Questions & Answers

After 1 year, my InSinkErator Badger 500 is not working. It is not clogged and just "humms" so I know it has electric.

Any suggestions?
Asked by: Brent
Just use the allen wrench to free up the impeller.. just a reminder, also. don't forget if you turn the unit on, and it stops" humming", there is a little RED reset button, on the bottom, just push it

My 5 is leaking out the bottom. Took apart-the "sealed" metal part under the blades is rotted through. Is it replaceable

Asked by: Jes
It depends on several factors such as how long you've had the unit, and if it's still under warranty, along with what parts are actually leaking and available for repair.....the manufacturer's customer service should be able to help you with that! There are parts catalogs along with service repair catalogs made available for repair people for all the newer models and all appliances for that matter! And I've noticed over the years, manufacturers are making it harder for the average consumer to find these catalogs on the internet. Greedy manufacturers have always catered to plumbers and service repair people rather than your average do-it-yourselfer who is capable of repairing the unit with some replacement parts, if shown how.....and that's very unfair for the do-it-yourselfer who can't afford a plumber every several years because these disposals now rust through and leak and crack are not even made to last more than 2 years! I guess the objective is for consumers to have to buy these units every 2 years and hire a plumber to install them! What a shame and a rip-off to the comsumer purchasing these products!!! COMPLAIN CONSUMERS, COMPLAIN!

If i am replacing a badger 5 with this 500, can i reuse the existing mounting ring and drain assembly?

Example: I have looked at the manual and can't figure out what I did wrong.
Asked by: Doug
Yes you can; practice with the new one on the unit so you know how it works.

Hi i have a badger 5 in my sink and i want to replace it. Can i replace any badger model?

Asked by: Kix
I replaced a Badger 5 with the Badger 500 and it fit to the sink perfectly. The unit was a little bit wider at the top so I had to cut the drain pipe from the disposal to the main drain by about 3/4".

It is quieter than my original 1/2 HP disposal, yet works just as well if not better. Since we compost the majority of our food scraps, we don't use the disposal as often as others may. But we use it enough to know that we made the right choice in purchasing this disposal as an upgrade for our newly remodeled kitchen — and for putting our house on the market. Great price, great product!

I scrape uneaten food and oil off of plates, pans and pots into the trash for disposal to the landfill. Running disposal is fairly quiet. Badger 500 replaced the Badger 5 which lasted over ten years. Easy self installation. Met my expectation.

I was a little hesistant at first because the old Badger was somewhat noisy. But to my surprise after the easy installation I found this Badger 500 to be fairly quiet. It does not come with a power cord nor cord strain relief. I was able to remove the power cord from the old disposal and re-purpose it on the new disposal. The new disposal works well.

This replaced an older Insinkerator disposal, and took only about 10 minutes to install -- including clearing out all the stuff under the sink. It perfectly matched the existing fitting & exit port, and the wiring was trivially easy. I wish every plumbing project went like this.

Really NOT hard to install (Daughter and I put in new sink and faucet and this new disposal in about 3-4 hours- includes time taking out old sink/ faucet/ disposal) Works well but reason for the THREE stars is that the upper 1/2 of the disposal is made of plastic. The disposal it was replacing developed a large crack in the plastic part and actually looked to be this exact same product. What happened to an affordable ALL METAL HOUSING disposal??? Have no doubt it will last for 5+ years or more but also no doubt it will probably develop a crack just like our old one. Still recommend it though as an economical but probably temporary disposal.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Works well as a disposer Good replacement for our old InSinkErator that broke after 10+ years. The disposer installation was easy since I used the previous sink bracket (which wasn't leaking). The plumbing was a little trickier and required additional purchase of piping and fittings since we have a 2-basin sink and had some brass piping that corroded and started leaking. Since we are now composting most of our vegetable wastes, our disposer gets less use, so the relatively smaller disposer has been and should work fine for us. One disadvantage is the rubber baffle which is too soft so that most things that hit the drain falls through the baffle too easily. Personal examples: bars of soap, small plastic measuring cup (RIP).

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Louder than the last 2 badger 100's this isn't a negative review as the device seems to be working well. The noise I hear compared to the lower end model has had me scratching my head thinking something is wrong. Yes, we frequently get something stuck in there, usually a kids fork or plastic doo dad from time to time, but nothing that would do permanent damage. Mind is 5 weeks old and I've spent quite a lot of time with my arm down in there digging for what could be causing all the noise. Nothing found. Maybe it will get better. Maybe it's volume fluctuates in the fall (perhaps excited for college football). Who knows.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from It was very easy to install... Of course I was... It was very easy to install... Of course I was simply replacing the exact same unit. The previous unit was approximately 15 years old and had cracked above the discharge tube. The crack was leaking and that's why it needed to be replaced. Note that the replacement / new model had a design change in the area that cracked. It now has a fitting with an 1/8 inch thick flat rubber ring gasket in place of the original integrated discharge tube. It would appear that the new design will allow some vibration isolation whereas the previous one did not. It should be an improvement.
