It has prongs underneath to detect water prompt the alert with an alarm. We use it on the floor as intended. The water would have to get much higher to reach the prongs if it isn’t on the floor. I would contact Honeywell to ask them if it would work on it’s side. It’s a great product. Very reasonably priced for a useful tool.

It's a loud piercing screaming alarm sound. If that is similar to the other alarms that you have in this location then you won't be able to differentiate. However, any alarm it's worth investigating. And considering the price point? You just purchase one audition it and see if it works for you. It's a reliable device and it has helped me mitigate an under-the-counter, of a vanity in a bathroom, water event.

Every household needs this product!
Save yourself a plumbing nightmare and buy this! This product is easy to “install” and works great. I posted a YouTube video on how to install this and why every household needs this product. https://youtu.be/2mGo1pUcR-0

I tested the alarm in a sink and found the sound level high enough to alert me if the water rises. I intended to use it in my A/C air handler closet in the event the condensation drain clogged and backed up. I think it will work fine in that application. As a suggestion, why not make it float-able so that the alarm rises with the water level but continues sounding the alarm. As it is, I'm sure that higher water will short out the batteries and silence the alarm if the water rises rapidly before the alarm is noticed.

Feel safer with this great deal!
Tough to beat the low price on a name brand, especially if you're buying multiple water leak alarms to place by every sink, toilet, and appliance in your bathrooms, kitchen, laundry room, and anywhere else water leaks could occur (which you SHOULD). Only qualm is this product runs on pricey 9V batteries, which must be purchased separately. This seems to be true of any comparable water leak alarm, though.

Couldn't be easier. Put in a 9 volt battery and lay on the floor. Not as loud as I would prefer, but it does set the dogs off.

It needs to be a lot louder. It's in my basement. It needs a auxillary alarm to put upstairs in your living area to hear it.

Simple set up, works just like a smoke detector, but for water. Haven't had the experience of a water leak since it's been in place, and hope I don't have to, but it's peace of mind being there if there is another leak.

This is exactly what we needed. The other leak detectors are connected with WiFi which doesn’t work in a furnace room. This is also smaller than what the pix depicts. Great price!

Pretty slick unit that is battery operated. It has two metal sensors on bottom that sense water, you can test the unit by touching the two sensors with you fingers. I bought them to put under sinks as that's a typical place for leaks with baskets drains or hoses etc.
