The grabber end of the appliance is appx. 3/8" in diameter... The claws at rest {closed} measures appx, 7/8" in diameter the claws open to max. measures appx 1 1/2" in diameter.. In other words, you can stick the end in a hole as small as 7/8" dia., but the claws will not have any room to open.

A great tool which saved me from tearing apart tub drain pipes. I made the mistake of buying and using a $3 zip-it drain cleaning tool to remove hair in the tub drain. The plastic broke in half using moderate force. While it was tricky, I was successful in retrieving the broken pieces from the tub drain. I will never buy another zip-it drain cleaning tool. Don’t be fooled by the positive reviews, the zip-it drain cleaning tool is absolute junk.

Essential and Ingenious Tool for the Workshop!
As we all know, that last screw, nut, washer, or bolt for that new item you are assembling always happens to fall in the deepest, darkest corner of your workshop floor. This is the essential tool for retrieving that lost part! Before getting this tool, I had to go get a flashlight and use my old mechanical pick up tool. With one item in each hand, it was awkward! Now, I can use just one hand to reach thanks to the nice and bright self-actuating LED light in the tip of this device. It comes right on when you press the very comfortable plunger mechanism (see picture). The light runs on three LR41 button batteries (included), and as the picture shows, it is easy to replace the batteries. This tool is a must-have for everyone's workshop. I also have to highlight the manufacturer's "guaranteed forever" warranty. I highly recommend this 24 inch lighted mechanical gripping pick up tool.

Dropped items found
All of us have dropped a screw, nut, washer and it has rolled under something. Get out the flashlight and the pickup. Can't line up the flashlight and get the claw on the item? End up pushing it further under whatever it rolled under. Now: put this under the something. Push the button slightly and the light goes on. Wave the lighted end with the other hand to see where what you have dropped is. Push the button harder and the claw opens to grab what you dropped. Easy and simple. I wanted to know how strong the claw was so I tried a piece of wood that would fit in the claw. Picked it up and held it securely. I also tried a "medium flat rate box" (USPS description of size). Picked it up an held it securely also.

This product did its job for what I needed. I dropped something down the drain in the bathroom sink, however, the fingers were a little weak and bent. I did manage to get what I dropped out. The light that was on the end was super helpful.
