Yes! You can engage or not engage the self-propelled function whenever the engine is running. This is good for repositioning the mower while you do not want the blade spinning.

Hi cg, One of the easiest ways to 'recycle' a used push mower is to put a 'free' sign on it and leave it out by the road or in a public area. This is a great way to avoid it likely ending up in a landfill if it still has some usable life left in it.

I just purchased one of these mowers. In the owner's manual it states that the top speed is 3.6 to 4.0 mph. It requires a fast walking pace to operate it at full forward speed.

Best Mulching Mower
I use my Honda mower for yard cleanups most of the year. This machine is the most powerful and best mulching mower I have ever used. My customers love it!

If you’re looking for a lawnmower and this is your first foray into purchasing Honda’s, you won’t regret it. Starts on the first pull and is effortless to control. The new version with the bigger gas refill is far better than the previous HRR model I had. Going with Honda is going with one of the best and longest running mowers in the industry. However, if you don’t have the budget to purchase an HRX the other models work fine as well. This was an upgrade for me over my HRR which I had for several years.

This Honda mower is by far the best mower I have ever owned. I followed the instructions for unboxing the mower, some assembly required for the clippings catcher bag, and adding the included oil. The mower started right away and cut the lawn with no issues. The speed control for the mower has a great range for just about everyone and every lawn. The fact that if you release the control handles the blade will stop yet the engine continues to operate is awesome. The no rust mower deck is easy to clean after the yard work is completed and the handle folds over for compact storage. Honda engine is the most quiet I have owned; yet it has plenty of power to cut taller grass. The twin blades make a beautiful cut and there is a selection of height adjustments for the wheels which are easy to set. This is an Awesome Honda Lawnmower. Plus it is sold by The Home Depot which makes the purchase even more of a great deal The Garden Expert at the store answered all my questions and assisted in loading the mower which is in a hugh box. So bring a truck or trailer because I don't think you will get it home in a car. I think Home Depot has a delivery program as well if you have need of that just ask while at the store.

We've had this mower a little over a year. I have 3 kids that use and abuse it. Recently I was mowing to give the lawn a little adult attention. As I was cruising along through some tall grass the mower suddenly jerked violently, so violently the air filter cover shot off, the engine shut down and much to my surprise I found my long lost pickaxe. The blades were substantially dinged, my pants were soiled, the pickaxe was toast BUT the mower deck was perfect. This thing is indestructible! After I replaced the air filter and cover the Honda started right up and finished the job. My kids have been bugging me to leave a 5 star review, so here it is! Moral of the story, don't let your kids use a pickaxe to play in the woods BUT if you do this Honda has you covered, just keep extra blades on hand ;-)

This review represents the latest model as of 2019 (HRX2176HYA) and was purchased and delivered from Home Depot. I have only used the new Honda once out of the box and I will update this review at the end of the summer and future years if needed. My lawn: I mow under a ¼ of an acre on a typical postage stamp-sized property. While most of the mowing is typical back and forth (trees are behind an edged garden), I do have a few obstacles: a curvaceously-edged garden area, a large play structure that sits at a pitched angle, a shared power supply area, and a deck/patio area. The front lawn is pretty level, the sides are steeply sloped to the backyard, and the backyard itself slopes down the farther from the house you go and is not level in any direction. While my lawn does not have bare patches and is full of grass, it has plenty of thick, perennial grassy weeds growing among the regular grass (thicker the farther back you go) and some prairie grass in the far back. My lawn is almost always in shade, keeping the grass rather moist until rather late in the day. My two previous mowers, a hydrostatic Honda that I have been using since the late 80’s/early 90’s and a Craftsman purchased in the last handful of years, have had difficulty not clumping up the continually wet grass, and add to it the thicker, hardier grassy weeds in the back, my mowers have had a hard time not making more work for me, usually raking. To my neighbors chagrin, the most success has come with the side discharge, but the cut quality and occasional clumping still make a mess. The new Honda: I opted for the HRX model for its big engine (the latest model has a GCV200 engine), the mulching capabilities, the 5-year warranty, the dual blades, and the Nexite deck; I was a little concerned about the rear-only discharge option. Also, I specifically chose the HYA model for the hydrostatic drive system; the lesser models have the gray-plastic handle/knobby things that look rather cheap and didn’t pique my interest in the least. My old Honda also had the blade stop option with the motor running, a feature I really missed when I got the Craftsman a number of years ago, so I wanted that as well. The HZA model has an electric start, but I didn’t think I would particularly need that. It has an easy set-up with everything attached in the box, just add oil, gas, and you’re off to the races. Starting the mower took one easy-going pull and everything started handily. The size of the mower was a little disconcerting as it looks like a beast for a push mower, but the handling is actually lighter than my older Honda model and I can set the handles higher than that one too. Since it was my first mow with the new Honda, I set the speed slower than I normally would and set the height at 3 inches (the 3 setting (it goes to 4)) only because it has been rainy this season and I wasn’t sure if too low of a setting would clog it up; I also set this on full mulch as our neighborhood doesn’t accept bagged grass or burning and I was afraid the rear discharge would leave a trail. In any case, the self-propel moved like a dream; on my old Honda, I pushed that beast most of the time even though it was self-propelled. The high handle position was great for my height (another difficulty with the old Honda was the unadjustable low setting). The mulching was great; in the past my sidewalk was filled with clippings, and I would be walking over clippings and clumps as I mowed. Today, I can think of two instances where I noticed the tiniest pile of finely cut grass, and it was from a rather uneven part of the lawn that also housed the end of my tiled water pipe, otherwise the sidewalk was completely clear of grass. Any other accumulation was unnoticeable, the drive was great, although I look forward to see how it handles at a faster speed. Final Thoughts: I still have to put this new Honda through the paces, but there was no trail of clippings, the drive system was smoother than my car, there were no clogs (although there was a handful of grass in the closed off bagging chute as shown by other reviewers), and I didn’t walk into the house with back problems when I was done. The cut of the lawn was even (no oddly un-mown blades of grass left behind) and since the deck of the mower is ½ inch wider than the tires, it did a little bit better than my other mowers along edges, although I will still need to trim. If you aren’t used to a self-propelled mower of this size, I could see people being unhappy with the weight, especially if you have more obstacles than me, in addition to having to hold down both the forward-motion bar and the blade activator bar whilst mowing; I’m used to it. The price for all of these options could also be a deal breaker for many, but after using this, it is definitely a luxury mower. In the end, the fact that it successfully mulched even my heartiest grassy weeds without a trace, easily climbed my side slopes, and didn’t take a bit of effort for me, makes the mower a success so far. After the first mow, the Honda HRX-HYA is highly recommended.

I read a lot of reviews and articles about what lawnmower to buy. I was worried about the blade stop and propulsion handles because I have been using a toro self pace for 20 years. After using the lawnmower three time I can say that I like the way the handles are set up and work. I really like the lawnmower as a whole the quality seems to be there and will update that after a summer of mowing. The only complaint that I have is in full mulch mode the grass clippings get by the shield that’s supposed to stop it.(see pictures) for a 700 dollar mower I would expect better. I like the hydrostatic drive and am glad I spent the extra money to get it. I tested a friends one with the paddle and thought the set it and forget it was better.

Overall very happy. The motor is easy to pull start, and always starts on single pull. The blade stop feature works great and helps a lot after having to bag a lot. I bought this version of the honda as I had one similar to this for 25 years, so it was easy for me to spend the extra money on this one. I also had a Honda engine mounted to Husky, and after 10 yrs the deck was shot, but engine was still fine. so getting the Nexite deck was a must! Only complaint is that it doesn't backup easily, but other similar mowers seem to have the same problem as well.

Engine stopped working
Ordered on line. Unpacked and set up and ran engine for about a minute. No problem. Waited three days to run again because I wanted to mow on weekend. Filled with gas started up and cut the grass for about 50 feet and engine stopped. Could not pull to start. Engine was frozen. Wrote Honda asking them to deliver new mower. There response was to bring to dealer. Obviously the mower was bad from the factory so it seems logical that they would make good on the sale. Called Honda and rep offered no satisfaction. It appears only choice is to return to the Depot. Needless to say I will not be buying another Honda. Will most likely go electric. I find Honda’s attitude to be well below what I would expect from a well known company with a good reputation.
