as far as I can see the only difference in specs between this $499 mower and the $399 model is the electric start feature. Is this really worth a hundred bucks?
Asked by: Greg
Electric start and you can switch it so the blade stops spinning and you can release the bar and the motor will idle while you move something or sip a drink and then grab the bar and re-engage the blades.

Does the drive work when the blade is stopped?

Asked by: Dave
Yes, that is one of two added feature over the one that costs less.

side discharge

do Honda lawn mowers come with discharge chute?
Asked by: Marty
Not that I know of. What Honda did was to have the discharge come out the rear of the mower with the black cover providing protection to your legs. It works really well as the clippings do not go all over the place. I like it for cutting the grass around bushes that have mulch around them as the clippings get dropped Right behind the mower instead of all over. Just got rid of my side discharge ( 21 years old), Hondas are well worth the extra money, because you get more than what you pay for as compared to Toro,Snapper, etc.

On the Honda self propelled mowers does the mower cut when pulled backwards?

When mowing around corners or tight spaces will the mower cut when pulled backwards? Am I correct in thinking that the drive train must be disengaged with the "thumb controls" ? Is it easy to pull backwards and does it damage the mower?
Asked by: ConsumerDave
Forwards, backwards, the mower cuts grass as long as engine is running.

As others have noted, the clutch for the self-driving feature is hard to get used to. The first time out, my thumbs joints were very sore from pushing on the paddles. The next few times I wised-up and wrapped my hand around the base of the paddle. Then it was just a matter of squeezing to engage the drive. Still, this is not very intuitive. Moreover, the speed of the drive is very fast and the mower tends to run away from you if you are not careful. And you cannot just set the throttle lower since this makes the cutting blades much less effective. Probably the biggest problem is that when the mower zooms ahead, you are left tugging on the handle which tips the front of the mowing deck up in the air. Since the blades are no longer parallel to the ground, this gives a very ragged cut (I often re-mow these patches). My old John Deere JS25 had a much better system -- the top of the handle bent so that if the mower went too fast it would naturally disengage the drive.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from First Honda Over a half-century ago when I was a kid, I became responsible for mowing the lawn and other yard upkeep, and have been doing it ever since. My Dad had a Toro, so naturally I did too, exclusively. But the quality of the product (although not the design) has been going downhill for the last couple of decades and the last one I bought had problems from the get-go, and the self-propelling transmission went out in less than 7 years (I do live in Florida so we do use our mowers year-round). Several of my neighbors had Hondas and recommended them quite highly (as did Consumer Reports) so I decided to give them a try. I've only used it three times (as of this review, but will update as necessary) but so far the Honda has been an outstanding performer right out of the box. Starts on the first or second pull every time, is easy to maneuver and control, excellent blade height adjustment and has smooth and even cutting (no dips or choppy grass blades). An excellent performer overall.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good solid mower. The mower took some getting used to. Things I don't like: The run selector on the left hand side moves too easily. If I'm running up against brush on the left hand side it will pull back the selector because the tension is not strong enough. I use the heck out of this thing and after about 20 uses, the left front wheel fell off. Luckily, the trailer caught all of the parts except for the nut. I am going to replace the nuts with wingnuts instead and use a little LockTite which should solve the problem. I can't believe I'm saying this but the speed I would imagine would be too fast for some. If you depress the paddles fully, the mower takes off. The mower is a little weak when it comes to mulching/bagging big stuff, but for an average homeowner, no problem at all. I like the design of the paddles. I like the rear wheel drive. I like the fact that you can keep running while you bag. I like the look of the mower. The cuts look good and clean with the dual blade. I would definitely recommend.

But this mower may not be for everyone. My wife likes to mow while I am edging and trimming. She decided that, with her aging knees, a self propelled mower would make her job easier. We bought this mower with high hopes it would. Just the opposite. First, adjust as she may, she could never get the "go forward paddles" adjusted so they didn't put a painful strain on her hands. Secondly, this mower is noticeably heavier and, even tho not touching the paddles, it takes a bit of tugging to pull the mower back when having to do some forward and backward maneuvering between flower beds and other obstacles. Straight line mowing is great, but a lot of our yard is landscaped and this mower made for more work. The next time she mowed was with our trusty non-self propelled, lighter weight, big rear wheeled (newer 4 stroke model) LawnBoy. She said we should just stick with the LB as it took less work to get the job done. Had to return the Honda.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Honda 21inch W/Blade Stop I returned the Honda mower without the blade stop after only one mow and replaced it with this one. Having the blade stop is well worth the extra 100.00 price tag. The mower's engine is quite compared to my previous Toro and seems a lot more powerful considering its only 10cc more. Originally I was shopping for the largest engine I can find but after all the reviews and videos I watched I figured I would give this one a try. The rear self propelled drive is very fast and has excellent traction, much better then the front wheel drive I had previously. I was first apprehensive about the 500.00 price tag for a walk behind mower but I got 50.00 bucks off and I went for it and I'm glad I did. The quality is a substantial step up from all of the other mowers. If you get anything out of this review, trust me it is worth the extra cost for the blade stop feature and don't let the 160cc engine fool you, this sucker has a lot of power.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from This product has great features but is pricey. I am a gardener and my yard is landscaped pretty nicely so I have plenty of experience to comment. The ease of start and the Clip Director is this Honda model's best features. The brake-blade-clutch design is a plus because you can stop and pick up a branch while the engine keeps running. It has plenty of power so you won't be disappointed there. And you will love the Clip Director! It does leave a wheel trail of grass when set on mulch mode tho, more so than my previous 2 John Deere-equivalent mowers did. When using on cut mode some grass does blow through the back onto me and the ground. Again I did not experience this with the JD units. Also the Smart Drive Control is not ergonomic in my opinion, whereas my JD mowers were much easier to use. All in all this is a pretty good mower (yet pricey) but it does not fully match up with a feature-equivalent John Deere mower in my humble opinion.

Best lawn mower I have owned; very well engineered, solid build, and a lot of mower for the price... Replaced a 20 year old John Deere 14PZ that simply refused to die, so nothing in the current generation of mowers for comparison. Unpacking and setup took ten minutes; the mower ships with a container of oil which is added by the owner. Instructions are clear and I was mowing right away. Started on the first pull which wasn't expected. Surprised how quiet the engine runs. My lawn is St. Augustine and in the summer cutting height is 3 1/2". Wheel height adjustment is simple. I bag the clippings every other mowing so the Roto Stop was a must have feature, works perfectly. The Smart Drive control is very well thought out, you can control with either the left or right thumb; took me a few passes to get a technique going, but works flawlessly. Removing and installing the bag is simple, system is well thought out. I think the mower is an excellent value at this price point; my only regret is not buying this mower sooner. Love it...

I used it to clean up leaves at the end of season, and it saved me from using a large number of bags. Worth the money and runs strong.
