Questions & Answers

Can i keep the engine running if i walk away from it, to drink water ? Or do i have re start it again?

Is there any throttle control on this mower or is it always determined by the mower

My old mower has a throttle control for engine speed so it can be idled down when not actively cutting; does the throttle get controlled by this in some way? I assumed the thumb paddles are only for the transmission, and thought maybe it was linked so it throttled up when the drive was engaged, but the responses from a question about using it without the Smart Drive negated that. Is the engine always running at full cutting speed whenever it's started?
Asked by: Nick
The engine is a "throttle free" design. It always runs at one operating speed only.

Does this lawn mower's gas tank hold one full gallon or one full quart?

Someone asked this question earlier and most respondents said that it holds one gallon. My sense is that it holds far less than a full gallon of gas.
Asked by: Randy
Only holds about a litre of gas, which is plenty, as it's very gas efficient.

Do you have to use self propelled feature or can use it as a standard push mower without the self propelled feature?

I have a pretty flat yard and enjoy the exercise without using the self propelled feature, but my wife will probably use the self propelled feature. Will the wheels "lock up" if the self propelled is not engaged?
Asked by: Tennessee
Sure. And as an added bonus all those features you will not be using make the mower heavy for even more exercise.

I have to admit, the Honda name alone was enough to get this model when I needed a new mower, but I still did some research on my own. Along with all the excellent reviews I found, the final decision was made when I asked my local mower repair man, "which mower comes in here the least," and he quickly answered, "the Honda mowers." I was extremely happy with this mower, Right out of the box, raised the handle and secured it, poured in the oil from the provided container, put some gas in the tank, and it fired right off on the FIRST pull. The dual blades breeze through the grass and the variable speed self-propelled system makes it a breeze to handle.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Quality Im a fleet manager at a profesional landscape company where we have roughly 30 crews. We do it all and have just about tried it all. We switched to this mower about two years ago and have never looked back. The only issue weve ever had is keeping the grass out of the rear drive wheels, which just takes removing the wheels and blowing out the gears to solve. I was so impressed with the durability and dependability that I purchased one for myself.

However, this year on mowing number two, the string won't recoil. The pull cord spring is excluded from the warranty due to "normal wear and tear". Well, I don't believe most mowers can't perform their functions at two years old. The junction looks like the plastic part broke off. This is unreal.

I brought it home, put it together and only 3 of the 4 wheels touched the ground. Went back to Home Depot where the manager had to open THREE more boxes to find one where all wheels were level. In reading the reviews, this has been an issue since at least 2013 and Honda is still putting them out there. I guess quality control at Honda is understaffed if they have had this issue for 5 years and are not correcting on ALL their mowers. Per the reviews, the $499 Honda mower has the same issue. Robert at Honda write-in the Q&A that it's an easy fix: put the mower back in the box and return for another one. That's time consuming and needless effort. C'mon Honda: five years?

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Day 1 Needed a new mower badly. After a few weeks of research, strolling through reviews, I I narrowed it down to the Honda three in one variable speed gas walk behind. Picked it up brought it home put the supplier oil and put fresh gas in it, one pull and away she went! Assembly is crazy easy, load the bag around the frame slide the bag on, straighten the handlebar (it locks in instantly, so easy), adjust the thumb control and youre good to go. This is my first Honda and so far I’m extremely impressed. You had and storming here a couple of days and there was finally a slight break to mow my grass which was about 6inches at this point. This baby ploooowed through it like it was nothing. I will say I’m used to a front wheel drive with a high back wheel so getting used to the rear wheel drive and all four wheels being the same size will take maybe about two more cuts to get used to. Oh and if you’re wondering if the two twin blade thing is legit? It really is. The thing mulched like you wouldnt believe. So far so good.

It was easy to assemble and started right up. I've put it to the test with some very thick and long grass, and the engine had no trouble pushing through it. I'm loving the new features to me, including the bagging option and self-propel. The mulching also works great, likely due to those dual blades. It does feel like a considerably bigger and heavier mower than what I had before, but thankfully the self-propel equalizes that weight and then makes it easier to push. I definitely spent up for this, and so far I have no regrets. Only time will tell, and I'm sure hoping this mower will be going strong a decade from now. One thing to note: you're supposed to drain and refill the oil after only the first five mowings.

Is the base cast iron!??! For me an older single woman that is not a power lifter it probably was not the right choice. The paddles that control the self propelled feature even made my thumbs sore! That's minor and probably fixable by moving the paddles to a more natural position but having to position the mower to get into odd spots--which I have lots of--was difficult. Other than that, I am sure its a good mower but I would not buy it again.

The first one was purchased years ago and it was flawless. Then my second one, same model as this one, was great for the first four years and then it became very hard to pull backwards. Over the years, I have spent each spring season working on fixing the the backward pull issue. This month I spent over 10 hours working on the problem. I took the whole transmission and drive assembly out from the unit and using wet and dry sand paper, I smoothed to a silk like finish the drive shaft rod. I succeeded in getting it to pull backwards with little effort. But by now I was burnt out from working on this thing. So I decided after nine years, and five years with dealing with this issue, it was time to sell it and get a new one. So I purchased a new one this past Friday and brought it home. Only as my wife and I carefully lifted it out of the box, I told her, "not one drop of oil or gas or first start until I see how it pulls backwards." Too my surprise it was harder to pull back then the one I had been dealing with and just fixed. Brand new.! Indeed, on my garage concrete floor, it almost dragged pulling backwards. I told my wife, "not again." And we wiped the tires clean, and put it back in the box and returned it. From the reviews on this site, some new owners are also observing this problem A problem well documented on the Internet and YouTube. The mower is great otherwise, and Home Depot took it back without a blink. [Of course we had it packaged and new like as we originally purchased it.] Too bad, as this is the mower I would like to buy but will not purchase again until they get this fixed.
