Great Back Up Mower To The HRX217
I use my HRN216 to get my yard in great shap. I have a HRX217 so this one is for back up. The mower has more power than I will ever need. It is a joy to let it rip and do what it was engineered to do. Yard work is a easy way to go with it.

Thing is a beast compared to the lawn boy mower it replaced and is more powerful and a lot quiter too and started right up on 1st pull out of the box. It was very easy to set up, just take it out of the box un fold the handle and add the oil and gas and your ready to go. The smart drive did take a little getting used to get the right pace for me but got the hang of it with in minutes. Only thing I wish it had was bigger tires on the back like the lawn boy it replaced but over all very happy with the purchase of my 1st Honda mower.

This mower is a BEAST! Now I know why my friends have always recommended Honda mowers to me in the past. This machine is powerful, yet quiet (or at least a lot quieter than my previous mowers) and when the Blade Stop is on, it is extremely quiet. The Blade Stop system is great; it allows the mower to stay on without the blades moving, so you can use the self propelling feature to easily move from one area to another with out mishap due to the blades spinning. It made short work of my lawn in no time flat, with no left behind grass piles to deal with; the mower is extremely efficient at getting up the grass trimmings and leaves. The dual blade system chops the grass clippings into a fine mulch, so if you decide to use the mower in mulch mode (instead of bagging) it will provide you with good mulch. Simple to use, even the initial set up and operation were extremely easy: fill with oil, add gas, turn on gas supply valve, set throttle speed, and pull starter rope and go; in fact it started every time on the first pull. The self propelling feature take all the strain out of pushing the mower through heavy and thick grass and makes it easy to operate for anyone, regardless of your strength (unlike my old mower). Speed is controlled by a butterfly throttle on the handle that fits your palms very easily; you can go from a slow pace to almost a fast walk/slow run and adjusting the physical position of this throttle is extremely easy. The mower is maneuverable enough that you don't need to use the self propelling feature, and it has a surprising tight turning radius for its size. You can either use it as a mulching or bagging mower; switching between “mulch” and “bag collection” is as easy as moving a handle and putting the bag on. Everything about this mower screams customer experience and satisfaction were taken into account during its engineering. Honda provides a three year limited warranty on the mower, but with proper maintenance and use I can see this lasting for many, many years. Regardless of the size of the area you have to mow, this Honda lawn mower will be well worth the money; it can even be used to pick up and bag leaves, a chore I have always hated, until now. Highly recommended mower!

I had previously owned the Honda 21in 3-in-1 variable speed gas walk behind self propelled lawn mower Model # HRR216VKA and thought that Honda had knocked it out of the park and could not create a better mower. But I was wrong because this new model is amazing. The mower has really impressed me in about every possible way. The mower seems incredibly light but still very well built and super easy to move and turn. The back wheels are the self propelled wheels but the mower is super easy to move back and forward without the normal binding up or struggle you encounter when pulling a self propelled mower backward. The mower itself is so light that I feel like you don't even really need the self propelled feature but boy is it a nice feature to have. The blade control on this model is far better than the older model. to engage the blade it requires a two part system where you push a button and pull the blade lever down. This allows you to engage the blades if you want but also have the engage running and disengage the blades. That is a super nice feature if you are bagging so you aren't constantly having to start your lawn mower after each time you go to dump your bag. The mower also does great with collecting grass clippings and leaves if you have switched it to bag mode and the mulching mode is really good and you can barely tell you left anything behind. The lever to switch from bagging to mulching is super easy to move and in a nice location on the mower. Also the start up for this mower is so easy and smooth, hardly any effort to pull start the engine. Overall I think this is a great mower and would highly recommend getting this for both the home owner and the professional. Honda has really out done themselves with this mower.

I'm an admitted diehard Honda fan. Motorcycles, cars, you name it, Honda products have always given me the most "bang for the buck." They have been exceptionally well-built products, providing me decades of reliable service. And this 3-in-1 variable speed self-propelled mower is a great example of Honda forethought in design. Like others in the Honda HRN series, this particular model offers up a host of features not found on competitors' mowers. First, there's the 160cc Honda engine, long known for its superior longevity and low-maintenance. And because this model has an automatic choke, it's super easy to start. Proof? I'm a retired female, and when I can stand upright & easily start the engine with ONE easy pull of the starter grip, you know it's any easy starter. Two other features address owner comfort when operating. You can quickly adjust & set the height/angle of the handlebar, as well as adjust the relative position of the paddles on the Smart Drive control-- a godsend to anyone with carpal tunnel or arthritis. Same goes for the variable speed -- the flexibilty offered you to instantly adjust the mower's speed to your need (hills, curb edges, etc) makes it an effortless mowing experience -- no fatigue from pushing or trying to keep up with a one-setting SP. I've included a photo of the mower's mulching abilities, as well as one of the primary reason it's so effective-- the micro-cut twin blades. There's a detailed explanation about the blades in the above video, but in summary the great thing about this configuration is the cutting of the grass is so fine it enhances both mulching AND bagging -- the clippings are super small. The one feature that Honda has included that I have not seen in other mowers is the unique and VERY safe blade Roto-Stop. The blades will not rotate when you first start the mower. You must first depress the Roto-Stop and engage the drive, which results in blade engagement and rotation, which you'll feel and hear as it engages. It's a foolproof method of ensuring those sharp blades are only rotating when YOU want them to. Great safety feature! There are too many features to address in one review. Suffice it to say this is one mower well worth your time considering -- it makes mowing something to look forward to! Highly recommend.

This is a superb and easy to use gas lawn mower, nothing more than what you would expect from Honda. In addition to this review, see the video below for an overview and demonstration. The new GCV170 engine is powerful and runs well, the double-blade mulches well (generally 1" clippings) and the bag/rear discharge are functional. The mower is a bit heavy at 88 lbs. but the power self-propelled capability is more than strong enough to help you push the mower around. The deck easily adjusts from 1" to 4" at 1/2" intervals for a precise cut. The blade-stop is great when you need to pick up branches, move toys or just need to step away quickly. The engine keep running but the blades can be shut off. I also find this useful at times when I dont want the mower blowing clippings or the blade hitting a curb when I am moving it from one side of the yard to another. The fuel shut-off is great for winterizing and the auto-choke saves the slight hassle of manually-adjusting the choke. The mower comes in a box already assembled in a box, you just need to expand the handle and click them into place. For compact storage, you just need to turn two knobs and fold the handles back. 12 oz. of oil was in the box and with some gas, it fired right up after I turned it on. I adjusted the deck height and a lever easily changes the mower from mulch-mode to bag/rear chute. To engage the blade you just push a button and pull the lever back and the blades kick in. To engage the self-propelling, just depress the large paddle on the handles and the mower goes. The self-propelling is very strong and fast, it took me a little while to get used to. My old mower was front wheel drive and much slower. This Honda mower is very fast, almost absurdly fast, at full speed. You have to run to keep up. But once you get the hang of the paddle, you learn a good speed. Its like driving a new car, the gas pedal is different. One thing I don't like about the mower is, because it is rear-wheel drive, if you engage the self-propelling too fast, the front end of the mower will lift up like a drag racer. The deck is smooth and relatively easy to hose off. Overall, I love this mower, it cuts well, is functional and precise. It has a lot of 'creature comforts' as well. The mower is made of durable and quality parts and I trust Honda small engines the most. Assembled in the USA.

Economical upgrade. I had a 600 dollar competitor and this thing blows it away. Honestly the blade stop feature when your bagging is worth the money alone. OK it's quiet by comparison, it runs smoother by comparison, The adjustable position control for the self propel is great , and as easy as it starts I don't think I'm going to miss my electric start. Neat thing about this mower is the dipstick tube. If you ever have to add oil and you spill it on this mower you should have your grass cut by someone else . The tube lines right up to the oil bottle before the oil gets out of the bottle. Another feature is a fuel shut off , I can drain the carb before winter and stabilize the gas in the tank without having to run it totally dry. This dual blade system mulches like no other mower I have ever owned. What didn't I like . Well the bagging system needs some refinement. With the blade stop feature its OK to reach in the chute and clear the grass from the bag/mulch switch and you will have to. If you were mulching and you have to bag then the sliding mechanism clogs. The bag is bigger than the opening of a lawn and leaf bag, so you spill shavings on the pavement. I also wish it had a mower deck flush port on it like the competitive product. Last but not least the engine has back fire just like all it's competitors. At idle it pops and makes noise but hey it's a small engine.

      Poor idle
Ran well when mowing but would not idle at the low throttle setting and surged at the higher throttle setting. Bought it on sale and had no problem returning it but they could not reoder it for me at the same price. Disappointing. Got my money back.

        Very Disappointed!!!
Read several reviews and thought I was buying a good replacement for a Husqvarna with Honda engine (spindle broke). I have two mature oak trees that keep me busy in the fall. The Husqvarna was great at collecting the leaves. Was excited to give this Honda a try. It let me down. It is terrible at collecting leaves and makes a mess when you empty what it did pick up. Bought on a Thursday, used on Saturday, and will be going back on Monday.
