Questions & Answers

does each 240 volt unit require its own thermostat

does each 240 volt unit require its own thermostat
Asked by: Ron
No, but there is a limit on the total amperage/wattage for each thermostat. As I recall it was 16.7 amps/4000 watts, BUT use whatever the instructions say.

Is this for oil heat or electric heat

Asked by: mike
Both, as long as it's 220

Does amps matter in choosing thermostats.I want to replace my old radiant ceiling heat thermostats. I have 240V, 2 wire, current thermostats rated at 22amps on 15 amp breakers. But this Honeywell thermostat is 14.6 amps. Not sure if I should take into consideration the amps or watts. My current thermostat does not list watts only the name of the company when googled says 22 amps.
Asked by: thermohunter
Yes amperage matters. Typically an electric heater is the ONLY device on a circuit, a dedicated circuit, but that is not always the case. Assume your radiant ceiling heater is on a dedicated circuit, whatever its amperage rating is for it, the thermostat you use to control it must have a higher amperage rating. Sometimes multiple electric heaters are on the same circuit, which can be in series or parallel. In series and controlled by the same thermostat, you would need to add together the amperage draw of all of the heaters in series and make sure the thermostat is rated higher than that number. In parallel, the thermostat only needs to be of higher rating than the heaters it controls. Since you have a 15 amp breaker, (assuming a dedicated circuit) then your heater is likely less than 15 amps, otherwise it should trip the breaker every time it turns on. Exceeding the amperage rating risks components or the electrical wire overheating and causing a fire. My old mechanical thermostats gave off no heat, but these Honeywell thermostats have vents at the top and bottom and you can feel the heat the circuitry give off if you rest your hand on the top of it. These thermostats have a heating element feature to drive the element less as the room reaches temperature to give the feel of a steady temperature, you will need to turn that feature off for some types of heating units, especially those with fans.

The wiring diagram shows that the thermostat is connected in series between the supply and the baseboard heater. And there are no additional lines powering the thermostat. Does it have an internal battery that might need changing? else how are the electronics in the thermostat powered.
Asked by: Kash
Kash, I purchased this thermostat for my Sunroom project and you are correct it is wired in series with the power supply and has worked flawless. It controls temperature in the room to what ever you set it and heats to bring it back to set point. The clock in the stat has kept exact time, so there has to be a internal battery or back-up. I have shut down the circuit and turned it back on to find everything still on time and set. I would give it 5 out of 5 stars! Thanks Bob Thompson
