Questions & Answers

can the SKU#461277, insinkerator sink top disposal switch be used with any brand of disposals? It is just a switch afterall. Iust want to know before

Asked by: Capt. Bill
It is an air switch you plug into a existing outlet, then you need to install a plug on the garbage disposal and plug it in to the switch. There is an air hose which you install between the off/on plunger and the switch then you just push on and push off. Plus there is three buttons to choose from, white, black and stainless steel.

Does it have to be held down the entire time you want the disposal running?

Does it have to be held down the entire time you want the disposal running? Or can you press it, run the disposal, and then press it again to turn it off?
Asked by: Ndbtdr
Press the button, the disposal runs, press it again, it shuts off.

Is there an extension to make the switch longer

Asked by: Steve
There is about 6 to 8 feet of air hose which gives you a good variation of installation.

Customer Reviews

Single Outlet SinkTop Switch Kit for InSinkErator Garbage Disposals is rated 3.9 out of 5 by 101.
Rated 2 out of 5 by from Can I just buy a new push button? Worked really well for about 5 months until the push button got stuck down. I tried blowing into the tube to free it but no luck. Is there a way to jut replace this part or do I need to but a whole new unit? I saw some reviews that said this happens "when it gets wet." - it's right next to the sink! Geez...

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Second defective switch in less than 1 year I had this switch installed last November, had the first one replaced in June and now the second one is not working. The button internals fell apart on the first switch and now the outlet piece is frozen in the on position and will not turn off.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Poorly constructed push button. Plastic button failed after several months of use. New push button should be available without having to buy complete unit. Product is over priced to begin with.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great innovation! When I was buying the disposal unit, I looked at this item and decided not to purchase it. However, when I got home and told my wife, I was immediately on my way back to the store to buy it. Installation was fairly straight forward, but cutting a 3/4" hole in a stainless steel sink is a bit tricky. The function of this switch is flawless. It is actually a little air pump which attaches via a small hose to a module which plugs into an outlet mounted well away from any water, which in my case meant installing an outlet under the counter. Now we don't have to worry when cleaning off the sink, about splashing water or other liquid into some electrical part.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Nice look, cheap design After owning the In Sinkerator air switch for a few months it began to jam under the outer ring and then eventually stopped working. You can turn it on but you can't turn it off! I will not be buying any more In Sinkerator products after this one. You should definitely get a lot more for the price!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Just What I Needed The first time I saw this switch, I thought it was pretty neat but since I have a switch for my disposal just a few inches to the left of the sink I didn't have a need for it until recently. I received a AC powered touch-less faucet which has to be plugged in. I changed the single outlet (for the disposal) under the kitchen sink to a duplex outlet. I intended to make the duplex outlet a half hot outlet where the top plug is controlled by the switched and the bottom plug is always hot but found that the builder wired it in a way that did not allow for a half hot switch. I was a bit bummed until I remembered this switch. I agree with others that the price is a little steep but when it's just what you need, what can you do but get it and move on. The device is pretty simply... 1 - I connected the hose to the sink top switch 2 - Installed the switch in a predrilled hole 3 - Connected the hose to the outlet 4 - Then plugged in the outlet I cut the hose since it's less than a foot from the sink top to the outlet for me. So far this switch has worked perfectly but most importantly I now have the extra "always hot" outlet for my faucet. The only issue I have is trying to remember not to use the old switch that previously controlled the disposal. If I turn it off it cuts the power for the disposal and the faucet. At any rate, this was a quick and easy solution that I'm sure cost far less than hiring an electrician to install an additional electrical outlet under the kitchen sink.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Great idea, not so great quality I installed the kit two years ago and it was pretty straight forward. The most difficult part was screwing the nut onto the bottom of the button assembly under the sink. The kit comes with a white, a nickel and a chrome button so that you can match the finish to your faucet. I used the chrome button. Within two months, the chrome ring had separated from the plastic button assembly and fallen off. The ring is glued on, not mechanically attached. I used epoxy to reattach it and it hasn't fallen off again yet. Recently, the switch unit stopped working reliably. It now turns the garbage disposal on but not always off, requiring a trip under the sink to unplug it. Disappointing.
