Questions & Answers

Does this shelf have adjustable legs/feet, if my floor is uneven?

Asked by: Francis
No. The vertical elements have plastic covers on the ends for safety, but no means to make any fine adjustments for leveling.

Can this be easily assembled by one person?

Asked by: redgrange
Yes. Sit down on a folding chair. Put the two posts together with a short beam as directed. Add a long beam holding up the unattached end with the toe of your foot while you gently hammer the one end into the one post. (Make sure your dimples are properly oriented as well as the shelf support is where you want it (flat shelf or tray shelf). Then add the post to the end of the long beam and continue building the bottom box. Add the wire shelf and them decide where you want the next shelf to be. Count the holes up to where you want your bottom nipple of the beam to be and keep going. Takes longer the first time. Then you remember the process more.

Does it matter which side of shelf faces upward?

Instructions say "flat side" of shelf should face upwards. How do you determine which side of the shelf is the "flat" side? Thanks.
Asked by: Dan
Shopman’s Answer was fully correct. Can they be installed either way? Yes. Are they stronger with the solid steel lip facing down than with the lip facing up? Yes.

What size is the box in which these are sold? (will it fit in the back of a small hatchback?)

Asked by: apw1
It sure will. It would also fit in your back seat. It is only as long as the shelves are.

I highly recommend it! Get a couple of these or even the bigger one. First time installing it and it only took me about 25 minutes. The only tool I needed was a knife to open the box and a rubber mallet. The rubber ends for the top and bottom barely secure to it. I'm sure the top ones will pop off sometime soon. The metal isn't extremely hard and can bend or get dented. It should still be perfectly fine but Husky does make another shelf that is a lot bigger and the metal seems a lot harder. If yours bends, just get pliers and bend it back.

I'm a contractor and needed a little extra storage space for seasonal equipment so I rented a storage unit. These shelves were on sale at the local store so I purchased four. Easy to put together, but NOT heavy duty. Shelves will pop up out of tear-drop lock with very little upward pressure; vertical and horizontal bracketry is pretty weak. I bought the larger Husky shelf a few years ago to use in my trailer for holding metal fasteners and loved it. If you are looking to get a truly heavy duty shelf, make sure you see it put together so you can feel the quality and thickness of the brackets. Don't be scared to spend the extra $50-$75 for a much better made shelving system.

After a decade of this wood sitting around in various places, stacked against walls, and more, I finally got to organize the hardwood wood storage in my basement. I didn't realize just how much hardwood I had down here. I bought two sets of these shelves and stacked the (already dried) wood on them, and secured them to studs in the walls to prevent tipping (easily done with lag or construction bolts). They have worked wonderfully. There are other ways to store wood and have good access to it, but I'm quite happy with this solution. I can finally find and access the wood instead of just buying more when I have projects. In the photos, most of the wood is maple and cherry, so you can imagine how much weight this is holding. On the very top, I have two 8/4 x 16" x 10' maple slabs left from the flitch that produced most of the wood here, plus some thick walnut offcuts from a friend.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good price. Sturdy. Easy to build I picked up two of these. I had to organize a shed with a ton of small and medium items. The installation was simple. One tool. The rubber hammer. I stopped after the first one to load it up then built the second one. Then loaded that one. Two hours tops for all the loading and the building of the racks. I hear people complaining about the wire mesh shelves. I bought pre-cut wooden shelves right at the Depot. when I bought the units. They sit right on the wire shelf and are inside the lip of the shelf. Yes that add's to the cost, but without the wooden shelves I'd have hated the wire because of the holes. Now I have the wire shelf as extra support below the wood. Perfect marriage between the two. They are solid and sturdy. Mine will be there for a long time to come.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from WARNING: DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT - IT HAS CHANGED! I recently bought two additional Husky Steel 5 Shelf units 48W X 24D X 78T for $99.00 each. I had already purchased and assembled three identically-packaged units and was very pleased with how easily they went together. The problem with the most recent two units purchased on May 2, 2015 from the Home Depot in Glastonbury CT is that the couplings are crimped too tightly thereby not allowing the bottom and top corner posts to be connected. I emailed the company and they shipped out replacement couplings in a reasonable time period but the new couplings were identical to the ones that came with the unit and are not usable. This is a quality control issue. Keep in mind that if I had rated the first three units I would have given them five stars, like most reviews on this site. The coupling gap is wide enough for two pieces of copy paper to slide into, but not three pieces of paper and certainly not the metal corner posts even with the help of a hammer. DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT UNTIL THEY FIX THE QUALITY OF THE COUPLINGS. IF YOU DO BUY THE PRODUCT ASSEMBLE ONE TOP AND BOTTOM CORNER POST IN THE PARKING LOT BEFORE YOU BRING THE WHOLE UNIT HOME.

I experienced the same problem others complained about, namely the unlocking of the horizontal support pieces upon moving the unit. I solved this by inserting 2 inch long 1/4-20 screws diagonally through the holes just above the tabs. I used lock nuts so the nuts wouldn't come off through vibration. I included a photo but do not know if it will reproduce. I am amazed that Husky doesn't furnish a locking fixture. It could be custom designed, would add little cost and solve the unlocking problem when the unit is moved.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Strong and well built Simple installation with a rubber mallet. Took me and my son about 30 minutes to put it together. The heavy gauge wire shelves are well designed for carrying a lot of weight and sag very little when under load. The only downside is the spacing of the wire itself, (it's made of 4" x 2" rectangles). The spacing is so large that narrow items like a can of spray paint can't stand upright. Home Depot also sells 48" x 24" pre-cut plywood panels. I bought one sheet of the quarter inch plywood (Lauan Handypanel) for about 7 bucks and it dropped right onto my third shelf for my tall narrow items. It was a prefect fit, no trimming needed. See photo.

The shelf is a pretty good idea - easy set up, very adjustable, seems very stable and strong. BUT, the flimsy wire shelves that actually hold the items you put on the shelf are laughably pathetic. This is the worst product I have bought in a very long time. Whoever is responsible for designing or choosing what materials to use should be fired. There is absolutely no possible way this shelf could ever hold more than 50 lbs in 1 spot on any given shelf on this unit. I know because I have had 2 units for 2 weeks and have had multiple items cave in the flimsy wire shelves with no more than about 50 lbs in a plastic tote/tub. This has happened nearly ever single time I put an item (weighing about 50 lbs) on any shelf. What a complete joke! Seriously - look at my pictures and DO NOT BUY THIS CRAP. ***I should not be able to bend a shelf with 1 hand*** The overall construction of the unit is impressive and stable. I am honestly incredibly baffled that a company thought a flexible grate for the shelf made up of MAYBE 1/8th inch thick steel, that is *highly, very incredibly* flexible, was a good idea to use and then rate it for over 1,000 lbs. Do yourself a huge favor and get the shelving unit that has the sturdy wire shelves - it is also made of steel wiring like this grate/shelf BUT they are not flexible because they use a lot more wires and/or it's treated steel. I've used them at work in the past and I know from experience they are sturdy and capable of holding heavy items and won't flex much if at all.
