Questions & Answers

can you add casters to the unit?

Asked by: gr07
The correct answer is NO. I added 4" industrial casters and, as others have noted the thin metal with holes in the feet is not up to the task. I had the shelves assembled with nothing on them and the metal failed and the shelves tipped. Maybe with sturdy platforms the answer would be different but learn from my mistake!

I'am confused and hope to find some help here. My units tie channel pieces that connect to the beams have no bolts or screws to secure them. Once the tab slides into the holes on either side of the beams there is a screw hole on top of that to secure them together...however no screws. In the directions there isnt a step listed to secure these two pieces together. I was thinking there would be extra push clips like the ones used to to secure the frame but there wasnt...When I watched a youtube video with this model the tie channels looked different than mine..

Screws are not necessary. Have had mine up for a few years no problems!

Do you have to anchor to the wall? Are these a tip hazard?
Asked by: justasking
We put all our heavy stuff on the bottom shelf such as paint, grout, tile, etc, but STILL anchor it to the wall. Use a flat rope like fabric or even a small chain and screw it to a stud in the wall toward the top. If you aren't in an earthquake prone state then maybe not, but I'd still do it.

D Steel Garage Storage Shelving Unit The shelving itself is fine. Very strong, can be bolted together, many shelf height options, etc. Some individual pieces had minor bends which I straightened with little effort. The problem is with the absolutely dreadful shipping company (ESPY). They had our two shelving units for 3 weeks before delivering them. Gave us a delivery date, but missed it. Gave us another date and missed that one. We complained to the Home Depot customer service line (twice) and they did their best. Was finally delivered, but one of the end frame pieces on one unit had been ruined (by a fork lift?) -- we called Husky, who (with a photo and the receipt) shipped a new frame piece which arrived in only three days. In spite of our problems, unless you have a truck or Suburban, getting it shipped is probably the best option. One star off for having Espy involved at all. There has to be a more reliable shipper.

I was originally looking for the Dewalt racks which were out of stock and really couldn't justify spending $290+ per rack for only a 72"w shelf when I can get these 96"w for $229. After reading the reviews that mentioned damaged or bent pieces I made sure to inspect them prior to loading. Shout out to Timothy and Phillip at the Spring Hill,TN store for fork lifting the pallet down and out to my truck and opening each box so I could make sure all was good. Got them home and installed by myself as they really are easy enough for one person to do it. Very strong sturdy racks. There is a slight gap between the wire deck and 3 cross support beams which is not a big deal if you are mainly putting storage tubs like I was but on one shelf where I had more weight I ran a couple strips of wood the length of the shelf to bridge the gap and prevent the deck from having any sag. Also, since I was mainly storing sealed plastic tubs I opted to raise the bottom shelf up which turns this into a 6-tier unit.Very happy with my purchase.

I bought 2 shelf units and when I went to put them together the 1st unit was fine. But the 2nd unit was damaged. This was do to the fact that the guy at Home depot told me and the guy that went with me to load an unload them, that he tried to load them on a flatbed cart by him self. When I went back to return the one shelf unit the manager really didn't care at all. The shelf units are a great quality and value. The guy I talked to said he was the Manager and it seemed like he couldn’t care less. The 1st shelf unit was a good quality product. The issue was with the Home Depot so called manager not caring about how the Home Depot employee had to load the units on a flatbed or with What i had to go through to load and unload the shelf units 2 times. I did get a 2nd shelf unit and have had them for 3 weeks now. I would recommend the shelf units. The so called manager needs some customer service training.

Fraudulent at worst and false advertising at best that HD and Husky (aka Edsal) is still using the same model number and reviews from the old unit for this far inferior newer unit. I bought one of these in late 2017 early 2018 and it was great, solid construction, very stable, no finish issues. Fast forward to yesterday, March 31, 2019 when I bought and put together a new unit.... The weight capacity has decreased from 2000 lbs/shelf to 1500 lbs/shelf as the metal is much thinner ( feels like I could bend some of it by hand) which makes the whole unit much less sturdy (I have my old and new one side by side so it’s an easy comparison). The finish is much thinner and almost every piece right out of the box had many rust spots. I looked at my old unit and no rust and has a nice thick finish. The shelving grates on the new one are also not sized correctly as they leave about an inch gap on each side. Why? I have no idea because the old unit is flush to the edges. To top it all off, I actually paid more for this unit than I did the old one. Really disappointing purchase. If you want to sell an inferior model that’s fine, just change the model number and stop using reviews from the old product, it’s dishonest. If I could return it I would but I have a new baby on the way and neither have the time or energy to lug this back to the store.

I purchased two of these units a month ago to mount side by side for an effective shelf depth of 4'. I wanted to close out a rented storage unit I had for 5 years at $110/month (you do the math). I figured everything in the storage unit would fit on the two Husky storage shelves and would pay for itself in 3 months. Worked out great! These shelves are extremely strong and super easy to assembly. Me and my wife had these assembled in about 30 minutes. Nice thing is no bolts or tools needed. Everything slip interlocks together and is very stable. I extremely pleased with my purchase and only wish I thought of this sooner. I highly recommend this product.

There are serious QA issues with their new model of shelving. We got two shelves and both of them were defective and inoperable. Details as follows: I bought one set and after assembling the second set of horizontal arms to give it rigidity, the thing suddenly teetered. It would not rest flat. I measured the legs and they weren't even. There was a slight cant in them. So I returned that set and got another set. Thankfully, this one assembled perfectly flat. We installed all the plastic pins noticed the cross-members looked slightly crooked. Went to put the wire shelving on and it wouldn't go on because the shelves were not square. It measured 77" across, as expected. However, one side of the shelf was 23.25" deep and one was 23" deep. I measured the inside diagonals for square and lo and behold, one diagonal was 77.5" and the other 74.5" Now I have to go back to Home Depot to return these AGAIN. This has been a serious waste of my weekend. I strongly recommend spending the extra money and getting the Gladiator or Stanley instead. Your time and sanity is worth the extra $40.

For as sturdy as it is I thought for sure it would take a couple of hours to put it together but actually it was the easiest shelf I have ever assembled. It took me right at thirty minutes to finish. There is one thing I don't understand though, they give you 16 push pins for the shelves (4 for each shelf) but none for the center supports, eventhough there are holes for them. I thought maybe they were missing but then realized they don't come with them. So when you assemble them they are loose. I guess it doesn't really matter though because once you start filling the shelves with stuff they don't move. I thought about buying some for it but you don't really need them. I filled every shelf to the max. Now time to build another one. Might even get a third one. Best shelf I own!!!

I had to return both purchases. Very dissapointing, I spent the entire day unpacking & repacking these racks, and then driving back and forth to HD to get my money back. It's too bad, because it looked like it would be a nice sturdy unit for my garage.
