Questions & Answers

can you add casters to the unit?

Asked by: gr07
The correct answer is NO. I added 4" industrial casters and, as others have noted the thin metal with holes in the feet is not up to the task. I had the shelves assembled with nothing on them and the metal failed and the shelves tipped. Maybe with sturdy platforms the answer would be different but learn from my mistake!

I'am confused and hope to find some help here. My units tie channel pieces that connect to the beams have no bolts or screws to secure them. Once the tab slides into the holes on either side of the beams there is a screw hole on top of that to secure them together...however no screws. In the directions there isnt a step listed to secure these two pieces together. I was thinking there would be extra push clips like the ones used to to secure the frame but there wasnt...When I watched a youtube video with this model the tie channels looked different than mine..
Asked by: Cait
The old Husky shelving unit came with screws and nuts as well as the push clips. The plastic push clips were used to keep the shelf brackets from popping up, which I also agree is not likely to happen since they are pressure fit using a rubber mallet. However, I had extra hardware left over from the original Husky shelf that I used to secure the cross braces for the new shelving unit. I do recommend using screws and nuts to secure those brackets (channels) for this updated shelf because they are warped and some bent. Using the screws and nuts brings the metal surfaces together and gives incredible strength to the entire unit. When the metal surfaces are compressed into each other, this is where the strength factor and rigidity increases greatly. The plastic clips I did not use. If I buy another unit, I will definitely buy the extra hardware to secure the cross brackets. So, there is no hardware anymore with this unit except the plastic push pins but the unit is much stronger with the addition of 3 cross braces per shelf compared to the original unit that came with only one per shelf. One other additional problem with mine was that the unit was out of square. When it came time to put the screws into the braces the holes where not aligned. I used 30" bar clamps I already had handy to tightened them across both cross beams to draw them together and bring the holes in the braces into alignment. Drop the screw in, tightened the nut, and took the bar clamps off and all was well.

Can this fit in a car to transport

Asked by: Vince
It fit in my Honda Pilot (midsize SUV) with the seats down. You need a second person to load and unload it, unless you fell like killing yourself and scraping your car. Hauling in a pickup would make it much easier.

It is of residential garage quality - certainly not near commercial. The design is good, as is the packaging (though neither are great). The steel thickness is decent. The design is very good, though it could be better. I would ask the manufacturer to have plastic/rubber caps for the top of the uprights. They are sharp and could scrape me or whatever I'm storing on the top shelf. I also don't love the mesh racking. It fits in a "sill" on the cross beams. I would have preferred that it overlap with a 90 degree wrap on the front and back, and that its gauge be thicker. Nothing on this unit is super, but it will last for many, many years and it serves its purpose very well in my garage. Its not a budget unit, but more of a mid-tier quality. It does meet my expectations, but for a private label brand (Husky) owned by Home Depot I expected better, as I am typically significantly impressed by the design and value of Husky products (of which I own many).

I have similar shelving that took 4 times longer to assemble due to fiddly nuts and bolts. If you are looking at eBay or elsewhere, factor this in as it pays for itself the first time you assemble, let alone anytime you need to move the shelving. I would use zip ties instead of the provided plastic push clips. Get the thickets possible for the hole, 4-5mm / .2" wide. The plastic push clips are flimsy (see instruction assembly manual). If you are going to load up the shelves, the zip ties will also allow you to tie in the tie channel into the beams that support the shelving which seem to bow a fraction outward. TRANSPORT: Weigh 200 lbs, factor this in for pickup as it currently cannot be found anywhere on the website. If you don't have a pickup truck, hire a truck from home depot. 2 person job for unloading. Saving $500 a year on self storage costs when I went from a 15'x10' to a 10'x10' unit.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from I have both the original version of this rack and now the updated one. The good thing about this ... I have both the original version of this rack and now the updated one. The good thing about this new one is that it has 3 cross braces to support the wire racks but this set does not come with screws or nuts to fasten them which is necessary in my opinion. It gives rigidity and strength to the whole unit. The plastic clips don't do much, especially considering that the hardware secures the warped braces better than a plastic clip can do and nothing really lines up that well. The unit is out of square. Some more than others. If you work carefully installing the first shelf brackets from the bottom up and try to force that first set into square, the rest of the unit will work ok. I had to us a bar clamp to bring the long braces in closer in to instal the cross braces. It didn't take much force at all but without doing that, there's no way the holes on the cross braces would line up with the holes on the long braces. Long story short, if you are not a handy person or one who does not have experience in the trades or working with structural stuff that needs a little improvement, do not buy this unit. With my experience as a welder and fabricator, I was able to take a unit that is basically out of square and make it work. If you can do that, it's a great shelf for the money, and the wire racks will fit correctly. I do recommend buying your own hardware though. Use 3/8-1/2" long truss head or pan head machine screws 1/4-20 threads and accompanying nuts. You may want to get lock nuts instead of regular nuts if the unit is going to experience a lot of wear and tear or constant banging or vibrations. There are a total of 24 holes in this unit that require hardware. You can still use the black push clips to hold the long shelf braces from popping up on the vertical trusses which I doubt would happen but for peace of mind I suppose.

The top end and center part of one upright post was bent slightly, and two of the wire shelves were badly bent, requiring some work with a rubber mallet on a piece of plywood to straighten them. The unit comes with small plastic pegs that secure the parts together, but was short 7 pegs. All of the wire shelves had paint chipped of in several places.

I purchased 4 of these shelving units(exact model and sku #) last month after the box said it was an expandable system. I came back this month to purchase 2 more and found that they are now a 6,000lb unit vs the 8,000lb units I got just last month. Again this is the exact same model and number as before but the product is now different(Cheaper!). Don't be fooled by this bait and switch. Its still a $200 shelf but only rated for 75% of the work. By comparison all pieces are thinner and welds are smaller. I luckily had the old boxes still so I can prove the change since now all the websites and store say the new rating. So now I am stuck with 4 expensive and heavy shelving units that I can no longer expand upon as advertised. If your buying them for the first time this may not matter, at least until you ho to buy more and find they are now only 4,000lb units and the construction even flimsier and most importantly non matching for expansion of your current system. Please see images below for comparison.

There are serious QA issues with their new model of shelving. We got two shelves and both of them were defective and inoperable. Details as follows: I bought one set and after assembling the second set of horizontal arms to give it rigidity, the thing suddenly teetered. It would not rest flat. I measured the legs and they weren't even. There was a slight cant in them. So I returned that set and got another set. Thankfully, this one assembled perfectly flat. We installed all the plastic pins noticed the cross-members looked slightly crooked. Went to put the wire shelving on and it wouldn't go on because the shelves were not square. It measured 77" across, as expected. However, one side of the shelf was 23.25" deep and one was 23" deep. I measured the inside diagonals for square and lo and behold, one diagonal was 77.5" and the other 74.5" Now I have to go back to Home Depot to return these AGAIN. This has been a serious waste of my weekend. I strongly recommend spending the extra money and getting the Gladiator or Stanley instead. Your time and sanity is worth the extra $40.

Very nice shelving ... however; Purchased one of these shelving racks while setting up my garage shop. It has great potential, however I am only giving it 2 stars because of problems I encountered. One main problem was one of the uprights had most all of the weld joints were broken. I do not know if the guy with the MIG gun was new at the job or he put this one together early Monday morning. I will have to go back and TIG all of the broken welds at a later time, probably adding some gussets just to be safe. The other thing is there are no shelves sold separately like with the 78" version. I purchased 2 ea. of the 78" version shelves and made my own supports which should work fine for what I have planned for them. Another slight problem was trying to find the actual manufacturer since Home Depot could not answer any of my questions. Finally after some searching, I did find the manufacturer and emailed them my problems. Took a day for a reply and nothing settled. Overall I would recommend this product ... but ... keep in mind some of the problems I had.
