Surprised it worked at all. Mine did not work. It is poor design on the Washing machine side.

Upside down, right side up, vertical, horizontal. It doesn't matter. The arrestor will work regardless of the orientation.
The arrestor is designed to reduce the pipe banging noise caused by quick closing valves, so I don't think you have deficient units. Mine reduced the shock, but there is still a bit of hammer where I couldn't access and securely fasten several of the existing pipes.
