Questions & Answers

Can you cut 1" schedule 80 PVC pipe with this?

I'm working on a one time irrigation project with 1" schedule 80 PVC pipe. I know schedule 80 is thicker, so can I use this? I need to make relatively clean and square cuts before I use my chamfering / deburring tool (or whatever you call it) to smooth the edges out before cementing everything together.
Asked by: Ryan
Schedule 80 might be too much for this, look into a special cutter or a saw.

Cutting PVC pipe with a hacksaw or power saw is slow, sloppy results and messy, little bits of PVC everywhere. Enter this thing. You bring the tool to the pipe, not the other way around. I've used it on 1.5" and 3/4" sch 40 PVC, it takes only a few seconds to cut through, and result is an end that is as clean as a factory cut with absolutely no mess. No deformation on the end of either pipe. Cutting 1.5" takes a little effort at first, but can't complain. I've got a few jobs with various PVC pipe sizes to cut and was dreading doing it the old way, not anymore. Highly recommend this!

The price is good, so that's probably acceptable for a homeowner. If you are going to cut a lot of pipe, a higher quality tool would probably be worth the money.

I have 3 PVC cutters, sadly none were big enough to make the one cut I needed. I was hoping to get an inexpensive tool (10 bucks or so) but, alas, no such animal existed. I was forced to spend almost 3 times that amount. I had considered return it after my one cut was measured and made, because the chance of me needing to cut 2 inch PVC again, is slim. However, this monster cut through it like butter! I was so impressed that I'm tossing my old ones and keeping "Brutus"! (I like to name my favorite tools! So much easier to cut with then all of my smaller ones were. Almost no strength needed at all!! So, spend the money, you won't be sorry!

In the past I had always cut pipe with a saw and then cleaned out the burrs. This is much easier to use. It cut clean without burrs. The ratcheting effort was smooth. The cutter fit into tight places which didn't require a bunch of digging around the pipe that needed to be cut. I used the cutter to cut out old sprinkler heads so that I could move them to new locations so that the lawn would be watered completely.

As you approach the maximum diameter of pipe requiring cutting, the worse the tool works. I achieved much better results with a Dremel Max. The Dremel cut through the 2" PVC pipe smoothly and quickly. Additionally, the Dremel left a near perfect cut. I'm not fooling with one of these ratcheting cutters any more unless I intend to use it for smaller pipe diameters.

So, you had to replace the whole thing. You can replace blade on this - which is carried in store. Also, when you expand handles, jaw comes to fully open via spring action. Blade is not straight but had engineered shape that cuts better.

However, since then, we have bought six more because it works so well, it makes the perfect gift! It cuts through PVC pipe like butter, even for someone with arthritis like me. Heavy duty power cables, no problem. Incredible product for the money.

Does not cut pvc straight regardless of size, you will get a angle even when started straight. the blade pulls to one side mid-cut. strength required is not an issue (at least at 3/4 inch pvc), just doesn't cut straight. Don't recommend.
