Questions & Answers

Is this a Good saw for a beginner who’s never used a saw before but needs to?

I have some branches I need to cut to fit into my waste container for pick up. Is this an appropriate tool for a newb for this job?
Asked by: Rachel
As a general answer, I'd say no, according to your specific need. If your need is only to cut or reduce branches of 4" diameter and smaller, a lopper-type chainsaw is a MUCH better option. It's likely that your refuse collection service limits size to less than that, anyway. They are infinitely safer and easier to use, and require significantly less learning. No chainsaw is safe to use by inexperienced users, and no safety features eliminate the risks. It takes training and experience, lots of both. If your need is no more than what you state, a full-fledged chain saw of any design is the wrong tool.

Does this start up immediately at full speed, or can one start it slowly and then increase the speed as in a gas saw?

Asked by: LeeB2
A gas powered chainsaw should not be used to saw wood at less than full throttle. EVERY gas chainsaw manufacturer will tell you this. Less than full throttle puts extra strain on the internal parts and will cause early failure of the engine. An electric saw must run at full RPM for the same reason. Lower speed operation would cause the motor to overheat and burn out. The voice of experience is speaking, are you listening?

Auto Oiler

In Home Depots description it does NOT mention whether or not the Oil is Automatic - I assume yes, but we all know about assumptions.
Asked by: LarryW
Yes it is automatic.

Customer Reviews

14 in. 9 Amp Electric Chainsaw is rated 4.3 out of 5 by 1214.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Impressive After reviewing most of the electric chainsaws out there, I decided on the 14" Homelite. After reading the manual, checking the chain tension, filled it with oil and went to work cutting 4" to 9" limbs which had come down in a recent storm. After two and half hours of cutting I was convinced that this saw was a good decision. I'm sure it will cut larger than the 9" inch diameter that I was cutting. The key is to let the saw do the work. Even after all this cutting, the chain tension was fine. Clean-up was easy. I was using a 100' 14/3 extension cord and it worked fine. Some of the reviewers of other brands of saws were complaining that they couldn't get parts. This comes with a complete parts list with part numbers and can be serviced by any Homelite dealer. Durability is yet to be seen, but based on what I've experienced, I'm not worried. I really don't understand some of the low reviews on this saw, unless people got a bad unit for some reason, in which case they could have exchanged it.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from A perfect tool for tree maintenance I'm a city guy. I had never used a chain saw in my life --- I'm 61 --- but one of my large fir trees lost several large branches and had to be chopped and removed. This was the perfect chainsaw for that. The directions treat you like you don't know anything, and I didn't, so that was a plus. Read the directions and follow them. I took the saw out of the box, read the directions, and was cutting like a pro in fifteen minutes. I am left-handed, and the saw is designed for right-handers. Gee, I feel discriminated against! Who should I sue?! Pop! Okay, my head is out of my posterior and I can resume reviewing! Anyway, I could operate this even being left-handed. One tip: buy the bar oil by the gallon, you'll need it. I had to refill twice for a relatively small job. That's just a fact, not a complaint. Two tip: don't try to muscle it through the job. Let the weight of the saw do the work. Be careful and don't be in a hurry and you'll do just fine with this saw, which is a terrific value and perfect for your yard work.

I'm a 62 year old woman who is used to using lighter weight blowers, battery powered trimmers, and so on, but I have always been really a chicken to be around an electric chainsaw. Since I am very active caring for my extensive landscaping of bushes, trees, and plants, I don't hire out help except on rare occasions and then it is difficult to get someone. With so many small jobs popping up, I would kill myself with a handsaw, paying the price for days with my neck and upper shoulders. This way if I have a quick job I do it myself and it is done and I can move on. This paid for itself with just one job that I would need to hire out. I just love it and wish I had gotten one sooner. The safety features put me at ease, it is lightweight, and caring for it is so easy...just keep it clean and oil in it. It has worked for any job I have given it that included up to 4 inch diameter branches, it just takes time, but a nice clean cut.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Value I'm a 50-something female who has never used a chainsaw, but needed something to trim some of the pieces of wood delivered recently - they were too big for my wood stove. I read many of the reviews, then read the manual carefully, and treated this chainsaw with the respect that any power tool deserves. Well, it was easy to handle, not too heavy, and when following the directions it cut through large pieces of seasoned hardwood easily. The chain never came off. After each use, I cleaned the entire saw, wiped the blade carefully and replaced the chain cover. A few drops of oil leaked during use - from the base of the chain - but after thorough cleaning [meaning, all the nooks and crannies where chips and sawdust collect], it stopped. Like anything else, if treated properly, it will do the job it's supposed to do. I'm very satisfied with this tool.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very economical and functional chain saw I bought this chain saw after reading the reviews. A storm had knocked down a 40 year old tree, probably an ash, into my back yard. I was going to rent a chain saw (for $50) when a neighbor said that electric chain saws work very well. I was surprised at the Home Depot price for this saw and the positive reviews, so I bought it. I used it for about 4 hours cutting all the limbs, branches, and the trunk and then bucking them. After I used it for about 20 minutes, the blade jammed a little and the chain came part way off the bar. I easily took it partway apart and re-installed the chain. After that I made sure I check the chain after each cut and adjusted the tension if required. I didn't have another problem after that and so I was able to cut down and buck the entire tree. The largest cuts were about 13 inches and the saw had no problem cutting through them. I was using three 16 gauge extension cords (125 feet total) with no problem. If you have a really big job, you probably would be better off with a larger saw, but this works fine for trees up to at least 15 inches in diameter and maybe larger (the manual says up to 24 inches) if you work your way around the cut.

With that being said, I feel like this chain saw had great power! It did exactly what I needed it to. However, I used it twice and heavily might I add....I took down a few baby trees and large branches in my yard, but now my blade is dull. A sharpener was recommended by a home depot professional but the sharpener is about the same price as the saw itself....I wish there was a cheaper way to get it sharpened back up. That's my only con. Also buy a three prong extension cord and bar chain oil if you're going to get this. I wish I would've known that in advance it would've prevented me from taking two separate trips. Happy sawing!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Just what I needed Pretty impressive - blizzard (New York February 2013) took down several very large limbs from the trees around my house. Diameter varied from 2 inches to about 12 or so. Originally I was considering having someone come in and cut everything up. I saw this $50 dollar chain-saw and thought -why not give it a try. Bought it, brought it home, read the directions (I’d never used one before - city boy moves to the country). In 10 minutes I was outside cutting everything up - no problem at all. Chain came off the track once and was easy to put on (it spooked me when it happened, but it was easy to sort out). Be sure to buy Bar oil - it doesn't come with any. I was very surprised at how well it worked and how easily it went through some of the larger sections of tree.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Sturdy little power house saw This saw was purchased to replace a different brand/model 14" electric chain saw that I purchased several years ago. I need a saw to cut down those awful scrub trees that keep randomly pop up in my yard and to also use as needed to maintain my yard. I wanted an electric saw because I didn't want to deal with maintenance on a gasoline saw. This saw is far superior, in every way, to the one I replaced. It is sturdy, well made, light weight and extremely easy to use. A couple of my favorite features are the Automatic oiler that keeps chain lubricated and the tool free chain tensioner. Both of these features were huge to me because on my previous electric chain saw I had to manually pump a knob type button to keep the bar/chain lubricated and to adjust the tension on the chain I had to pull out some tools to do so. I am totally impressed and completely happy with this unit and would recommend it to anyone looking for this type chain saw.
