Will this unit require any paid service etc to use it with WIFI. Or is all I need is wifi and a iphone app
Asked by: Michael
I have two, one for my upstairs and one for my downstairs HVAC systems. Both conect to my wifi, which enables me to access and control the thermostats from anywhere with the free app on my phones and iPads. There is no extra cost for this ability. Craig

Can you turn the fan on to run 100% of the time. I see one of answers posted says only 33% of the time. Our current non-programmable Honeywell let’s us run all the time, and that seems to keep the temperature balanced better, and we do not here the constant start up and stop.
Asked by: Ldnone
Yes just choose the "Fan On" setting, when setting up your thermostat.

As this will be for a vacation home, I don't wish to program the unit at all, but wish to use it only manually and via WiFi. Can the programming feature be turned off or easily blocked?
Asked by: Larry
Yes. For the RTH9585WF at the thermostat itself, in SETTINGS; Select PREFERENCES Select ADVANCE PREFERENCES In Scheduling Preferences Select either NON-PROGRAMABLE or PROGRAMABLE Keep in mind if you select the programable mode you can set a temperature either at the thermostat or via wifi with a HOLD. The HOLD can either be permanent or temporary. In temporary you can select a time at which it will revert to the program schedule. You cannot select NON-PROGRAMABLE or PROGRAMABLE via wifi.

The only thing good about them is the fact that their tech support answered my call very quickly. And the person on the line was very knowledgeable and spoke good, easy to understand English. Their user and installation guides are very confusing. And all of their residential thermostats do not allow for advanced programming. For my situation, I have a heat pump unit. When I call for any heat, even one degree more than the room temperature, the auxiliary heat kicks on with the heat pump. In the mean time my electrical meter is spinning out of control, setting me up for an expensive electric bill. Lux thermostat have many advanced settings, allowing you to customize the operation to you personal preferences. For example, I can chose to have between 1-9 degrees offset as to when my auxiliary heat should kick on to assist in rapid heating of my house. This should be my choice, not some person at Honeywell.

This thermostat was installed Oct 2017 and failed in Aug 2018, it lasted hardly a year. My previous "smart" thermostat lasted 3 weeks, so I guess Honeywell is a bit smarter huh? Prior to this I had a Honeywell dumb thermostat installed in 2004, the only reason we replaced it is because the screen became unreadable, but otherwise it worked like a champ, no problems whatsoever. Then our problems started with these "smart" thermostats, I think we should just stay with the dumb stuff, at least they work as expected. My complaints are: It is lacking certain features to control compressor run time and fan run time. It tends to switch on and off for short periods of time rather than running longer. My other thermostat had a smart feature that ran the fan for a couple of minutes longer to keep circulating the cold residual air. It started randomly giving problems, like not starting the air handler when the compressor started, or not switching off the ac when it reached the set temperature.

I've only had it a week, so I'll update the review if anything goes wrong. It was not the easiest thing to install, though. This replaced a Honeywell programmable unit that was battery-powered, which means that there was no “C” wire on my previous wiring. You probably know by reading all the prior comments that this new unit absolutely will not work without a “C” wire. My old unit used a W, Y, G and R wire, but no C. If this is you, the Honeywell instructions basically offer 2 options: Option 1 - You can scavenge an unused wire that is hopefully in your wiring harness and use it as a “C” wire; Option 2 – You can use the G wire as a C wire, but this option involves some somewhat complicated re-wiring inside your furnace, so I ruled this out in favor of option 1. Within my wiring harness, there were 4 unused wires, a Light Blue, Orange, Black and Brown. So, I thought that I’d use one of these as my “new” C wire. At random, I chose the Light Blue one first. I went down to the basement, where our Carrier Natural Gas-fired forced-air furnace is. The problem is the original installer had cut all 4 unused wires inside a junction box outside the furnace. I ran a wire from this junction box to the 24 VAC “C” Common terminal inside the furnace. This does involve opening up the furnace, which might deter some people, but it wasn't hard. The terminals inside my Carrier unit were clearly labeled. Using a wire nut, I connected this 24VAC Common wire to the Light Blue wire in the junction box. I then went to the Thermostat and used a voltmeter to measure the VAC across this Light Blue wire and the R (red) wire, which should have given me about 24 V. I got zero. So, ok, the Light Blue wire apparently did not have continuity up to the Thermostat. I tried the Orange wire next with the same results. Then the Black wire, again with the same results. About to give up, I thought, why stop now, and so I hooked up the Brown wire (the only one left), and wouldn’t you know it – it worked! Now that I (finally) had it working, I could start playing with it. Setup is easy with simple-to-follow menu prompts. I was also able to download the Honeywell Total Connect Comfort app. I found this easy to use as well. I like that there’s virtually no lag in this app. When I bump up the temperature say 5 degrees, once I hit the <Submit> button, this change is reflected on the Thermostat itself within 2-3 seconds. All-in-all, after a lengthy install (mostly due to my wiring – can’t blame Honeywell for that), I am very satisfied with my new Honeywell Programmable Color Touch Thermostat. And I feel that I got a good deal, since BGE (Baltimore Gas & Electric) were offering a $100 rebate!

This is a great smart thermostat, and it works with both my Samsung Smart Things and Google Home. One thing that's easy to miss is that the auto changeover setting (to automatically switch from heat to cool instead of manually having to choose one) is disabled by default, and it kind of hard to find. You have to go to Settings/Preferences/Advanced Preferences/Heating and Cooling System Changeover, and then you can select "automatic" instead of "manual." Other than that one hard-to-find setting, though, I think this is a great unit.

I needed to hire my furnace service company to install it for me since it requires a "C" common wire which I did not have. The "footprint" of this thermostat is much smaller than my old one, so I will need to apply some touchup paint around it. My service company spent about 2 hours installing this because he had to pull a new wire from the furnace, thru the wall, and to the thermostat. I like the fact that I can control my room temperature from the comfort of my easy chair using my I-pad or cell phone, and it has large easy to read numbers on the display screen.

Then I started to notice the temperature and humidity readings varying from other devices and units in the house. It's safe to say that it's 5 degrees off now on the thermostat and at least that on the humidity meter if not more. I turned the unit off upstairs because I don't trust it anymore. It runs all the time and I don't know where to set it. Looking for something to replace it with that is also wifi. Love the design and features and app control. But it started to go bad after 3 months. It's possible to be a single defected item.

It has worked great until yesterday. When the thermostat calls for cooling, nothing happens; no compressor or fan. I checked the transformer on the furnace and it is good. I then installed a jumper wire from R to Y on the unit and the cooling cycle started. I next removed the thermostat and jumped the R and Y on the tstat base and cooling started again. I then reinstalled the thermostat and nothing. I really like this unit but to pay 200 bucks for a t stat to last for 1-1/2 years is not acceptable to me.

The home I was installing it into was an older home without this wire. The kit came with instructions for older homes, but the instructions didn't work. Thinking it was user error, I paid a professional to install it. He ran into the same problem I experienced. Unfortunately, I have to return the thermostat to the store. It would have been nice had the box informed me that there could be issues installing this thermostat into older homes.
