The IHeat Electric Tankless Water Heater Model S-16 has the capacity of heating 3.5 GPM which is the equivalent to 2 showers (at 1.5 GPM each), and 1 sinks (at 0.50 GPM each) simultaneously, or any combination which equals to 3.5 GPM. The S-16 can handle these applications in the warmer climates of the US which are Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Texas, Arizona, California, Alabama, and Mississippi. Anything north of these States the Model S-16 can be used for point of use, or 1- application at a time. A good rule of thumb is if you live in the southern states mentioned here the S-16 can power a 3 to 4 bedroom 2-1/2 bathroom home, including dishwasher and clothes washer, please keep in mind that tankless water heaters are designed to heat incoming water at a maximum output temperature based on simultaneous use and inlet water temperatures. So if your demand for hot water decreases your output water temperatures will increase, as well as if you live in the colder states this S-16 will heat less volume of water, this will cause the S-16 to be used in Point of Use applications in the colder climates.

Questions & Answers

Can this heater be used for a washer

Nothing else will be connected
Asked by: Bird
Yes it can, but it a smaller unit might be a more suitable, cost efficient choice. A single fixture, point-of-use heater will also do the job, and with fewer amps, making the electrical connections simpler, and much less costly.

This is a model S-16 and requires 220 service. You want a model S-4.

Can this unit be installed outside? I would like to install it on my patio where i currently have my water heater now.

Asked by: Joser
To clarify, although the unit is waterproof, giving you a lot of versatility for installation locations, the manufacture does state the device is for "indoor use only". I expect you would be fine to protect the unit from direct exposure to weather, and of course freezing temperatures.

The owners manual states that you must use a minimum of 36" of copper pipe on the inlet and outlet of the heater. Why can't you use Pex?

Some other tankless water heater mfrs say that Pex can be used to connect directly to their models. What is different about this unit that you must use copper pipe?
Asked by: BG
I'm totally confused. I am looking up more info about this heater b/c I have it installed in my barn and it just froze up and is now ruined. My plumbers installed it with PEX. I saw a test of freeze/thaw done on copper vs. pvc vs. pex and the copper blew out as it thawed but the pex and pvc did not. In the video above, it shows PEX installed. So why would Home Depot, a seller of the iHeat tankless have a video showing PEX for the installation if the manufacturer voids warranty with its use.

16 kW Real-Time Modulating 3.5 GPM Electric Tankless Water Heater is rated 3.8 out of 5 by 36.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Please avoid PLEASE Been through 2 of these and it has been a nightmare. First one lasted 3 months and second one lasted 13 months. I installed for my mother and my life is now miserable. Second one will sometimes heat water to max of 107 but for only a short time. Customer service is a total joke I have a conventional water heater that is now 16 years old and works fine. Really feel stupid for putting my mother through all this.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic machine! Its hard to believe this little unit will replace a 40 Gallon water heater! But I must say I was happy to say good " buy" to the large antiquated tank! I have a 2300sq foot home in the mountains of southern California we are at about 4800 elevation. So we get a little snow and cooler temps. I had to wait 2 mins for the old water heater to reach the bedroom shower, now I only have to wait about a min and a half . but once it comes hot, it does not stop! Family over for the holidays 3 showers in a row it produces endless hot water and 2 showers at a time are good as well. 6 months of use should have done this years ago. I spent a little time to install the heavy gage wire to the main panel but installation was a snap. Ps if you have a bath tub that runs at 5-7 gallons a min .... use a 2.5 gallon per min water saver end.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Incredible Very easy to install. I'm in Florida and using this for my whole house. The only issue is when both showers are running the water pressure drops quite a bit. However it's still ok to use both showers at once. It's perfect if your power supply is limited. I would have had to upgrade my service to use a bigger unit. I am very happy with it. I do recommend installing a sediment filter on cold water supply. If anything gets in the unit it will stop working but it's easy to rectify the problem by just disconnecting the supply at the unit and removing debris from the screen. Had to contact customer service to figure that out and they were extremely helpful.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great addition to the garage sink It used to take forever to get hot water to the garage utility sink. I thought one of these on-demand units might be a good idea and spent a couple of hours installing it. Totally worth it, hot water instantly for washing hands, the dog, whatever you have. No tank to drain and it's not sitting there 99.9% of the time heating a tank of water that is only being used very occasionally.

The the flow switch stops the units and you have to purchase a replacement. This is our 3rd unit and it is getting very annoying to replace these every year. The manufacturer customer service staff has a terrible attitude and will literally laugh at you over the phone if you just ask for a receipt of your transaction.
