Does the string come with the Weed Eater when you buy it?
Asked by: Alan
Yes, but if you repeatedly turn it off and on when you trim, I would recommend you buy more line when you get the trimmer. The line is not expensive and the spool is fairly easy to re-string (two strings).

I don't understand how the auto feed works! Also is there a way to feed it manually without taking it apart?
Asked by: Dan
The auto feed works when you squeeze the trigger it will feed a 1/4 to 1/2 inch line. There is a manual feed button on the top of the spool around the top rim. pull the line and push and release the button at the same time. Hope this helps. Greg

does it take 3prong or 2prong
Asked by: chris
Thank you for asking, Chris. This tool has a polarized plug (one blade is wider than the other) and will require the use of a two prong, polarized extension cord. I hope this helps and we appreciate your interest in Homelite! -Keri

The initial string for trimming was the only one that actually fed according to the manufacturer design. If you enjoy rewinding line and untangling string every foot or so of your yard edge this is your product. If you actually expect an entire spool to work flawlessly, well that's not going to happen. I bought it at the end of the fall season and found this spring that buying this product was a tremendous disappointment. If I were Home Depot I would dump this brand and find one worth selling to your customers. For $30 you get a single use trimmer good for about 120' of yard edge.

I cheaped out because my SECOND Black & Decker burned up a motor in under 5 years, and I opted not to spend more this time if the product wasn't going to last in the first place. This is my second weekend using it. The first time I figured I'd live with the problems. Today, I'm about to give it away. * Does NOT advance line adequately. YES, I've read how it's supposed to work. You let go of the 'on' button and the line will advance a little bit. You actually have to let the spinning head slow almost to a stop for the clutch mechanism to disengage and feed line (you can hear it click) - and then, only a 1/4 inch at a time. It breaks line in longer lengths than that, so to get line back to adequate length, it's on-off-on-off-on-off-on-off until you get enough line - and each 'off' isn't merely a pause, it's a wait for the RPM to slow enough for the feed to happen. Also, doesn't feed line so well in upright edging position, which is how I use it the most. * Because of the line feed problems, you'll end up using the manual feed button often. Unplug, turn trimmer upside down, fiddle with button and line, return to position, plug cord in again. The constant interruptions to actually using the tool for its purpose means your trimming job takes 4 or 5 times as long as it should. * The ultra-cheap lower handle and its fastening mechanism makes the trimmer feel flimsy and the unit as a whole doesn't feel well-balanced in the hands. * Dual-line head: I've owned a trimmer with this feature before and I don't prefer it to single line heads. Instead of cutting twice as much or twice as fast, it basically results in eating up line twice as fast (which, with the line feed problems, exacerbates the frustration). At least this one doesn't foul line (so far) in edging mode the way my other dual-line one often did. Bottom line, don't bother.

When HD opens in the morning I will be on my way to buy another one of these trimmers. My last Homelite 13 in. 4 Amp Straight Electric String Trimmer just broke after I think something like 15 years and maybe more!!!! I do not remember exactly how long but it has been a long, long time. The thing is still working but I wore out the device that holds the spool in by grinding it on concrete. It will cost me around 10 bucks to replace the part or I can buy another new trimmer for 29 bucks....so go figure. Some people complain about the auto string advance.... but I love it. In order to take advantage of it just keep the trigger pulled as long as you can because when you stop it and restart it ....it automatically feeds out more line. So by starting and stopping the trimmer you will feed out extra string when it does not need to fed out. The auto feed works great you just have to know how to use it ......it will save you time and money and above all it improves on a safety issue! I got my moneys worth by buying this product from HD!!!!

The price was right at Home Depot, only $29.97. I previously bought a Homelite hedge trimmer that worked out well, so I dedided to give the weed trimmer a try. Assembly was easy, just attach the shield and handle and you're ready to go. My yard was full of weeds after a very dry winter. The Homelite cut thru the weeds with no problems, the motor is plenty powerful. I was leery of the automatic string feed feature, but it worked perfectly. Never had to pull the strings or fiddle with them at all. Highly recommend this unit to anyone with a small yard but can't justify the cost of a gas trimmer or a more expensive unit. Great job Homelite!

We moved to a smaller place and the old Weed Eater gas trimmer finally had to be retired. We purchased a BD corded trimmer for around $50.00 in late 2013. When it failed in early 2014 we were short of options and then came across this Homelite corded trimmer. The price was extremely low and I thought if it fails we will take it back to Home Depot. That was three years ago and it is still going strong. The line feed defies logic and still works on average. When it doesn't you simply flip it over and pres the feed button on the side of the spool. I bought a 3 pack of pre-loaded spools and a 400' pack of .065 line and have been refilling ever since. Don't let the price fool you into thinking it is sub par. It is an excellent string trimmer for light to medium duty work. No gas, no batteries to charge or replace this little trimmer does a admirable job at a great price.

It's just a useless product. It's almost impossible to rewind the double string spool. And the "auto" feed mechanism doesn't work half the time, even though I keep it properly lubed with silicone spray. Give me an old fashioned single line "bump" feed any day. I wish I'd returned it immediately.

Because you'll hardly spend any time trimming. Here's how a typical session will go: Trim for 30 seconds and the line disappears. Waste time unplugging and disassembling spool housing to adjust line. Trim for 30 more seconds. Now, too much line is coming out. Waste time unplugging and disassembling spool housing to adjust line. Keep repeating this annoying procedure until the real fun starts: Now, WAY too much line is coming out at random. It gets tangled inside machine and stops all operation. Waste time unplugging and disassembling spool housing to try to pry line out of assembly. You'll need a mat knife. Then, it escalates to where the extra line starts ripping apart the plastic that prevents line from tangling inside machine! When this happens you're done. Nothing left to do but sit back and contemplate tar and feathering the guy who came up with this moronic string method in the first place.

Unable to cut any thing with it. And if you rotate the head for edging, it doesn't even reach the grass. After multiple manual attempts to manually advance the spool head I gave up. Returned.
