Questions & Answers

Should it be connected in a line under the control of a GFCI for safety or that is not necessary ?

Asked by: saib
Those shiny metal parts (sink flange, back-up flange, upper and lower mounting ring) at top of disposal are electrically isolated from all the electrical parts by the high impact plastic cover of grinding chamber. Electrical (and mechanical-electrical) problems that will occur due to rusting of non Stainless Steel parts will cause it to trip internal (thermo) circuit breaker (red reset button on disposer bottom) or circuit breaker in panel. Even if green wire of power cord were to fail allowing steel housing of motor to be electrified, your other hand is not going to be grounded. You might get a nip, but you won't be electrocuted. Unless you buy one with a Stainless Steel grinding chamber, the grinding chamber will rust.

how to maintain badger 5

any steps to keep it from smelling bad
Asked by: bruno22418
Yes, first make sure there is no yucky food stuck in there. My mother tried to put in chicken skin and it never ground up and just stuck to the side. So you can imagine.. But.. according to the documentation, you should grind some hard materials such as small bones, fruit pits, and ice. A scouring action is created by the particles inside the grind chamber. Grind peelings from citrus fruits to freshen up drain smells. Use a disposer cleaner, degreaser, or deodorizer as necessary to relieve objectionable odors caused by grease build-up. (BTW, never pour grease or fat in the disposer, or any of your drains.)

Badger 5 1/2 HP Continuous Feed Garbage Disposal is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 6190.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Ease of Installation The product was easy to replace and works well. I'd suggest that rather than having to deal with a leak when its time for replacement, the units should have a way of alerting the owner that a problem will ensue. Think of a smoke detector that has a low battery...it will beep until you change it, but won't "leak" all over the place...I'm just saying...

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This InSinkErator Badger 5 lasts longer than expected! Our previous Badger 5 lasted 13 years before it started leaking! (I understand the average life span is 5 years) In this day and age of constantly changing technology it was a great relief to find the exact same model of sink disposal unit that was previously installed! The price has remained relatively the same as well. Installation is hard only because the unit is heavy, so one is trying to hold the unit up with one hand and turn the retaining ring with the other. If it's possible (to get another set of hands under the kitchen sink) to have a friend assist in the process it would be easier. This unit does what it's advertised to do and we look forward to many years of faithful service!

Although we installed it 8 years ago, we did not use it much as we compost our food waste. To my surprise, the disposal completely rusted and started leaking a few weeks ago. I would have expected the motor to fail but this thing rusted as it were not galvanized. I did not replace it and instead chose to connect the sink drain directly to the trap. If you decide to go this route, you will need a flexible trap or a flexible adapter to make up for the difference in width (1 1/2 pipe to whatever the disposal is). Spent about $25 including pipe cement/primer. Bye bye disposal forever.

Product installed in about 90 minutes because I was replacing a similar badger product that was 17 years old. Most of the time was spent getting the old unit out and all of the mounting hardware was the same so I did not need that. It did come with mounting hardware if you do need it. There was only one part this unit did not have. The old unit was rusted and there is a piece that holds the power cord where it enters the unit. My old one rusted and the new one did not come with that part. I had to improvise but it's a simple electrical flush mount. The unit runs quietly and effectively.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Insinkerator Replaced the original Badger 5 which worked perfectly for 11 years because we replaced all of our kitchen counter tops with granite. Also added the air actuated button on the top of the counter by the sink instead of having an on/off switch in the cabinet under the sink. Didn't have to replace the old unit but everything else was new so we went with a new unit.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from We sure like our Badger! We had to replace our last garbage disposal after only 3 years. What a shame because we don't use it much with only 2 of us in the house. It was from a competitor, but believe me we won't make that mistake ever again. We were recommended a Badger from a friend and glad he did! We're pleased and will sing the praises of Badger to everyone we can!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from It's good! This is a good sink erator, the only thing i dont like about it is that when i turn it on, it splashes back a lot of water and waste in the other bowl of the sink, making all my clean dishes dirty. I am happy with how its cuts through all the waste but that particular throwing back up the water, is something that annoys me every single time.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great disposer. but ----- The disposer itself is great, and the 1/2 HP motor is more than enough for our purposes and seems to be relatively quiet in operation. The installation was straightforward, except for the installation of the retainer ring under the sink flange. That was a bear to get installed in the cramped work quarters.
