Can you use a 1/2 inch impact wrench without breaking the tool by over torquing

Asked by Chris December 18, 2019

Hey Chris, I would never recommend using an impact wrench on an oil filter. The manner in which a impact works will not work with the filter wrench, the filter wrench needs constant pressure to grip the oil filter, something an impact does not provide. Thanks!

Asked by BenB June 24, 2019

Hey BB, I can't confirm whether it will work or not, this tool is designed for spin on filters and not cartridge filters but it would grip anything in the 2-1/2" to 3-3/4" range. Your filter more than likely has a hex on the top of the cap and flutes on the side allowing use of either a large socket or a flute type oil filter wrench. Thanks!

Encountered a problem getting my oil filter off. Apparently the same 800lb gorilla installed this one as a previous reviewer. Filter was in a recess that only 1 hand could fit. No swing room for a wrench or strap etc. hooked this up to a 6” extension and in under 2 mins had it off and new one installed. Highly recommend!!!

Was in a pickle!
So I like to do my own car care on my vehicles, well I came across a problem which was the oil filter. The trucks filter was so horribly bad with not being oiled up before installed that it was a pain to removed, tried the rope trick, belt, screw and the eventually screwdriver trick and still no luck. The filter was on tighter than a welded bolt. So i debated going to an auto parts store for one of those oil wrenches or get this husky tool. After reading the reviews i gave it a shot. And boy let me tell you. Soon as i got home and climbed under the truck not 2 mins later the oil filter came off. I recommend this tool for any oil filter removal. Plus its a husky tool so if it breaks you can take it back to home depot for a free replacment! Good luck and remeber to oil the new filters seal!

This thing really did the job when nothing else could! I had to deal with the worst stuck oil filter of my life today, and literally this thing was the only tool that could get the job done. I drive a 96 jeep cherokee, and the oil filter is not amazingly accessible, and this fit right in behind the filter nicely. I tried to take the oil filter off by hand with no luck. Next I tried one of those metal band style oil filter wrenches, and the filter was on so tight i bend the handle in half! See the picture to believe it! I even tried the puncture the oil filter with a screw driver trick with no luck. By this point I had been working on getting this filter off for over two hours, and within 5 minutes of getting home with this new tool, I had the old filter off and the new filter on. I still had to use a two foot long pipe to extend the handle length of my ratchet to get extra leverage, the oil was on so tight but this got it done!

Great brilliant product. Must have for easy oil filter removal on modern cars with limited access to the filter. No fuss at all. Go get one Only minor downside is it uses a 3/8" driver, I had to buy a convertor for my 1/2" drive socket set.

The Best Oil Filter Removal Tool
This is, by far, the best and easiest oil filter tool I've ever used. I suggest using it with an extension ratchet for better leverage.

I only found out about this tool because I needed it for an oil change on a Toyota with a very hard to reach filter. I own three other types of filter wrenches and none of them could get in the space, let alone turn it. So it came down to either buying a cap style wrench which would have been twenty dollars(and would only fit that one size filter), or getting this one for five dollars- and this one is adjustable to fit other sizes too so it was the obvious choice. Worked with almost no resistance on the first turn, and it's now my most important tool for oil changes. I like that it's only supposed to be used to take off an oil filter, no putting one on with it and getting it stuck like it's welded onto the car- it's fool proof. It's heavy duty feeling and if it ever did break I can just bring it back with no receipt and Home Depot will replace it so that's a great deal. I can't find one thing bad about this tool- it does everything it's supposed to and makes the job a lot easier. I see myself owning one of these for life as long as we don't all switch to electric cars with no oil.

Husky Universal 3-Jaw Oil Filter Wrench is a solid, well made tool. It did help prying open the filter off my Generac generator. However it only works one way, to open but no close. I did hand tighten the new filter, but I like to be able to give it a small push stronger than my hand grip. The Filter Wrench does not engage just the lower part of the filter which is the strongest. It wraps higher against the thinner walls of the filter. That is why I give it 4 stars, but it is well worth the price.
