I would highly recommend that you do install a water separator with any compressor that you use as all compressors tend to use the air around them unless you live a very dry area like the desert.

The bushing is screwed onto the tool housing. The plastic filter just drops into the housing and sits freely. The pressure of the fluid running down, "Gravity feed" keeps teh filter in place and simply stops any debirs fron entering teh gun.
You must clean the gun daily just as you would need to clean a paintbrush. The paint drys on the nozzle and will block the air holes. if you keep the canister closed you should be able to leave pain in the cup overnight but would need to remove the spray cap and brush off the air holes. Also you will need to make sure you have the filter screens in the cup as small particles of dried paint may flake off and plug the gun. Dried paint will block the airflow through the front of the gun and distort the spray pattern.
