitant to get it and nearly paid the $20 extra for the Black & Decker until I saw reviews and photos of the electrical plug melting on that one. I'm glad I had faith in what I already know and chose this one. After using this model for 2 days straight, the unit is an absolute work horse of a bargain with tons of new features and seemingly more power that makes the job so much easier. I'm loving the auto line feed as my previous model required stopping to flip it over to use a manual button on the spool shaft to advance, which frequently wasted line. I also love that it came ready to use with minimal assembly and a spool of .065 line already on it. I don't care what anyone else has to say...... .065 line works just fine for even the toughest job. After 7 years of having to spool my own line, I certainly don't mind respooling when the string lasts this long! I also love that you can just buy a new already strung spool to pop in it if you're in a hurry, but I'm a frugal girl who never minds spooling my own string and have a ton of it already on hand. I was able to weed eat and edge my entire large front yard and use the thing as a BUSH HOG to knock down overgrown marsh grass at the back of my property before needing to replace the line on a reasonably small spool. This model has the power to knock down thick stemmed stuff and dig down to cut tuberous growth or thatch at it's source without burning up the string IF you know how to use it right. It is super light weight which increases the length of time I can use it and due to the quick auto line advance and power, I was able to accomplish much more in less time with a lot less waste of string. Highly recommend! I think the folks who have left less than stellar reviews might not know how to correctly operate their power tools or a good weed eater. Operation tips: Go low from the sides of larger overgrowth to knock down so the overgrowth isn't just spun around and avoid any hidden moss. Know how to approach and retreat for optimal knock down. To avoid wasting string, hold the trigger unless you want to advance. The only time my new unit got hung up or was less than efficient was if if I tried to go top down on big stuff or encountered some hidden moss that the marsh grass had engulfed. It even went around hidden tree limbs and twigs easily while still eliminating the under growth so I could remove the debris before coming back with the mower.

I read reviews of trimmers offered by Home Depot and other suppliers before I chose the Homelite brand. I was concerned that auto-feed trimmers waste line. This is not a problem with the Homelite product. It feeds only what is needed.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Buy a different trimmer or waste your time with this one Variable angle cutting head is nice. Variable length is nice too. Spool is difficult to rewind and to load. Spool is very unreliable or inconsistent at auto feeding which wastes far too much time although that may also be a function of the string I used. When it would feed the string went FAST, then I had to rewind the pita double spool. This machine spins faster than a previous other BranD trimmer I had. However I never had any loading or feeding problems with that one. Additionally the wire guard on that one was actually useful as a string guide, unlike on this model which I only used once after the So-called guide led me to make a trenching my grass two inches from the edge. Ugh. The one and only sole reason I have this trimmer 18 months later instead of returning it is because I lost the receipt. And I don't want to spend the money on another brand just yet. It does the job but it has its serious shortcomings. If I used it more often i would replace it.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from We have a house on a small suburban lot and... We have a house on a small suburban lot and use a lawn service during the growing season. In the winter we get some cold season weeds that sprout up in a few places. It isn't worth calling the lawn service (which doesn't usually operate in winter). So I bought this light weight trimmer to knock down those winter weeds. This trimmer is just right for occasional light use. I don't think It would stand up to very heavy usage. It's just right for me. I especially like that it feeds more line only when the power switch is turned on. That lets me control exactly when I need more line.
