Anniversary WindTunnel Self-Propelled Bagged Upright Vacuum Cleaner is rated 4.2 out of 5 by 776.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Outstanding and durable My last Hoover vacuum still worked over 30 years later. I only needed to buy a new one because replacement brushrolls were no longer available. This new example surprised me with how it is almost identical to my last one, then called a Power Drive. I have taken apart everything mentioned in the maintenance and troubleshooting sections of the manual and it appears to be very well built; even better than the last one. This one was assembled in America and has a 3 year warranty. Since I am careful with my things and keep up with maintenance I expect this one will last, too. I love this model's self-propel feature and the new Dirt Finder works great. The extension hose stretches a long way. Suction is strong. I don't think it is any louder than any other vacuum. The vacuum powered hand brush tool is a nice touch. The solid plastic "upholstery tool" left scratch marks on my furniture's fabric. The brush works better. The cord is long and sturdy. Genuine Hoover HEPA Type Y bags are cloth, work extraordinarily well, are not that easy to find and cost at least $4 each. I found cheaper bags that sounded like the same thing, but were not. it is worthwhile to read the manual before operating the vacuum. There are lots of things to learn and maybe ignoring them are responsible for some of the failures I've seen.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from A real big headache! After owning a Self Propelled Concept II, which had no cleaning tools, I decided to purchase a new self-propelled vacuum cleaner.  It worked fine for all of three months, and then it wouldn't "drive itself." I have zero strenght due to a broken back, so I have had to really struggle with this machine.  It went through so many belts, I quit counting, and was in the shop a lot.  The spinning pet brush had to be taken apart all of the time due to poor engineering, and I even had to replace it, because the screws would not hold the cover together, and the machine's brush roller never cut off when upright, so the smell of burning rubber made me have to cut off the power, as smoke would often come from the bottom.  As of right now, I am downright angry that I've had to replace this vacuum cleaner with another one that actually works.  Sad that the integrity of this machine cannot come near to that of the Concept II, which still works after decades.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I LOVE THIS VACUUM! I've had a bagless vacuum for many years. I'm not sure why I switched over. But, I absolutely HATE them! They're dirty, time consuming and just a major pain! I've wanted to go back to a bagged vacuum for a long time. I finally just decided one day that I had had enough with the mess and hassle of my current one. I have cats and a parrot and there is always hair and bird food on the floor. I'm constantly cleaning up after them and it doesn't take long to fill a bagless. I got online and started researching. This vacuum had so many good reviews and it had features that I liked, so it was easy to make this decision. I had forgotten how well a real vacuum works. The suction is strong. It has so many features. The dirt indicator lights, the self propel action, the height level that takes it flat so you can get under beds and my coffee table is amazing! But, for me the best feature hands down, is the BAG!! I will NEVER own a bagless vacuum again! I just love it! :0) I will definitely be a Hoover customer from now on...

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Easy to use Love the self- propelled feature. Makes it easy to vacuum. I hope Hoover will still make this bagged vacuum. I find bag-less models to messy.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great features! I have severe Rheumatoid Arthritis which has made housework difficult much less vacuuming. The self-propelled feature makes vacuuming so much easier.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great vacuum with great features! I just bought my 3rd Anniversary Wind Tunnel Self Propelled Bagged Upright! I have this new one upstairs where we have more carpet, rotate the second oldest one to the lower level, and the oldest one to use for cleaning two rental properties. I love the vacuum cleaner, it is always dependable, great suction, great onboard tool selection for any job I need to do, and I really love to be able to just throw the bag away when it is full. I dislike bagless models, too messy! Having 3 of the same vacuum cleaner is great because I know just which bags & belts they all take, and the maintenance on these models is super easy, as I do all of that. It may be just a little heavy, however the built in carry handle on the back makes lifting it easier. The price is reasonable too and Hoover offers a 3 YEAR WARANTEE!!!! How can I go wrong with that?

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Is it possible to love a vacuum cleaner? I'm as close to loving this one as is possible.  Bought almost 2 years ago and still working great -- no problems!  The first time I used it in my home, for 3 hours straight, and was amazed that the bag was FULL before the second hour.  Pounds of dirt and sand were removed! IMPORTANT to note is we bought this at a small independent dealer who assembled it for us (no charge) and they DEMONSTRATED how to change carpet heights and switching from carpet to bare floors (tip the vacuum slightly forward before making the changes), and also to NEVER lift it by the handle (which is where the forward/backward "clutch/switch" is located.  Also they demonstrated how to disconnect the hose for attachments, how to change filters, and so on. I think these instructions from the dealer contributed to my continued very high satisfaction with this model.   I would highly recommend this model to anyone.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from great vacuum with a crazy design flaw I very rarely write reviews, but this vacuum drives me crazy enough every time I use it that I'm compelled to write this one. It's taken me a while. We've had it for 2 years now. Long enough for me to be reminded of how many times I've vacuumed. It's crazy to me that a company like Hoover would design a vacuum with a black bumper around the front that actually leaves a black mark on any white baseboards it rubs up against. The bumper is there presumably BECAUSE a vacuum is prone to rubbing up against surfaces such as this. All over my house, I've got black marks where the vacuum came a little to close and left its evidence behind. Very annoying for a tool that's about cleaning up! Other than that it's a great vacuum and a good value. But this design flaw is really inexcusable.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Belts Break or Come Off Too often I purchased the same vacuum 3 different times over the past 10 years. I have pets and children with allergies and this vacuum has awesome suction power. However, the belts are a pain. On the first 2 vaccums, the small belt broke atleast every other month - the replacement belt was hard to find and was difficult to put on. Now, on the vacuum which I purchased only 6 months ago, the large belt falls off atleast once a week. I figured after 10 years Hoover would have fixed this problem but they haven't. I keep a "spare" vacuum around just incase the belt comes off and I have guests coming over (putting the belt back on is time-consuming). I will NOT buy this vacuum again unless Hoover addresses this reoccuring long-term problem.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A real work horse! I bought my first Windtunnel Self-Propelled vacuum about 13 years ago. When my son got his own place a year later, I gave him my vacuum and bought a new one. Two months ago, the agitator brush wasn't turning well after I put on a new belt. Since the machine was about 12 years old, I decided to get a new one rather than getting it repaired. After I assembled the new vacuum, I thought I would put another new belt on the old vacuum. It works like new again! It turns out that the first belt I out on was the wrong one. I don't know how long it's going to last but I have a brand new one to take over as soon as it 'calls it quits'. There are two features that I love about this machine; 1) self-propelled, and 2) HEPA. When pollen season comes, my sinuses appreciate the clean, filtered air after the floors have been cleaned. And, at 67 years old, I appreciate the self-propelled help around the house. It's almost fun to vacuum! [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Vacuuming had gotten so hard for me in my old age:) My husband had to take over. I used to have... Vacuuming had gotten so hard for me in my old age:) My husband had to take over. I used to have a self-propelled Kenmore years ago and when it finally broke, I couldn't justify the cost of replacing it. ($350). I was ready to hire a cleaning agency when I came upon this vacuum at a reasonable cost. I cannot describe how wonderful this vacuum is! Not too heavy, powerful suction, great on carpet and hard floors, the attachments are great, and I love that they are all attached. I particularly like the stair attachment, even though I don't have stairs. I used it on all my upholstered furniture and it did the trick. The first day I got it I cleaned 2500 sq. ft. of floors, all my blinds, lampshades, baseboards, and furniture and I was still ticking. The last vacuum I had did not have a bag and it had to be emptied and cleaned after each use. What a pain! I am done with bagless vacuums. Love knowing that the HEPA filter will help our allergies, too. If you are in need of a new vacuum that won't break your back, this is definitely the one!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from The Second One This is number 2 of our Hoover experience. We got our first one over 10 years ago. I really liked the first one we had but it began to make a LOT of noise, a very high pitch sound. So we figured it was time to retire it to the outside fun room. We got our new one and started it up. Oh my, its loud too! I thought no way can it be as loud. So we put the two together and compared. Shooot. The new one is way too loud. Just did decibel reading, the noise level is between 85 - 89 db when on. I have to wear ear muff hearing protection to vacuum. I suffer from Tinnitus (ringing in the ears) and this much noise does not help. I don't have the box anymore so I'm stuck. We have had it for less than three months. It does a great job of cleaning though. I have always liked the dirty/clean light censer. And of course the self-Propelled feature. It’s the best when you have carpal tunnel syndrome. But man oh man if you’re sensitive to loud noise I would NOT recommend this vacuum, unless you invest in a good pair of ear muff hearing protectors. It also is difficult to get the attachment out of the front of the vacuum.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent product! Home Depot had the best price in town (and I checked everywhere)! I love this vacuum cleaner - especially it's self-propelled ability which makes it very easy to maneuver! I also like the lighted dirt finder, extra long cord and adjustment for vacuuming the floor. It's the best vacuum cleaner I've ever had!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Bye bye, Miele; Hello Hoover! I had a Hoover wind tunnel years ago. It was great at cleaning but it was like trying to control a runaway train. Purchased a very expensive Miele canister about 6 yrs. ago bc I had back surgery & needed a light weight vacuum. The "drag" has become very difficult on my back so decided to go back to the self propelled wind tunnel. I am thrilled!! Had no idea I was living in a filthy house despite my constant cleaning. My BR carpet is only a year old & was very expensive but looked dirty & matted. With my Hoover it looks clean & luxurious again. It's so easy to control - not out of control - and so easy on my back. I couldn't be happier!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great features! After reading all the very helpful reviews am glad I purchased this one, It is very noisy but not a problem for this household, I suppose such powerful suction requires a powerful motor.   Very Easy to assemble, I  was very careful with the plastic parts,  just remember not to force anything and it won't break.  The Cord is very long and I love that.  The attached accessories do not get in the way of anything I do. This Vac and The self propel function is perfect for my needs.  I had a great refurbished bagless wind tunnel for years but  really prefer this 'bagged' version due to no dust flying around when replacing the bags. Have had this for 2 weeks,  I keep it on the upstairs level for 4 bedrooms and two large bathrooms, it is perfect but not practical for taking up or down stairs due to the weight when carrying it.  It fits perfectly in the hall linen closet.  I plan to review it  in a few years but I expect this vac be handed down to my heirs.  I use it a couple times a week and will be interested to find out how it works out for  my monthly house cleaners.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best vacuum for the money Read the review title again. I said this is the best vacuum for the money. It is just that. It won't compete against $800 commercial dual motor vacuums but who cares. I didn't want to spend $800. I wanted to spend $200 max. I also have news for all of you bagless fans.....they are terrible. A new bagged vacuum will always and I repeat always beat a bagless. It's just a fact. Look it up online if you don't believe me. For $200 this vacuum delivers everything you need and will last 15+ years. Sure there are some reviews that say it breaks easily or you have to change the bag too often. To those people I say yeah it's gonna break if your trying to use it like a shopvac and yeah the bag is going to fill up every time if you don't ever vacuum but 1 once a month. So for those of us normal users out there who use it normally and vacuum as often as you should, you will love it! For the of you who have gone through 10 vacuums this year....go to your local home improvement store and buy a shop vac. Don't buy this and then write a review about how it mysteriously broke after sucking up spilled chocolate milk or 10 penny nails.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly (I vacuum once a week on a plush carpet.) The first Hoover went up in smoke after two uses. The replacement lasted five uses before it burned up. My current one just died after three and a half years. Not a total death but increasingly strange noises, loud squeals, and a foul burning odor accompanied the self-propulsion taking lots of short vacations. But what dismayed me the most (and as a woodworker I have reasonably strong hands) was changing the belt. It is VERY hard to stretch and then turn on the drive wheel. It takes me 4 or 5 attempts. My wife, who does not have weak hands, couldn't stretch the awkwardly placed belt at all. Our prior self-propelled vacs (a Hoover and a Eureka) had belts that went around the brush roller and that location allowed for leverage and far easier replacement.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Have loved and still love my Hoover Self Propelled My UH50000 Wind Tunnel is going on 5 years old and today decided I should replace the bristle bar as it is a little worn. I've never had any problem with this vacuum.  I have used a Hoover self propelled wind tunnel for many years and am on my third one.  I have a  Jack Russell Terrier that sheds profusely and the Wind Tunnel sucks the hair up so easily that I just know it is also getting that ground in dirt he brings in the house.  It is the best vacuum! I had ordered a hard floor brush attachment with my previous Wind Tunnel and wanted to order another one.  Apparently Hoover isn't making this attachment any more. Thank heavens it fits on my newest Hoover.  I surely recommend that they make it available again as it is the best thing for cleaning hard wood, tile and vinyl floors!  Please, please, I would like another one for my summer home vacuum.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from This Vacuum makes me extremely unhappy I purchased this vacuum in February. I wrote a nice review in March based on what I seen looking at the vacuum. My vacuum sat in a box for over two months until I moved to my new state. I used it for two months and the switch that moved the vacuum from hard to carpet broke. Took it to the repair shop and they scratched my vacuum and the suction doesnt work like it use too. I called Hoover and they will not help me. Then last week the self propelled switch broke and stays on the self propelled feature. Yes, I was the one that wrote a review on March 20, 2012. I'm sorry to all those that read my review and bought this vacuum. It's poorly made and I dont have money to get a new vacuum right now. Its a shame that companies don't make their products like they use too. I loved this vacuum for two months during the time it worked well. Now, I have a junkie vacuum that isnt even a year old!!!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from GOING TO PURCHASE ANOTHER FOR UPSTAIRS I HAVE LOOKED FOR THE "BEST VACUUM" FOR ALONG TIME. LADIES, ISN'T THE SUCTION THE BOTTOM LINE, YOU CAN'T CLEAN IT IF YOU CAN'T SUCTION IT UP. THIS HOOVER MEETS ALL MY EXPECTIONS AND MORE. ALITTLE NOISEY YES BUT ITS NOT A STERO IT'S A VACUUM, AND A GREAT ONE. I PURCHASED A LONGER HOSE FROM HOOVER AND LOVE IT, YOU WILL TO.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Workhorse Machine I bought this vacuum for its good suction power, It delivers. Good Heavy duty machine. Picks up dog hair and other debris effortlessly. Although a bit noisy it's the type of vacuum I wanted.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent product, low price I had a 10 year old vacuum that still worked, but my wife wanted a new one so I did some research and found that the Hoover Wind Tunnel had excellent ratings and low price. She loves the self propell feature, and I couldn't believe how much better It cleaned over our old vacuum.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Some great features - Some not so great I have had my Hoover-Anniversary WindTunnel Self-Propelled Bagged Upright for almost eight months now and there are just some things that I am finding it hard to live with. The self-propelled feature does make vacuuming easier. I really like the way this vacuum picks up everything and leaves the carpet looking like new. The trouble is that it also pulls out carpet fibers that fill the bag up faster than it should and wrap around the brushes too. This can't be good for our carpet. I have it set on the highest level and that doesn't seem to help. I bought a lot of extra bags since I found out that I can only vacuum the house once before needing to replace the bag. The bags are quite expensive and, so far, I have spent almost half of what I paid for the vacuum on bags and I haven't even had it a year! A real problem is the noise level. We have to wear ear plugs when using the vacuum. The noise decibel level is terrible. I do like my vacuum, it does a good job but I think that it is harming my carpet and it it VERY expensive to buy a bag for each use.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Too many problems Not very old the vacumn would not move forward. Hoover had me take to a service center who made a height adjustment, and said it was fine. Took it home and same problem. Hoover said it was the belts, sent me the belts, I replaced, still didn't work. Hoover sent me to another repair location and I again told them that the self propel feature didn't work. Unit would just suck itself to a low pile carpet and was impossible to move forward or backward. Spent about a 5 weeks driving around, wasting my time and expense with this unit and it still don't work. Finally to Hoovers credit they are replacing the unit so I am waiting again. Hoover needs to get repair shops that know how to diagnose and repair the problems. The unit is still under warranty and these places charge Hoover but don't fix the problem. I suspect that they simply clean the debris and say it's OK. The problem is the self propel feature which is Hoovers fault, but I get to drive around to useless repair places, replace the belts, make calls and get nowhere. Doubt if I will buy a Hoover again.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Powerfull Vacuum Let me start of by saying, having 4 animals that shed, I vacuum daily...sometimes tiwce. I want to say this Hoover is an Awesome vacuum! It has excellent power! Some people complained that the vacuum is loud. Actually, is is not louder than the other 3 uprights I own. The only problem I have had with it is that I broke the cheap plastic piece that holds the powered hand tool on the front of the vacuum on its second use! So be gentle with it when you remove the hand tool! Surely Hoover could have designed that piece a little better. It is literally a tiny piece of plastic that the hand tool is suppsed to snap in and out of. Problem solved however with a small piece of velcro on the back of the hand tool. Having had several newer vacuums, incuding a Bissel Lift off pet that is a COMPLETE DISASTER and actually heavier than this self propelled Hoover, I can say this is the best mid priced model on the market. It is extremely easy to manuever around the house. You just have to get used to the fact that when you get close to furniture or in tight areas, you should turn the power drive off. Besides the Bissel, the other bagless vacuum we have is a Eureka Whirlwind which was a cheap model we purchaed for the second floor but has held up well. It however, has a a very awakward dust cup that you have to remove a filter inside the cup to empty it. The Bissel has an extremely small dust cup that has to be emptied 2 to 3 times per use (and I live in a town house). Lets just say that after my experience with these two vacuums, I have had enough of the mess and inconvenience that bagless vacuums are, not to mention the filters you are always either washing or replacing! Why did I choose the Windtunnel? Well, I recently was given my grandmothers Hoover Concept one with powerdrive which has to be at least 30 years old. It still works great by the way after installing a new bag and belts. This vacuum has Hoover's "Power Drive" (self propelled) which as a kid, I remember being facinated with. It was the 80's what can I say...lol Unfortunately, Hoover has decided to discontinue making the brushrolls for this excellent model so although it is still going strong, it misses some ares of the carpet due to the worrn brushes. After using it for the first time in years, I thought to myself, wow, I don't have to go out to the garage and dump or shake anything! What I decided I liked most about this vacuum was that it used bags and was self propelled. So I decided to start looking for a replacement with the things I new I wanted. This is why I decided to go with the Hoover Windtunnel. My only negative fellings toward Hoover is that they abandoned manufacturing in the US a few years ago [@]. But after reading the reviews on a few sites, checking out the fact that it has a 3 year warrenty, and knowing the quality of my other newer vacuums from different manufacturers, I figured what the heck, I'll give Hoover a try again. I am glad I did! After looking at many online retailers, including the big box stores, I discoverd that the Hoover website offerred the exact same model at significant savings! The bags on the Hoover site are also cheaper than almost everywere else, espeically when discounted for buying more than 1. So my impressions of this machine so far a very good. IT is exactly what I was looking for. It pulled up the carpet pile up very well and sucked all the dog and cat hair off the furniture with ease. AFter flipping over the new vacuum and the old Hoover Concept, (I know, I'm a nerd, but I was curious) I was pleasantly surprised to see that the self propelled unit on the new vacuum looks to be almost exactly the same as the one on the sturdy old Concept 1. Looks like Hoover must have know a good thing when they saw it! That is about all that is similar. Is it a sturdy American made product that you remember Hoovers being? No, but if you look around, it is much better than the current competition at this price. I am so far very pleased with this vacuum! Sorry for the run on's and the long review.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Finest vacuumn ever! I bought a Hoover self-propelled vac 12 years ago and I loved it. It finally died after many years of service. I tried other vacs, for a short time, but they could not take my Hoover s/p place. I just received it today and my heart is HAPPY!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Long Life E\We bought our first WindTunnel from Hoover 20 years ago and it has never needed servicing in all that time. So when the motor finally gave up we purchased another which will hopefully last another 20 years.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Have two and they are both great We have two of these, one for the first floor and one for the second floor. They do an amazing job of cleaning up the rugs an work well on our hardwood floors that don’t have rugs. We really like the dirt finder sensors that tells us when we’ve got the rugs really clean. We use them both a lot and find outside of changing bags and belts, and filters, they hold up very well. There’s never any emitted dust or particles which is critical for our son who has allergies. We always use HEPA filter bags with our sweepers. The bags and filters are very easy to change and we don’t have lots of emitted dust when the bag is changed. That seems to be one concern you have to deal with for bagless vacuums. The main belt can be a bit of a challenge but we always manage to get it changed. One of the sweepers is about 15 years old and one is about 3 years old. Prior to buying the unit 3 years back, we had another one that was about 17 years old but the housing on the self propel drive unit broke so we just replaced the whole vacuum instead of trying to get a replacement drive unit. We have extension hoses for both so we can easily clean corners and stairs. If our 15 year old unit has a significant part fail, we’ll just get another one as we really like the performance and the self propelled feature which is hard to find. I will comment the unit is heavy enough we don’t like carrying it from one floor to another which is why we have two of these.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Stick with what works I got my first Hoover Windtunnel bagged upright 11 years ago and it served me well so when I needed a new vacuum I chose the one that I knew I liked and would not disappoint me. I prefer the bagged vacuum because I'd rather have all that dust and dirt neatly contained and it's cheaper than replacing filters or the hassle of washing them for the bagless kind of vacuum. My old vacuum still works and I keep it in the basement to vacuum down there, easier than dragging it up and down the stairs everytime. Compared to other vacuums, especially these new bagless ones, the price for this one is very reasonable and I trust the Hoover brand for durability and quality. It is heavy but it has the self-propelled feature and so that isn't an issue. A longer hose for the attachments would be my only suggestion to Hoover if they wished to improve the model.
