Should it be connected in a line under the control of a GFCI for safety or that is not necessary ?

Yes, no, yes, no! Good God people. Yes, check Unified Building Code (US) and you can put a above counter switch actuated GFCI under sink or a GFCI plug above counter with the disposer connected as "load". You can hace one outlet of a standard duplex outlet under sink as a switched outlet and the other wired non switched (for a hot water dispenser say) if you remove the shunt tab between the outlets.

how to maintain badger 5

Asked by bruno22418 January 24, 2013

Yes, first make sure there is no yucky food stuck in there. My mother tried to put in chicken skin and it never ground up and just stuck to the side. So you can imagine.. But.. according to the documentation, you should grind some hard materials such as small bones, fruit pits, and ice. A scouring action is created by the particles inside the grind chamber. Grind peelings from citrus fruits to freshen up drain smells. Use a disposer cleaner, degreaser, or deodorizer as necessary to relieve objectionable odors caused by grease build-up. (BTW, never pour grease or fat in the disposer, or any of your drains.)

What comes in the box?

For Badger 5 you will need the cord. Was surprised to find this missing from the new disposal, however was able to remove from previous model and rewire with a bit of effort.

My Badger 5 is leaking water. Other than replacement are there options? I suppose either way I need to uninstall it, so a new one might be easier?

I have been in my house for 14 years so I have no idea how old it really is. My Badger 5 starting leaking so I sprayed just the hole with a Sealant. It stopped. Now later it's not working but the power is there. I tried to turn the center with the hex and accidentally I punched out the red button so I guess it's time to buy a new one. Also I called the 800# for help.

I just had the same problem develop with the Badger 1. My local Home Depot does not stock that model anymore, so I replaced it with a Badger 100 and had no problems doing so. I even use the sink mount and the power cord from the old unit, saving myself time and effort to install the new mount and the expense of a new cord.

Run it once a week no matter what using warm water. For odor removal use some white vinegar.

Good so far
Customer review from insinkerator.com logo
So far so good. I thought that since this unit was the lower unit that it would be weak and break easily, but it is holding up. It’s a good device.

Not a Quality Product
Customer review from insinkerator.com logo
So our builder installed the badger 1-87 in our new house. 4 years later & it’s dead. Not a good quality product, I guess that’s why they only have a 1 year warranty on it.

Hi Millbank, thanks for sharing your comments. Having been in business for over 80 years, we take great pride in making quality products you can trust, and we’re always working on improving. The life of an InSinkErator® Disposer is entirely dependent upon service conditions and usage patterns, just as is expected with other small home appliances. I hope you’ll consider InSinkErator again in the future. Should you still need assistance, you can rest assured we'll be here to help.
My InSinkErator Badger 500 1/2 hp garbage disposal only lasted for 10 month.

I bought this Badger 500 1/2 hp online on September 29 2013 from Homedepot (HD), received it on Oct. 2 2013 and since then had stored it at home as an emergence replacement. When my last one suddenly failed on October 30 2019, I put on this one on October 31 2019. Today, it's Aug 23 2020, I suddenly saw a full bowl of water (in the photo [fig1], I already dumped the water from the bowl but you still can tell water leak from two screws [fig2,fig3]) under the sink and overflowed onto the plastic cloth under the bowl. Fortunately, I always put an open plastic container under the disposal for I am always prepared for the worse situation. So this one only lasted for 10 months. Because I bought it from HD in Oct 2013 but didn't install it until October 31 2019, so I even don't know how to go about claiming that three year warranty. Maybe this one is a lemon one? I put my review here to let people know the quality of Badger 500 1/2 hp. Very disappointed with InSinkErator Badger 500. I still have my original electronic order receipt. The email hidden from the public is my HD account name so you can find all my contact.

We had the Badger 5 at the home we bought 18 years ago so I don't know its exact age but we bought it again with cord attached.Seems to be good after 2 months use , hard to input on line for warranty registration. Product came faster for delivery than quoted, wish H.D. would stock this at least one out of 5 stores.

It worked great for 14 months, but noticed a leak and then a hole in the larger, upper section. I'm guessing something punctured it but I only remember one time where a small metal item may have been inside and turned on for seconds upon hearing it. Also 3/4 HP is a little on the loud side.
