Asked by Doug December 17, 2020You can make them as deep as you want. But keep in mind that the deeper they are the narrower the bookcase will have to be so that the back edge of the off-hinge side of the bookcase will clear the wall when swinging open. This may create an issue with covering the gap between the bookcase and the wall if the gap is wider than normal. This is probably what you're looking for: my walls are 4.75" thick, the door opening is 37.5" and width of the bookcase is 35". I used standard 1" x 8" boards to build the bookcase and they do stick into the "hidden" room. Do your self a favor and make sure EVERYTHING is perfectly straight and level.

Asked by Lori May 3, 2020The hinges are attached to the floor and the top of the door jamb. Unless you do a build out around the top of the door to accommodate, the clearance at the ceiling may not be enough if the door isn't PERFECTLY square and level. It can be done though.

Asked by DIYAG January 29, 2018Our opening was 42 and our case was 38 1/4.. We built a mockup first and then the case. Our opening was not exactly square and in a house built in the 50's. The instructions that come with the hinges are very helpful.
