Questions & Answers

Does this shelf have adjustable legs/feet, if my floor is uneven?

Asked by: Francis
No. The vertical elements have plastic covers on the ends for safety, but no means to make any fine adjustments for leveling.

Can this be easily assembled by one person?

Asked by: redgrange
Yes. Sit down on a folding chair. Put the two posts together with a short beam as directed. Add a long beam holding up the unattached end with the toe of your foot while you gently hammer the one end into the one post. (Make sure your dimples are properly oriented as well as the shelf support is where you want it (flat shelf or tray shelf). Then add the post to the end of the long beam and continue building the bottom box. Add the wire shelf and them decide where you want the next shelf to be. Count the holes up to where you want your bottom nipple of the beam to be and keep going. Takes longer the first time. Then you remember the process more.

What size is the box in which these are sold? (will it fit in the back of a small hatchback?)

Asked by: apw1
It sure will. It would also fit in your back seat. It is only as long as the shelves are.

Does this Shelving come with casters?

i purchased Casters with Bumper, SKU 100658236 and they don't seem to work with this shelving.
Asked by: 4frogs
no casters in the box. not sure I would use casters with this style shelving unit. If you want to move it around buy the wire grid style shelving.

78 in. H x 48 in. W x 24 in. D 5 Shelf Steel Unit is rated 4.4 out of 5 by 1409.

After a decade of this wood sitting around in various places, stacked against walls, and more, I finally got to organize the hardwood wood storage in my basement. I didn't realize just how much hardwood I had down here. I bought two sets of these shelves and stacked the (already dried) wood on them, and secured them to studs in the walls to prevent tipping (easily done with lag or construction bolts). They have worked wonderfully. There are other ways to store wood and have good access to it, but I'm quite happy with this solution. I can finally find and access the wood instead of just buying more when I have projects. In the photos, most of the wood is maple and cherry, so you can imagine how much weight this is holding. On the very top, I have two 8/4 x 16" x 10' maple slabs left from the flitch that produced most of the wood here, plus some thick walnut offcuts from a friend.

I bought 2 of these units a few months ago and for the price I have to say I am a bit disappointed in them. They were easy to assemble and the instructions were adequate. That is where the nice things about this product ends. After I got them assembled the wire shelve inserts started collapsing with only about 50 lbs on them. After some time looking it over I figured out what was the problem. The lip that supports the shelving is only about 3/8in long and I had put the shelving in upside down ( I am assuming because it was not in the instructions), So after flipping the shelving so the outer rod connected with the lip I went ahead and put everything back on the shelves. A week later I noticed the one of the shelves had collapsed again and this time it was because the framing had come apart. The framing is held together with some metal tabs that slide into a hole on the uprights. This is what makes them adjustable. I fixed it again and put everything back. I just had another shelf start to collapse again yesterday so I fixed it again. I am thinking about putting some wood shelving in place of the wire shelving like some of the other units have. Pros: Easy to assemble and fully adjustable. Cons: Falls apart easily, made from thin metal so it is flimsy, would not trust the weight rating, a bit pricy for what you get.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good price. Sturdy. Easy to build I picked up two of these. I had to organize a shed with a ton of small and medium items. The installation was simple. One tool. The rubber hammer. I stopped after the first one to load it up then built the second one. Then loaded that one. Two hours tops for all the loading and the building of the racks. I hear people complaining about the wire mesh shelves. I bought pre-cut wooden shelves right at the Depot. when I bought the units. They sit right on the wire shelf and are inside the lip of the shelf. Yes that add's to the cost, but without the wooden shelves I'd have hated the wire because of the holes. Now I have the wire shelf as extra support below the wood. Perfect marriage between the two. They are solid and sturdy. Mine will be there for a long time to come.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from WARNING: DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT - IT HAS CHANGED! I recently bought two additional Husky Steel 5 Shelf units 48W X 24D X 78T for $99.00 each. I had already purchased and assembled three identically-packaged units and was very pleased with how easily they went together. The problem with the most recent two units purchased on May 2, 2015 from the Home Depot in Glastonbury CT is that the couplings are crimped too tightly thereby not allowing the bottom and top corner posts to be connected. I emailed the company and they shipped out replacement couplings in a reasonable time period but the new couplings were identical to the ones that came with the unit and are not usable. This is a quality control issue. Keep in mind that if I had rated the first three units I would have given them five stars, like most reviews on this site. The coupling gap is wide enough for two pieces of copy paper to slide into, but not three pieces of paper and certainly not the metal corner posts even with the help of a hammer. DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT UNTIL THEY FIX THE QUALITY OF THE COUPLINGS. IF YOU DO BUY THE PRODUCT ASSEMBLE ONE TOP AND BOTTOM CORNER POST IN THE PARKING LOT BEFORE YOU BRING THE WHOLE UNIT HOME.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Strong and well built Simple installation with a rubber mallet. Took me and my son about 30 minutes to put it together. The heavy gauge wire shelves are well designed for carrying a lot of weight and sag very little when under load. The only downside is the spacing of the wire itself, (it's made of 4" x 2" rectangles). The spacing is so large that narrow items like a can of spray paint can't stand upright. Home Depot also sells 48" x 24" pre-cut plywood panels. I bought one sheet of the quarter inch plywood (Lauan Handypanel) for about 7 bucks and it dropped right onto my third shelf for my tall narrow items. It was a prefect fit, no trimming needed. See photo.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from great value, great price, durable and very easy to assemble (rubber mallet only). this is the 4t... great value, great price, durable and very easy to assemble (rubber mallet only). this is the 4th shelf purchased of this style, but this upgraded version is easier to put together. Had no issues and all the parts were in the box. new 4" width is perfect for household use. Placed 3 very heavy containers on the bottom. Upper shelves - place heavier items on the sides as the frame provides that "extra" weight support. Purchase - you wont be sorry.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Really? I see all these people complaining about the couplers to join the second tier risers for the self. How loose do you expect them to be? Do you want them to not be tight so that they slip down and your top section of shelving falls over? They are meant to be tight. I know it recommends using a rubber mallet which is fine for installing the actual shelf pieces, but how about trying a regular hammer with a small block of wood to hammer down the 4 couplings. My assembly went just fine. Only reason for 4 stars is due to the metal wire shelf inserts wanting to slip off the lip they sit on. To solve this issue just find a way use some ingenuity and fasten them to that lip to keep them from slipping off and having the shelf cave in and fall. I have no doubt they can hold at least 500-700lbs per shelf if you do this. I do however feel that the 1000lb per shelf is overrated, but again, possible if you fasten the shelf insert to all 4 shelf support sides.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Shelving Units I bought five of these shelving units to hold all sorts of items from everywhere in my house. I’m a 65 yr old woman, and I was able to put these together myself. I also purchased wide shallow clear plastic container boxes to store my things in. I am able to see what’s in them and most importantly the shallow containers allow me to easily lift and carry my seasonal treasures without difficulty.
