Questions & Answers

can you add casters to the unit?

Asked by: gr07
The correct answer is NO. I added 4" industrial casters and, as others have noted the thin metal with holes in the feet is not up to the task. I had the shelves assembled with nothing on them and the metal failed and the shelves tipped. Maybe with sturdy platforms the answer would be different but learn from my mistake!

I'am confused and hope to find some help here. My units tie channel pieces that connect to the beams have no bolts or screws to secure them. Once the tab slides into the holes on either side of the beams there is a screw hole on top of that to secure them together...however no screws. In the directions there isnt a step listed to secure these two pieces together. I was thinking there would be extra push clips like the ones used to to secure the frame but there wasnt...When I watched a youtube video with this model the tie channels looked different than mine..
Asked by: Cait
The old Husky shelving unit came with screws and nuts as well as the push clips. The plastic push clips were used to keep the shelf brackets from popping up, which I also agree is not likely to happen since they are pressure fit using a rubber mallet. However, I had extra hardware left over from the original Husky shelf that I used to secure the cross braces for the new shelving unit. I do recommend using screws and nuts to secure those brackets (channels) for this updated shelf because they are warped and some bent. Using the screws and nuts brings the metal surfaces together and gives incredible strength to the entire unit. When the metal surfaces are compressed into each other, this is where the strength factor and rigidity increases greatly. The plastic clips I did not use. If I buy another unit, I will definitely buy the extra hardware to secure the cross brackets. So, there is no hardware anymore with this unit except the plastic push pins but the unit is much stronger with the addition of 3 cross braces per shelf compared to the original unit that came with only one per shelf. One other additional problem with mine was that the unit was out of square. When it came time to put the screws into the braces the holes where not aligned. I used 30" bar clamps I already had handy to tightened them across both cross beams to draw them together and bring the holes in the braces into alignment. Drop the screw in, tightened the nut, and took the bar clamps off and all was well.

Can this fit in a car to transport

Asked by: Vince
It fit in my Honda Pilot (midsize SUV) with the seats down. You need a second person to load and unload it, unless you fell like killing yourself and scraping your car. Hauling in a pickup would make it much easier.

D Steel Garage Storage Shelving Unit The shelving itself is fine. Very strong, can be bolted together, many shelf height options, etc. Some individual pieces had minor bends which I straightened with little effort. The problem is with the absolutely dreadful shipping company (ESPY). They had our two shelving units for 3 weeks before delivering them. Gave us a delivery date, but missed it. Gave us another date and missed that one. We complained to the Home Depot customer service line (twice) and they did their best. Was finally delivered, but one of the end frame pieces on one unit had been ruined (by a fork lift?) -- we called Husky, who (with a photo and the receipt) shipped a new frame piece which arrived in only three days. In spite of our problems, unless you have a truck or Suburban, getting it shipped is probably the best option. One star off for having Espy involved at all. There has to be a more reliable shipper.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Not worthy of Husky branding Decent shelves with a few issues that totally destroys the experience. The cross-member require plastic keepers to hold them inplace and the keepers are so cheap and poorly engineered. I used metal auto body clips and screws to hold them in place because the plastic keepers were so small and under engineered for a “heavy-duty” description. There is also not enough support on the sides of each wire shelf and they sag despite being double reinforced. There is just no supporting brace under the sides to support loads. These shelves are not inexpensive either, I should have returned it but I was half way through a garage project and had to eat the cost and have a substandard solution “globally sourced” and boxed here I bet. I do not recommend

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Own it for 2 hours and 42 minutes... The rack is very simple to put together but poorly manufactured. Looking down the beams you’ll find the edges of the metal to be wavy/bent. I put two beams on the very bottom holes and found that the wire mesh was too wide and would not sit in the grooves. I tried another wire mesh and got the same result. So I measured the side pieces that the beams hook into and found the following: Bottom: 23 7/8”, Middle: 24 1/8”, Top: 23 7/8”. The wire mesh fit in the middle (24 1/8”) of the rack (using a rubber mallet). The bottom and top parts of the rack were too close together to put the wire mesh in. I returned it to the store and a Home Depot associate helped me open another box and found different measurement on the side pieces again. That is when the Home Depot associate told me that a lot of these get returned… I’m not saying not to buy this product but if you run into trouble get your tape measure out. This product also weighs 150 lbs. which isn't that easy to return.

I actually bought two units for my garage. Assembly was easy and straightforward by one person (me) with the exception of the two screws for each of the beam spanners. These were a bit tough to install but nothing beyond a DIY-er's capabilities. These shelves are manufactured by Edsal and are also available at Lowe's, under the Edsal brand, and at Sam's, under the Muscle Rack brand. Lowe's carries additional parts and pieces by the way. Home Depot does not. I would like to point out that the staff at Home Depot happily helped load these onto a cart and moved them to the checkout counter for me before loading them into my truck bed. This was a great help due to the weight of each box. I added a 2'x4' peg board to the side of one of the units for additional functionality and will very likely by another unit or two.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Extreme Poor Quality, Welds Broke off in 2/5 Boxes I bought five racks to organize my garage, upon opening the first box, I noticed that it the welds on the uprights were disconnected, upon a closer look there was no fusion whatsoever between the two pieces, it was a cold weld joint. Whoever was welding had no idea how to run correctly the welding machine, nor were they tested obviously as part of quality control. The break was so clean you cant even tell they were welded. This was the situation in 2 out of the five boxes I purchased. Also there was a newer version with tooless assembly, however 2 out of five boxes I purchased did not have it and needed install bolts and nuts. With the awkward positioning for the fasteners, it definitely took a lot more time

The shelving was delivered by truck for which I paid $65, a fair price since it was very heavy and I could not have lifted it. However, when I opened the box, one of the stanchions was damaged and bent, caused by a forklift intrusion when it was lifted. I could not see the damage until after the driver left and after I opened the box (it looked only like a tear in the outer box). I needed to hammer, bend and cajole the unit into place, causing a somewhat uneven look. The steel deck onto which I put the equipment I wanted stored did not sit flush without cajoling and bending. This damage added an extra 90 minutes to the install which took about 4 hours to complete by myself. I purchased two other similar, but smaller units at the same time, and they took 60-90 minutes to install. Overall satisfied, but I would have liked Home Depot to pick up and take back what I had purchased and deliver a new one fully assembled. This would have been rated 4.5 if not for the bent equipment.

I purchased this product to provide additional storage along the sides of my garage. I must say that I got higher quality than I expected. + VERY easy to assemble. from taking the box out of my truck to having a fully assembled unit took under an hour and I was able to do it by myself (other than unloading, the box is fairly heavy/large). + The unit is sturdy and stable, and only gets more-so as it's loaded. + The height lets it fit just under my garage door frame, so i'm not restricted on where I can place it (reduces me to about 18" usable space on the top shelf, but I *really* wanted the 24inch depth for the other shelves). + The unit can be expanded, home depot sells the uprights and shelves for husky/edsal separately. so you don't have to waste those couple inches of space having a double set of uprights next to one another. it's really an excellent design, reminiscent of warehouse type shelves scaled down to a size that's usable/functional in any garage.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Overall dissapointing I needed shelves to hold a 75 gallon fish tank. These looked perfect. But, I am completely leery about the max rating per shelf. 2,000 pounds is way way did I say way over rated!! It is a lot about distribution. After filling a 75 gallon tank 1/2 full of water I got the bends (not the diving bends!). The steel mesh shelves are really minimal. Cheap and not strong in my opinion. There are not enough supports from side to side for me. 1 simply doesn't cut it! Even with tank directly over the middle support and extending to the very end. For me I need to go buy additional supports and or completely new shelves to hold the weight. Just beware that putting 1,000 pounds on any one of these shelves other than the bottom maybe!! is asking for trouble, based on my experience. Price is right but 2,000 pounds per shelf seriously!? Who is going to pay for my cracked 75 gallon fish tank when the shelf buckles? I am way under 1,500 pounds and see buckling under the stress!! ARG! More money is needed to be spent now... Frustrated.

While I cannot comment on the durability of this shelving unit, I can comment on the ease of assembly and the sturdiness. This unit took me about 15 minutes to assemble with NO tools at all, and it seems to be rock-solid and stable. I do plan to cover the mesh shelves with plywood, not due to lack of strength, but rather so things will slide off easier. I bought a Gladiator unit from a competitor, but I have not assembled it yet. I hope it is as nice. Why two different stores? I had gift cards for both stores.

The best part is that you can connect the shelves together. The problem I have found is that when you start connecting shelves together they leave you with extra legs. I have talked to multiple HD people trying to find replacement shelves so that I can use the extra legs, and not one could help me they all tell me to contact the manufacture. After lots of research and reading I finally found the shelve. I had bought this unit many years ago, well I moved and needed a new one so I have just gotten the same or close to it. The newer one seems abit thinner in the metal but for a great amount of storage space in a small garage I am just thrilled. New version is cheaper/thinner construction and only rated for 6000 lbs as a result (1 star) , no discounted price to reflect this move. Not the most simplest directions to follow, but once you have the basics down on the first level, the rest are a breeze. I tried to pick two undamaged boxes in the store but failed to see a small hole in one of the box bottoms and when I unpacked them, there was a very little bend in the wire shelf but not enough to not make it fit. Very heavy duty construction and solid. Have a strong friend to help load and unload. I bought 2, will probably buy 2 more soon.

Probably would be better to replace with a self tapping screw. Note: you cannot pickup on the shelf to move it, the bracket comes right out! The wire shelf says it can hold 1500# per shelf, but we shall see. May put wood over the wire shelf, small items can easily fall through, and its hard for quart oil containers to stand up.

Not sure if I could lift the box, I didn't try, it's very heavy. I just maneuvered it in and out of the truck and broke the box down to move and assemble it. Couple pieces were slightly off but still fitted. Shelves don't sag under weight and had double wire in a couple sections for extra strength. I put two shelf units together with one center post. Did exactly what I needed.

I recently built a new home and three car garage that needed storage shelves. I originally was going to use the vinyl shelves you mount to the vertical brackets on a wall but the cost for the running feet I needed was a bit high and I could never move the shelves to another spot if needed. I decided to buy 4 of the Husky Brand 90 X 90" shelves for garage and home storage. Overall they are pretty nice. Requires no hardware, or hours of time to set up, You simply take the side rt andf lft vertical rails and pound the shelf support beams down into place with rubber hammer, Put the 3 cross center beam on and slide on the metal shelf bottom which fits down into a groove on the shelf supports. If you buy 2 of these you can actually make 3 full 90" wide units By installing 3 shelves per 2 units and 4 shelves per third unit ( see attached Photo). I found installing 5 shelves onto one unit did not allow enough space for the larger storage tubs I use. The up right side post pieces allow you to add the cross shelf beams to either side of the upright side posts. These shelves hold a ton of weight they don't wobble either like other garage shelves normally do. Overall for around 250 dollars each I recommend these. The packages these came in are 90 plus inches long and very heavy so make sure you have some help loading them into your truck bed. I easily got all four into my ford F 150 with 6 foot box and tailgate down. The friendly Home depot staff used their forklift to load in all four containers I bought at the store. Overall Id give these a rating of 5 stars. And would buy again.

Only wish the wire racks had easy to use fasteners to attach to the shelf braces. The design is great and the one that arrived in good condition is a great addition to our garage. The shelves can be assembled in under 15 minutes and the frame is incredibly stout. The wire frame for the shelving is brilliant and allows for these shelves to be incredibly strong but still light enough for one person to maneuver and adjust when needed. The other shelving unit arrived in poor condition. Unfortunately, I didn't realize that the problem was widespread until after it was assembled. After it was assembled I was moving it and noticed that the powder coating seemed to feel like it was separating from the steel. Under closer inspection I realized I had a serious problem. The black powder-coating was "bubbling up" and flaking off. The frame is evidently rusting and the black coating is being separated as a result. I don't feel comfortable using it in this condition and I have doubts about it's structural integrity. Unfortunately for me, the piece is way to large for me to repack and return it anywhere so I'm now stuck with a large piece of rusting junk in my garage... Buyer beware!

Had to remove from my truck one piece at a time due to the weight of the cartons. No issues. Didn't need any tools although installing the bolts that hold the center shelf cross brace supports took longer than assembling the rest of the units. No clearance to drop bolt into mounting hole. The top of one upright was bent pretty badly. They are sturdy when assembled. The metal parts are locked in place with small plastic pegs, which this company is notorious for shorting you. I got two shelf units and one was short 7 pegs, and the other was short 6 pegs.

I purchased the Husky rack to help organize my basement, and it did not disappoint! Because of low ceilings, I wanted a solution that was wide and had met NSF standards. Within 10 minutes of opening the box, I had assembled the rack and loaded my contents. I only wish I had purchased two, but I will rectify that shortly!

However on the upright on the at the top it was bent. The paint was fine. I liked the shelf enough to buy a second one. Oddly enough it was bent and painted exactly as the first. Must be some poor quality control. Fourtnatly I didn't need that part of the shelf or I would of returned it.

I would have liked a few more of the pegs that keep the shelf brackets in their spot and one of my shelf brackets was bent but still very pleased with the product. In fact, after I assembled the first one and used tubs to organize; I bought a second one.

Shelves seem to bend slightly when placing boxes on that don’t sit on the rails. Added some 1/4” rough sided plywood to each and works like a charm can now place any size box or item anywhere on the shelf. Plus easier to roll items off especially for those that have wheels like vacuums.

Buy two, use extra horizontal beams to extend rack shelf to three positions by using both sides of upright. You definitely want a rubber mallet and big screw driver to torque beam if a little out of square.

Only purchased to get lager dimension than offered in the Dewalt Titan line. Those are great quality. Hope they make one larger than 71.5” soon. Hands down better unit!! I’m unhappy with husky
