Can I use the back as a sledge head with a hammer?

Asked by Chris March 4, 2018

You could possibly, but I would recommend using a splitting wedge, or splitting grenade. This axe is Great for logs up to 12" or so. Plus it all depends on the type of wood you are splitting. I was using it to split green Cherrywood.

Is there a version with the wood handle?

There is not in this specific product. However Home depot does have a "Husky" brand with a wooden handle.

Get something better
Bought this 2 years ago. It worked okay at splitting smaller stuff. It just broke and I have the 3.5 Michigan axe by husky and it broke too. My dad still has mauls and splitting axes from the 70s that are still fine through decades of abuse. The heads are just not built to last.

Does exactly what it should
Though I haven’t split wood in almost 20 years, I quickly became accustomed to this splitting tool. The handle, at 34” is just long enough for excellent leverage, but more wieldy than others with 36” and generates more force on the swing than tools with 28” handles. The plastic handle has an excellent rubbery grip and its cross-section indexes well in the hand. It absorbs shock well but does bend somewhat when the head gets stuck in a knot or particularly ornery piece of wood. Also, though NO splitting tool‘s handle will remain unscathed near the head since incomplete splits are impossible to avoid, and since I’ve gotten pretty good with the tool, there is no hint of damage to this axe. Speaking of the axe head, the 4-lb weight is enough to effectively split 18” or so rounds of ash wood, but not as brutally - on the wood or on your body as an 8-lb maul. The lighter mass makes it much more accurate than a maul for the majority of users, an important trait when an inch can make the difference between an easy split and a difficult extraction. So far, this splitting axe has been superlative, and a fantastic value, especially when backed by a lifetime warranty. For those who have complained about breakage, please see my photo. All the wood was split by this tool. If you break it, that is not the tool’s fault.

Was pleasently surprized
I bought this splitter as a cheaper alternative to the more expensive splitting axes. I was very surprized at how well is worked. i split some pretty big log about 16" in dia. and 20" high. and it took a some good stikes but it split it. I also had a stump cut off of some walnut and man that wood is hard but again a some good strikes and it split it. the only thing i dont like is the vibration some time from the fiberglass, and the rubberized handle deffinatly need to wear gloves with this cause it rubs so bad i got a blister on my hand. But a good buy overall

Just picked this splitting maul/axe today and used it on a bunch of Russian Elm. So far so good. Axes take a lot of abuse, and no handle will take repeated beating of the handle getting hit instead of the axe. It will happen even to the best axe men/women. My wife has yet to use it, but it is two pounds lighter than our other maul. That maul's head became separated from the fiberglass handle after many years of use and beat downs!!

Does the job
Okay so i have had this axe for a couple months now. After splitting on the first day, the handle pretty much exploded, exposing the fiberglass thats holding it together. ( See picture ) . Pretty dissapointing to be honest. Ive still continued to use it, and its still doing the job. This is a basic axe that gets the job done, but dont expect it to look pretty after the first swing.

This item appears to have been replaced with a 4 lbs version that now has a significantly less agressive splitting head than the one that came on the 4.5 lbs version. The 4.5 lbs version’s head attached to the handle using resin and was open at the top. I had the 4.5 lbs version and liked it at first but it did not last - failing before the second weekend of use. I was using mine pretty much exclusively as a wedge and driving it with a 4lbs Husky engineer hammer. This combination worked pretty well but the head eventually came off the handle when the resin began to shatter. A large open crack on the butt end of the head where I had been striking it also developed. I had planned to return it for another but I went to 2 stores and found that they must have pulled the old stock and replaced them with the 4lbs version that - while it doesn’t have the agressive splitter head - does not appear to have the same design flaws that led to this failure. Was refunded my purchase price instead.

Works well but can't take much abuse
I chopped up a few small logs with an axe growing up, but never actually split logs until today, so the fact that this thing worked on my first try is pretty awesome. I'd like to give it 5 stars just for that but after only splitting five semi-green logs of acacia, the plastic shell around the head of the handle has already lost a chunk and looks beat up. I'm guessing I overshot the center of the log and caught the hard seasoned outer edge. I've come to expect more from the Husky brand since I've beaten up my other Husky tools over the years and they're all in very good shape. Given how much damage I've already caused on day one, I doubt it'll last that long.
