Good Unit But Correctly Select The Right Model
I purchased this model to replace a Bosch unit that -after three years of stellar service- literally melted and almost caught fire. Apparently, a hot leg inside the unit became disconnected. Compared to the Bosch unit that it replaced, the iHeat S-9 is solidly built. It has a sealed, brushed stainless body compared to a molded plastic one. It has no serviceable parts inside, and to open the unit would void its warranty. Further, the iHeat has an easily adjustable up/down button to adjust the water temperature. It also has a red digital display of the current water temperature.
On the iHeat S-9, the water inflow and outflow is through right and left sides respectively via 1/2 inch copper compression fittings. The electrical connection is made through a 2 foot pigtail. Each of these was significantly different to the Bosch unit where water enters and exits the bottom via threaded fittings, and the electrical connections were made inside the unit itself. The installation was consequently not a simple "buy and replace" project but took some time. In addition, the iHeat unit requires that on both inflow and outflow sides, the installer use at least 36 inches of copper pipe. This was somewhat challenging to accommodate in a small kitchen cabinet where I mounted the unit. Over all, however, a DIY job lasting a day with proper planning and material, assuming you have a dedicated 240 circuit to the location.
In my opinion, spend some time determining which unit to buy based on the rate of rise necessary given your typical water temperature. In my circumstance, I use the S-9 to heat water coming into my kitchen faucet and dishwasher. I live in the East Bay of San Francisco where our water temperature coming into the unit is typically about 55-60 degrees. While I set the unit for 125 degree output, I have yet to receive this temperature. Typically it produces 115 degree water; good but not exactly what I had hoped. I probably should have gone up a model as my wiring size would have supported that selection, but ...you learn.
Also, given my prior experience with the Bosch unit, I recommend a 50 amp 240 volt GFCI breaker that does not require a neutral. The iHeat S-9 draws 41 amps at 240 volts and does not utilize a neutral, only two hot legs and a ground. Having such protection might preclude damage to the unit if one leg becomes disconnected, and of course, is just plain sensible.

Decent quality, reasonably priced unit.
I purchased this as a replacement for my father's malfunctioning electric tankless water heater that was made by a now defunct company. As it turned out, this unit was a direct fit to the plumbing and required no modifications or changes to the plumbing. That part was easy.
The not so easy was how the unit is attached to the wall. Fortunately there was a paper templet for determining the screw holes. The unit has slots in the back that should slide over three screws to hold the unit to the wall. The templet showed the relative position of the inlet and outlet plumbing connections so I was able to get it right the first time and have it lined up perfectly to the existing plumbing.
The unit works well. Instructions on its operation and adjusting the temp are not the best but not the worst, Just read carefully. There is a little bit of understanding how this works required to get the temp right in the shower. As water flows the unit starts heating up. But the more the flow or faster the flow the longer it takes to get the water to the desired temp. Easiest thing I can tell you is to turn on the water full blast in the shower, and let it run till the temp gets up to a stable how you want it. Also realize that if someone else is using the sink or toilet at the same time you are taking a shower, there will be a pressure/flow change in the unit which means you will experience some temperature fluctuation in the shower. Can't be helped. Deal with it. Nobody brush their teeth, do dishes, or start the washer during shower time. If they do... they have to take a shower sometime which is you payback time.
This is a 240V 9kv unit requiring 8awg wire and a 40amp double pole breaker. Check your local building codes.
Caution. Do not remove the cover or you void the warrantee! As an instrument electrician, I don't like that. I like to see what makes things tick. I was able to find a Utube demo with the cover off that gave me an idea of what was there behind the cover. Realistically, it could be dangerous for the average non-electrical person to get in behind there. So I guess if anything goes wrong... call the company first and find out what to do... which I expect will be to take it off the wall and send it back to them???

My heater malfunctioned so I called the manufacturer. They do not return calls or emails. When I finally got someone on the phone, he identified himself as the owner and was extremely rude. He refused to believe that it broke and told me I'd have to buy another one from him, pay for shipping, ship my old one back and then they'd look over it and possibly give me a refund. Do not buy from them. Buy from a manufacturer that's larger that will stand behind their product.

16 kW Real-Time Modulating 3.5 GPM Electric Tankless Water Heater
The IHeat Electric Tankless Water HeaterThe IHeat Electric Tankless Water Heater Model S-16 has the capacity of heating 3.5 GPM which is the equivalent to 2 showers (at 1.5 GPM each), and 1 sinks (at 0.50 GPM each) simultaneously, or any combination which equals to 3.5 GPM. The S-16 can handle these applications in the warmer climates of the US which are Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Texas, Arizona, California, Alabama, and Mississippi. Anything north of these States the Model S-16 can be used for point of use, or 1- application at a time. A good rule of thumb is if you live in the southern states mentioned here the S-16 can power a 3 to 4 bedroom 2-1/2 bathroom home, including dishwasher and clothes washer, please keep in mind that tankless water heaters are designed to heat incoming water at a maximum output temperature based on simultaneous use and inlet water temperatures. So if your demand for hot water decreases your output water temperatures will increase, as well as if you live in the colder states this S-16 will heat less volume of water, this will cause the S-16 to be used in Point of Use applications in the colder climates.View Full Product Description
