AnswerRwh I am not sure who Leslie is..........but clamp meters are a safe way to measure high amounts of current safely. By clamping around a conductor the meter measures the magnetic field around the conductor and safely converts that to Amperage. The meter can also measure voltage, resistance, and capacitance and more. If you want to learn how to use one you might enroll in your local IBEW or trade school. This clamp meter is nice. It comes with meter leads, a ground clamp and a nice soft case to store it. The ideal clamp meter feels very rugged. The displays are easy to read. The tight site display on the bottom of the meter makes the meter easy to read in many different positions including over your head. The function switch feels substantial and solidly locks on each function. The ideal 61-763 came with a battery, so it is ready to go right out of the package.

Ideal 660 Amp AC Tight-Sight Clamp Meter with TRMS is a quality tool built for the industry. This meter has many of the desired features that are looked for in a meter. There are five different control settings that allow you to check a variety of electrical variables. This meter is equipped with a back light for working in poor lighting condition. It is also equipped with LED reading on the face of the meter as well as on the end when working in tight places. The one thing that I would liked to have seen was NCV (Non Control Voltage)

Nice sized unit is easy to hold in one hand and operate with your thumb. Includes a nice set of leads and an alligator clip adapter for your ground lead (which makes things a bit easier for those times when you don't have three hands).
Two nice features are the lighted display and the hold reading button. Just hit a button to light up the display for a few minutes to save battery life. The meter also turns itself off after 30 minutes to save the battery.
The hold reading lets you hit a button to freeze the display. It will hold that reading until you hit the hold button a second time.
The Tight Sight display is a second display on the end of the unit. When you have it clamped around a line above your head, this second readout makes it a whole lot easier to read than trying to jam your head into a joint bay to see. And the bottom display is lighted, too.
Note: This model only reads AC amps with the clamp. You'll need the next model up to read DC A.
