Stay cool(er) in the heat It’s a brutally hot summer here in Kansas City, with weeks in the 90’s. I commute by motorcycle and decided to give this HyperKewl cooling vest a try. In summary it helps, but don’t expect miracles. It keeps your core cool, which is very important, but the rest of you still gets baked. It’s not like sitting in front of an air conditioner, but it’s still well worth the money. Fit: I’m 5’7”, 170 lbs, 36” waist. I chose size Large. It fits me comfortably, slightly loose. It fits well under my mesh motorcycle jacket, which is also a bit loose. If you wear at tight outer layer you’ll want the vest to fit closer. See pictures. Look and feel: Hi-Viz yellow really stands out! The inside is blue, and while it’s not technically “reversible”, it’s easy to turn inside out and zip it up from the inside. It feels like it’s well made, and it’s very light (when dry). It’s available in other colors. The colors did not run onto a white t-shirt. It felt slightly slimy when wet, but only while wringing it out, not while wearing it. Function: The manufacturer suggests it can be used for any outdoor activity, so I wore it while mowing my lawn – about 90 minutes with a push mower on an 85 degree, moderately humid day. I soaked it in a bucket of water for a few minutes – it REALLY holds water! Wrung it out, but it was still dripping. Wore it over a shirt and it helped a little, but it got my shirt and waistband wet. I take the blame for this since the instructions recommend running briefly under tap water. I confirmed this the next day – wet the vest for only 30 seconds in the sink and wrung it out gently, mostly to distribute the water. Stored it in the freezer for a couple of hours for extra cooling. Wore it over my t-shirt (under my jacket) for a 40 minute commute at highway speeds, 95 degrees. Airflow makes a big difference! The more the better! If you have a large windshield it will be less effective. At the end of the ride my t-shirt was dry, and I wasn’t sweating, and I was more comfortable than usual. So the vest is a definite improvement. I think it will help to experiment with the amount of water applied. As long as you don’t mind getting your t-shirt wet, it’s not a problem.
