I think this switch will only operate a fan with a built-in light independently Due to the ceiling fan having a module in it. An exhaust fan probably won’t have that option

I got two of these wall mount ceiling fan remotes so I could get rid of the pull chains on the two Hunter Parmer fans in my living room. The wired connection plus batteries is a bit odd but these remotes work perfectly. Installation was as quick as putting in a light switch.

I recently installed 2 Hunter Contempo fans. They're 5xxxx series models, which means the remote is digitally paired rather than by dipswitch matching. Given the size of the remote, I knew we'd NOT find it when we needed it so I wanted a wall control, as well. The switch boxes originally held 2 switches - one for the light and one for the fan. So I bought two sets of those snap-together switchplates - one side for decora switches and the other being a blank. (See photo) Here's the important piece more me: I was able to pair this remote with the receiver that came with the fans. I didn't find any instructions specifically about this online, but there were remote-pairing references that were close enough that I could work out the following: 1. Turn off the fan. 2. Put batteries in the wall control 3. Turn on the fan. 4. Within 3 minutes, press the light-on button and the fan-on button on the wall control and hold them until the light blinks. The wall unit is now paired, and will work alongside the original remote. The wall remote does NOT have to be hardwired to work, as I did the above before installing it in the wall. The hardwiring is about enabling the power button on the bottom of the unit. If you leave a regular switch controlling power to the fan, then this could function as a wall-mounted, battery-powered remote. As is often the case, I paid twice what I needed to because I only needed the transmitter and not the receiver, but they don't sell them separately. I'd give it five stars if I could have bought just the control unit. Nevertheless, I can now turn on the light when I walk into the room, rather than searching in the dark for the remote. And that was the goal.

New construction, in two bedrooms electrical lighting was installed without ceiling fans or ability to control speed without chain when a fan would be installed. Learned 14/2 vs 14/3 wiring , (14/3 has extra wire to control a fan). The Hunter wall switch enabled using the fan without chain pulls and diming of light with proper bulb.

I was eager to write the review about this Hunter In-wall Ceiling Fan Remote because there seems to be a great deal of confusion and misinformation. Here are two important points. - First off, the in-wall controller DOES require hard-wiring to your electrical. There are two black wires and a green ground wire. It's a bit unusual but it also requires (and includes) two AAA batteries. Both hard-wiring and the batteries are needed for this switch to work. - Second, the controller works with the included receiver. You cannot install just the controller and use it with a receiver from another remote. It's basically a package deal that can be used on many different brands of fans but you have to use both the controller and receiver. I purchased two of these switches and plan to get two more. They were easy to install and have worked without any issues thus far. The in-wall controller is actually pretty slim which should help those with shallow electrical boxes. The receiver portion is about the same size as any other receiver. That simply means the fit depends on the fan. The description does not mention it by this controller has an LED that illuminates when you press the fan or light controls. You can control the fan and light separately or turn them both on/off by using the master power button at the bottom of the controller. One last thing to mention is that I installed one of these switches on a Hunter Apache Fan. It's a Apple Homekit enabled fan that has the receiver hardware installed inside the fans hardware. For that install, I only used the controller. Since they are both Hunter brand, the controller from this unit synced with the receiver of the Apache fan. I checked with Hunter Customer Care before buying it.
