Is there any throttle control on this mower or is it always determined by the mower

My old mower has a throttle control for engine speed so it can be idled down when not actively cutting; does the throttle get controlled by this in some way? I assumed the thumb paddles are only for the transmission, and thought maybe it was linked so it throttled up when the drive was engaged, but the responses from a question about using it without the Smart Drive negated that. Is the engine always running at full cutting speed whenever it's started?
Asked by: Nick
The engine is a "throttle free" design. It always runs at one operating speed only.

Does this lawn mower's gas tank hold one full gallon or one full quart?

Someone asked this question earlier and most respondents said that it holds one gallon. My sense is that it holds far less than a full gallon of gas.
Asked by: Randy
1 Quart

Do you have to use self propelled feature or can use it as a standard push mower without the self propelled feature?

I have a pretty flat yard and enjoy the exercise without using the self propelled feature, but my wife will probably use the self propelled feature. Will the wheels "lock up" if the self propelled is not engaged?
Asked by: Tennessee
Sure. And as an added bonus all those features you will not be using make the mower heavy for even more exercise.

The first one was purchased years ago and it was flawless. Then my second one, same model as this one, was great for the first four years and then it became very hard to pull backwards. Over the years, I have spent each spring season working on fixing the the backward pull issue. This month I spent over 10 hours working on the problem. I took the whole transmission and drive assembly out from the unit and using wet and dry sand paper, I smoothed to a silk like finish the drive shaft rod. I succeeded in getting it to pull backwards with little effort. But by now I was burnt out from working on this thing. So I decided after nine years, and five years with dealing with this issue, it was time to sell it and get a new one. So I purchased a new one this past Friday and brought it home. Only as my wife and I carefully lifted it out of the box, I told her, "not one drop of oil or gas or first start until I see how it pulls backwards." Too my surprise it was harder to pull back then the one I had been dealing with and just fixed. Brand new.! Indeed, on my garage concrete floor, it almost dragged pulling backwards. I told my wife, "not again." And we wiped the tires clean, and put it back in the box and returned it. From the reviews on this site, some new owners are also observing this problem A problem well documented on the Internet and YouTube. The mower is great otherwise, and Home Depot took it back without a blink. [Of course we had it packaged and new like as we originally purchased it.] Too bad, as this is the mower I would like to buy but will not purchase again until they get this fixed.

The last Lawn Boy I purchased was 4 years ago and since the day I bought it I wish I hadn't. I suffered through non-restarts, sputtering, and overall lackluster performance. I decided it was time to move up to a Honda. I am a very picky homeowner and I am so happy with this mower. Starts right up every time and makes the yard look great!. It was end of season so a lot of leaves at every mowing. It vacuumed them up with no problem at all. This mower is totally worth the money. Spend a little extra and and you won't be disappointed.

I'm shocked this mower has such good reviews, even the Honda dealer said it's not a good choice. Works only on dry level lawn, no traction on inclines or damp grass. Worst problem is that it is very hard to pull backwards, the transmission doesn't truly disengage causing great effort to pull this 90 pound mower backwards. Also, without the bag the rear flap traps the grass inside, clogging it up. I attached a wire to hold the rear discharge door open. When the wheels are all adjusted to the same height, one doesn't even touch the ground! One of the worst things I ever bought in my life.

To start with I am retired now and wanted a mower that would be dependable and maintenance free as possible. You might say I left the best for last. I looked on consumer reports for picking a mower that would best meet my needs and also get the highest rank in their research. I purchased from home using my Home Depot account. That went flawlessly. A large box was at customer service with my name on it when I got to the store. They loaded it and off I went. Set-up was very easy. No choking was great. No more priming is time saving and saves a bit of bending for us old guys. This was the easiest starting motor that I've ever owned. I've owned alot.. Troy Built, Craftsman, Lawn Boy, John Deere, etc. By far the easiest. First pull right out of the box. Setting cutting height was simple. Had to re-do a couple of times as I have this mower to get areas that my rider can't get to so it needs to be same height. Mower is alitlle loud but I wear hearing protection and would highly recommend it. I'm mowing nearly 1 1/2 acre so it's a bit of walking to get first to one corner, then around a shrub, then in and around swing set, etc. The mower can move at a brisk walk and pulls nicely even with a full bag going uphill. When done I just used a soft brush and my air compresser set real low. Cut is smooth and even. Bagger picks up very good. No bad vibration like some of the other brands. Just start, walk behind, and empty bag as required from now on. I will follow manufacturers guideline for maintenance. I have mowed 4 times so far and I think I made the right choice.

This is a great mower and I have put it through a lot and it cuts very nice. My only dislikes are it doesn't have a side discharge option and the tires go bald very quick. Other than that, its a Honda mower, it speaks for itself! I would get one again or maybe get the Honda mower with a side discharge.

I cannot keep up with high speed – it is that fast. Had it 6 months – always starts within two pulls, restarts quickly. I like having the “accelerator” on both thumbs, so I can push one or the other, should I be turning or using it one armed. The setup was – TAKE IT OUT OF THE BOX AND PUT THE HANDLE UP! - That’s it! So far, so good.

I have cut the grass now three weeks and the differences from using this machine are noticeable. First, it was easy to start. Out of the box, I added the oil that was provided, then I added non-ethanol gasoline. On the first pull the motor started right up. It was not a hard pull either. Next, I pushed slightly on the speed lever with my thumb and the mower moved forward. The main reason we bought this mower was because of the moving assist feature. This allows me to basically walk behind the mower that pulls itself across our yard. Now, mowing the yard is so much easier to do. Another feature I like is the double blade. Not only is my grass cut, it is mulched and left laying to provide better protection of the turf. Also, you can see the difference in my lawn. This mower definitely meets and exceeds my expectations.

I did a lot of research and ended up going with this mower over cheaper ones. I put the included oil in the engine, gas, and it started first pull. I live a busy life and don't have time to deal with a mower that may break down. Package says it's assembled in the USA with foreign components. Highly recommend.
